Truism: [CW] contesting is not for new [to Morse Code] hams. I set a goal to learn CW at my age. "They" advised to "Just dive into a CW contest. It'll increase your speed. And they will slow down to your speed." No, they won't slow down--- because it's not 'they' sending the CQ Contest stream. It's their high speed, computerized auto-keyer. And to change speed they have to go into the menus (and miss 4 contacts while at it). Joined a CQ WW and logged 4 QSOs in an hour. Took about 20 minutes of listening before I could accurately log the other Ham's call sign. Did not resemble fun. Question: With 89 different entry categories, WHY no category and set of plaques for the most QSOs and mults AT NO FASTER THAN 11 WORDS PER MINUTE (or some other speed from a choice of operating speeds)?

There are CW contests for slower speeds, check out the weekly K1USN Slow Speed Contest and the Medium Speed contest. Excellent practice and lots of fun. And people _will_ slow down. 73 de Sean N3RTW
