I find it hard to believe that someone would pay $14k for a watch and not get it authenticated first. A guy was selling me a $4000 used breitling $9000 new for $1300 It seemed to good to be true so I asked him to meet me at a jewelry store so some one could verify it's real and he refused to and pretended to get offended so I just told him to kick rocks. So yes be smart about things!

Such a bummer to see these watches go to people who buy them ONLY for the purpose of showing that they can afford them, instead of for the love of beautiful craftsmanship in watchmaking. What kind of advice is: “if you can afford a GMT, skip the Sub”? In this case, skip the watch altogether. just tie 20k cash to your wrist with some string and leave the watch for someone who is looking for either a sub, or a GMT, because they want to own a sub, or a GMT.

I saw a documentary about the Chinese “clone” watches industry a while back, the high end clones, which costs around $1500-$2000 usd, according to experts from that documentary, those clones are so damn near perfect compared to their authentic counterparts, you can only tell it’s a clone if you opened up the casing, and some of the clones even use authentic parts… it’s crazy how they do that… IMO, when it comes to luxury timepieces, I rather spend a little more at a reputable dealer than risk getting a fake.

Margin most likely. Its also probly a 20k + watch if hes flying out or a very good customer if its a lower value watch. Customer service is key. A plane ticket is also probly 100$ for normal of 300$ for business type.

Likely won't cut into the margin too much, it is a business expense that can be written off, same with the hotel and food expenses as well. He's flying out for the purpose of selling a product/service in the course of business operations. If you've got five or six figures to spend on a watch for your collection, a 1-5% markup of a few grand is a very cheap price for expertise, trust and especially convenience. Never underestimate a wealthly persons spending limits for convenience. It's like buying a private jet, but worrying about the cost of the champaign flutes and China onboard. It's just not relevant to the larger discussion.

Depends. There are some that are amazing. I bought a replica breitling back in the day (young and poor) and it’s one of my favorite watches period. I have several watches that are in the $2000+ range and I like the fake more. It’s been running perfectly for the last decade and looks stunning.
