i've been binging all your videos because i cant decide between imperial and durham. i have a few questions if that's okay. is it scary being such a busy city? is the travelling to and from campus really inconvenient? also everyone talks about how the main library is really packed, but are there other smaller libraries e.g. linked with the accommodation? thankssss & ur videos have been really useful
@DoctorDevify
@DoctorDevify 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Frankie, thanks for your comment and I'm glad my videos have been useful! So it can be scary being in a big city but there are plenty of people that I know what are from small towns and in no time, you get used to it. its definitely a different environment but not something you shoudl necessarily avoid because you're not used to it. If you stick to student friendly places like south ken, hammersmith, fullham, north acton and you'll be just fine! Travelling to and from campus is not too much of a hassle - its usually relatively quick. The places most students live only take max 30 mins to get into campus but are often shorter. Even though the library is often packed, I think usually if its just one person you can sneak in a spot. There aren't specific libraries linked to accommodation halls per ce however. I think woodward has study rooms but I'm not too sure. What course are you looking to apply to btw?

A very nice gym juts few steps away that is only 30£ pm for Imperial students that does a lot of different classes. A Sainsbury's, Tesco, Dominos, Subway, Costa and an underground just outside the building and an Asda in walking distance or you can take the bus. For the price it was an amazing accommodation!

I would love to apply to Imperial, and my predicted score is at a 44/45 (for the IB). However, I'm quite worried about the BMAT, which I know is a very difficult exam that Imperial puts quite a lot of emphasis on. What score should I ideally be aiming for? I also think I don't have enough extracurriculars with regards to charity work, as I've spent most of my time trying to get experience in medical attachments or research attachments. Will this affect my chances of getting in? Thank you for the video, it was really informative :D
@DoctorDevify
@DoctorDevify 4 жыл бұрын
hey! so the BMAT requirement is cut off based. The minimum for 2019 was " a minimum of 3.5 in Section 1 and Section 2, with the sum of scores in these two Sections being at least 8.6. They were required to score a minimum of 2.5C in Section 3". After you have met this cut off they put you into 3 bands. Being in Band 1 gives you a higher chance of getting an interview than bad 2 which is higher than band 3. Although even if you are in band 3, the chances of an interview is still fairly solid. I think a good target to aim for, for an interview is over 5 in both sections but this is my subjective view and you can definitely get that interview with mid to high 4s. Just keep in mind this was the 2019 cut off and your year may be higher or lower but roughly it'll be similar. With charity work, that's perfectly fine but what medical schools tend to want is any kind of work in a "healthcare environment", but you need to check individual medical schools as they may be different. Although, As long as you show what you learnt at your attachments and the research project and talk about skills you gained and how they're relevant to medicine, i think it'll be great. Its not necessarily what you do but what you gain. Imperial is also quite research focused so they value it quite a lot and they may even ask about it at interview, so i'd say your application is looking good. good luck and thanks for watching the video!

I just received my predicted grades today and got A*AA (Maths, biology and chemistry), is my chance of getting in good or not? My teacher says I’ve got a really good personal statement. I’m just worried since the requirements are AAA but apparently they usually accept A*AA but the A* has to be in a science however I got the A* in maths? I did do furthermaths but dropped it before the predicted grades so can I use that as an ‘enrichment programme’ and is that impressive and have also completed an EPQ in my first year. I personally believe I deserved higher predicted grades, but we didn’t have ucas mocks due to corona and my grades were based on teacher opinion but I’m new to my school (joined for sixth form since I got high GCSE grades and it’s a ‘prestigious’ school) but I only spent like 5 months worth of school with my teachers before the whole corona lockdown occurance. As an imperial student or any others who’d like to input or anyone from prestigious medical schools, like oxford, Dundee,etc. Are my predicted grades good enough, is that what most of you guys good or is it enough to actually be accepted, I know the requirements are usually AAA for these schools or A*AA but because I got A*AA is that enough, or is it not enough to be guaranteed a spot, etc. Any input would be appreciated.
@DoctorDevify
@DoctorDevify 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, first of all congratulations on your predicted grades - they're amazing! i will try to answer this to my best ability. Just to confirm, your predicted grades are NOT your final grades right? Because that is very important for me to know to help answer. So Imperial's typical offer - what they give to most applicants (unless you are from a disadvantaged background) is the offer A*AA and you are correct, the A* must be in chemistry or biology and therefore maths would not be acceptible if the offer they gave you is A*AA. The "AAA" minimum to apply is where you needed at least AAA predicted grades but when you do your final exams you still needed to achieve the offer they gave you which will probably be A*AA in bio/chem (it could be AAA but it depends as i said earlier). Usually with your grades, they are perfectly fine for you to apply to imperial with and I personally think your chances are good as long as you meet the BMAT requirement later this year. Although I cant say whether its enough to be guaranteed a spot because there are multiple things the uni looks into. the most important of which i think is meeting the BMAT cutoff, having at least AAA predicted and having a good personal statement. Hope this helps and if there's anything you want to clarify with what I have just said, let me know! however, I urge you to get in touch with Imperial medicine admissions to clarify any thing you may want to know about. For other medical schools, you need to check on their website because these kind of things vary heavily. Otherwise good luck!

Devify Hi there, thank you so much for replying back, and yes these grades are only my predicted grades not my final grades, and sorry I thought that when they said on the website that typical offers are A*AA and the A* in bio or chem I thought they meant they’d only give the offers to people with predicted grades A* in bio or chem, so just to get this straight, they mean that if they would give you an offer it would be that they require you to get an A* in at least bio or chem in the REAL exams? So I’m perfectly capable of getting an offer? And I also have the chance to boost my biology grade from A to A* because I have an exam on biology when school starts up again in September, unfortunately I can’t boost my chemistry grade as students with at least one A* and all A’s are only allowed to boost one grade, so hopefully that goes well. And yes I do come from a disadvantaged background but won’t go into that on here, but with everything in account that I’ve told you and hopefully doing well in the BMAT, my chances are good right? Sorry for the paragraph just thought you’re the best person to ask and are you able to do a video on how you prepared for the BMAT, it would help out a lot. Again, thanks very much
@DoctorDevify
@DoctorDevify 4 жыл бұрын
Yep you have understood that correctly! I think you are perfectly capable of getting an offer with the grades you've said and getting that BMAT. Now it would just depend on what offer Imperial gives you, taking into conservation the disadvantaged background. I might make video about some tips for BMAT but unfortunately I can't say for sure when or if I will make it😅

TheRenaissanceman65 Yes I’ve come to realise that now, my predicted grades don’t mean much but to give an idea of the level I’m at and what I can achieve, I’ve got 15 days until my application deadline so hopefully my application is good enough, after speaking to a number of medical students and teachers, apparently having the top grades (A*/A) is impressive and what not, but what really makes you stand out is the references your teachers give you and your personal statement, I don’t know if that’s the same for physics as medicine seems to be completely different process to other courses. Also, do you happen to know what an EPQ is, I don’t know if that was a thing back in the 80’s, but essentially it’s basically just a written essay on a subject of choice (I chose genetic engineering) and I received an A* in that, but it only counts as half an A level, do you think that would put me at an advantage. Also is the “the better the university you go to, the more you’ll get paid in the future” thing actually correct, as I’ve done my UCAT and scored in the top 10% of students that take it but I can only get into Kings college university and university of Dundee with that, to get into medicine for imperial or oxford, my other two uni choices, I’ll have to take the BMAT which is a whole other headache, so is it worth me going through all that hassle or should I just settle for UCAT unis. Also I appreciate you responding to my comment, it seems like you get picked based on how much they like you haha. I was going to do physics for a level since I got an A** (9) at GCSE but from what I’ve heard from current a level students, about how impossible it seems, I’m glad I went with medicine, cheers for the reply anyway 👍.

@@DoctorDevify thank you . Also what is main criteria for securing a interview at imperial ? How important is PS in securing an interview ?? Will high BMAT secure an interview ? What is the safe BMAt score to get into imperial ?
@DoctorDevify
@DoctorDevify 3 жыл бұрын
The most important is bmat. I heard that 70% of applicants get rejected at the bmat stage. Personal statement is looked at afterwards but most people who get through the bmat stage should get an interview. There is a cut of and then they divide the bmat scores into 3 tiers. The lowest tier is the one just above the cut off and probably has a 60% interview rate (roughly around the time I applied) . The higher your bmat the more likely you are to get an interview. The cut off changes every year but I would say you're in a relatively good position with high chance of interview if your score is above 5

Hi, I'm currently in year 13 and looking to apply to Imperial Med next year in my gap year. Do you think they view gap year students differently? In addition to this, you mentioned in one of your replies to comment earlier that ICM put heavy emphasis on research in personal statements, do you have any advice on how i could get some research experience to put in my personal statement? My school didn't offer EPQ so I cannot put that into a ps, do you have any advice on alternatives to EPQ or research in general? thank you, Naz
@DoctorDevify
@DoctorDevify 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, I don't think they mind the gap year but mention how you utilized the gap year for personal growth and development and talk about what you did as they will definitely ask you in interview! Imperial is well known for their reaseach but you don't have to have done it before. You could perhaps just mention a topic you're interested in and say that you did a little crash course on it or something (I think open university does some) . In interview though make sure you mention the research and how you would like to it at med school and how imperial does a research project (there's one everyone does in year 2 for 3 weeks) that other courses don't offer etc
