1) Yup, watched another youtuber (or two) and thought, nope, that won't work for me. 2) Learned a long time ago with fishing equipment - last year's model or cheaper alternatives work great especially if you are aware of the limitations and are willing to accept or work around them. Sometimes it's nice to buy cheap and beat the crap out of it and buy new the next year instead of paying 5X as much and worry about keeping it pristine. 3) Wild animals? Typically they try to avoid you. (especially in the NorthEast) 4) Embrace the suck - It's still better than being home with the wife. ;-) 5) Less gear for longer hikes = better walking. More luxury items for short hike = enjoyable camping experience.(Extra clothes - is better than being miserable in soaking wet clothes. I try to have an emergency change of clothes, "just in case") Another good video, thank you.

I want to get into it but I'm stuck with this chicken and egg problem where I want good gear so I don't hate it but also don't want to spend in case I hate it.
@jefftp4 жыл бұрын
Start out with day hikes. Basic gear in a 15 to 25 liter pack: a real compass and map, first aid kit, headlamp/flashlight, 2 liters of water. Maybe in the spring/fall you want a hot lunch on the trail? That's when you invest in a cook kit, learn how to use it, and take it out on the trail. Maybe you're putting in enough miles that you need to add some water filtering/purification options? Great, add that to the pack. Save your first overnight trip for perfect weather, maybe a friend can lend you some old gear they don't use anymore? At home, learn how to use all your gear before going out. Be honest with yourself about how far you can walk--if you've never hiked before, even 8 miles can be exhausting depending on your fitness level. You might find you prefer the hiking without the camping--day hiking can be loads of fun and is definitely cheaper because the sleep system and shelter are where most of your money will end up. Maybe you prefer the camping without so much hiking? Hey, now you don't have to get to crazy about ultra-light gear which can really save money. It's critical to figure out what kind of hiking you do through personal experience because it will heavily influence your gear buying. One of the biggest mistakes you can make it buying a bunch of gear before you know how it's going to all work together, so take it easy, learn what works for you, and ease yourself into the hobby.

I do a decent amount of hiking but last summer I did my first real backpacking trip. I took a bus into the mouth of a canyon, then hiked up into the canyon and up a back trail up the side of a mountain to get to a camping site. I had a giant lantern for light, a giant backpack from the army surplus store and like 10 liters of water because the park service turned off all the running water due to pathogens in the pipes so I had to pack it all in. My backpack was heavy as all hell. It was hot. I was at a 45 degree hike almost the whole time with no poles. It suuuuuucked but it was also AMAZING. I was sweaty and gross and pretty much inhaled a ramen bomb as soon as I got to camp but it felt great knowing that I did a hard thing. I think a lot of the shattered hopes of new hikers and backpackers is when they think the whole thing is fun photos and don't realize that part of the fun of those photos is knowing what it took to get there.
@Ahex754 жыл бұрын
It has been funny to watch how hiking trends have changed. Gore-tex boots vs. Trail runners, hammock vs. Tent, sleeping bag vs quilt etc. It also depends which season you hike, do you need carry your kids stuff, how far are another hikers or civilization. And most important is "style" you like to hike, ul, bush craft, cold soaking, maybe meths or esbit, make food from fish or game you get. About half a decade ago we had a little bit of an argument about UL gear. In a forum like Reddit most users were single and didn't need much gear and the UL gear was only way to go. My sister and his family of five had different needs. Kids were under 10 and didn't carry whole of their weight, like part of a tent and food. Also group with 5 members freeze fried food wasn't option because high cost and not very tasty. Also some treats were needed like pancakes with berries they picked, so frying pan was needed. So my sisters husband carried 110 l bag and 30 to 35kg load for a week trip.

My gear methods over the majority of my backpacking years earned me a trail name: "Too Much"...... Too much damn gear, that often weighed too damn much! It's amazing that I didn't quit backpacking years ago because the hiking with a pack part used to really suck! There definitely is a sweet spot along the prepared/underprepared & light pack/heavy pack spectrum. That's part of the "fun" of figuring out backpacking systems.

My second backpacking trip (after my first one I'm sure had me hooked) was an easy hike in with an awesome Campsite next to a stream and no one around. The next day the rain rolled in around lunch while taking a break and finding out a ton of a rain was coming in that night and all the next day, like inches of it. We decided to call it and make are way back to the car. Well the rain came in a few minutes later and the rest of the hike out. In a terrain of bogs, rhododendrons close enough to the trail to make sure you were wet, and 2 miles downhill at the end. Along with a 7+hr drive home... And I wouldn't take it back for anything. Yeah it sucked! But enduring that little trip made me realize I can endure more and I love pretty much any minute I can get out there.

People who don't like backpacking, should try camping. Backpacking/hiking is all about getting as many miles as possible, going the distance, it's in my opinion incredibly stressful and you're basically speed walking past all the beautiful spots. If you enjoy that, that's fine, but I think most people who dislike backpacking after building it up in their head for so long, then trying it out and realizing it isn't for them, just want the camping/nature experience, and you can get that without backpacking or hiking. I have 2 dedicated plots of land that I camp on, free of charge whenever I need a break from people. It's govt owned land that's not maintained and rarely ever visited by anyone other than me. I take care of it, clean up any and all trash I find (trash always finds it way there, especially at one where there's a fishing spot less than a mile away) and enjoy my time outside, close enough I can camp for 1 night if I want, or camp for 4 days. Enjoy your time, no need to freak out about miles if you don't want to.

The Fat Guy and His Backpack Guy agrees 100%. Before spending a lot of money try day hikes and buy reasonably priced gear. I bought my first hiking boots at Big 5. I now have higher priced set, but my big 5 boots worked great for starting out. Good advise Kyle

The first bunch of times I went hiking I brought way, way too much food. I thought I would be mega hungry from the big miles that I would need a bear canister's worth of food.
@adventureswithfrickandfrack4 жыл бұрын
I did that too. Then I wasn’t even hungry.
@NickEDowning4 жыл бұрын
@@adventureswithfrickandfrack I've learned later that you actually lose your appetite when you hike for the first week or so. After that is when it kicks into hyperdrive. Funny how easy it to bring too much and have to carry it all.

Once I took a pair of old sneakers with me just because why not, it didn't even make sense why I did it, then something very strange happened, I found a friend of mine and his sneakers were all destroyed, they were in such bad shape that even The sole came off, so I gave him that extra pair and save his day, I wouldn't bring that back again but sometimes unexpected things happen

Huh I guess Ive been doing it all wrong or Kyle Style because I hardly ever remember details of the great parts about my adventures lol. I Do however always remember the WTF parts of my trips. Like getting lost in the Winds trying to off trail day hike from base camp to a secret shangri-la meadows for amazing fly fishing. We found the place after hours of bushwacking but we were so busy and preoccupied with fishing all day that when we were set to head out a short cut way back to base camp (we thought) we accidently hiked up the wrong side of a tributary and by the time we realized the folly the gorge was to deep to cross and were going to have to go back down and this was at dusk with probably 2 hours left to hike. So we ended up having to spend the night back down in shangri-la meadows where we were fishing with no camping gear as all we brought with us were fishing day packs. It was a cold night huddled around a fire on the river bank in fresh sign bear country Jeez. Long story to basically say I cant remember any specific fish I reeled in that day but man every detail of that night and the following day hike back to base camp is burned into memory.

#1 ✔ #2 ✔ #3 ✔ Rodent threat to your food is actually the biggest legit animal concern. #4 ✔ #5 It actually is better to have too much than not enough bc it's 95% self-correcting. Hikers don't die from carrying extra food and warm clothing.
@treebeardtheent22003 жыл бұрын
Big myth that I see is the myth that going out prepared only for ideal conditions and going as fast as possible is some kind of new improved way to hike - not at all. That kind of "hiking" is actually a dumbed down version of trail running, which btw is ok so long as people are just honest. The psychological thrill being sought by marathoner hikers is the same thing that ultra long distance runners go for. Hiking is hiking, and that means that it isn't about miles at all bc the trail is nothing more than a 18 inch wide strip of earth that gets a hiker out into the wilderness, forest, desert or wherever.

the most dangerous situations I have been in, either involved weather or my girl friend. Some girl friends should be classified as wild animals..... surprisingly it was a string of warm sunny spring days that almost did me in. A small creek became very high, fast and dangerous.
