I do VFX for games for a living, and I have a pretty good guess at why you couldn't see the forest fires under the water. Usually, each frame is rendered in multiple passes, and each pass does a different element. For example, one pass might be the base geometry of the level, another might be the water, and another might be the particle sprite cards, like the ones making the fires in the trees. Think of each pass like a transparent projector slide that you draw opaque things on top of, and then layer them all in a certain order at the end. But, in addition to the color and opacity at each pixel, render passes can include depth information. Depth just means the distance from the virtual camera to the thing drawn on that pixel. If you don't consider the water's depth information when deciding whether to mask out a particle, then all particles get drawn above all water. In this case, the geometry of the underwater trees would be partially obscured by the water, but the fire particles in the trees would not. The fire would be more visible than the trees, and it would look weird. If you DO include the water depth information, then all water obscures all particles behind it, as we see in the video. Not the most accurate way to render things, but it's fast and probably works for 99% of the cases they need it for in Cities Skylines.

I think the nuclear plant reduced the amount of production from 398 MW to 168 MW because it has some water stored so maybe a little bit longer and it will melt

The cooling towers of a nuclear plant, if designed correctly will maintain basically all the water in the cooling pool, as the goal of the cooling tower is to condense the water that is at least partially radiated. The majority of water leaving a nuclear reactor would be from the actual turbines being used to make the energy from the plant. Remember kids, almost all of electricity creation is finding new ways to boil water, then shove it through a huge "tooth filled tunnel" aka turbine

Matt, I must correct you. At 14:24, you talk about the Nuclear Power plant blowing up, but a nuclear power plant meltdown is not blowing up. When it melts down, it quite literally gets so hot to the point where it melts the core from the inside, it doesn’t blow up unless there is a hydrogen build up like at Chernobyl. A meltdown does not cause hydrogen build up, but hydrogen build up can cause a meltdown and in-turn explodes the plant. But then again, this case is not about hydrogen build up, but instead is just about lack of coolant for the core.

Despite the top comment, the fact of the matter about poo water without residents is 100% busted, using my experience, there was more than once irl, the buildings still being built with no residents yet and sewage already flowing. It's actually quite accurate. Construction workers are actually people. Even though they are not residents.

Commercial nuclear plants can and do both connect to municipal water and they can have their own wells. Typically you’ll see the makeup water is some high purity water sourced from the well. Municipal water can have a bunch of problematic organohalides. Now a river or, and you’ll like this, processed wastewater can be the ultimate heat sink. Without that, it’ll just turn off. Then you might see some problems within the first week, with no operator action.

The nuclear plant has cooling towers, so it recycles most of its cooling water.

Much of it escapes as steam, and I think the rest is released at a warm (just cool enough to not kill wildlife) temperature. It's recycled in the sense that it's all returned to the ecosystem such as a river, but I don't think they reuse much of the water immediately/directly. (Edit: this was off the top of my head and is inaccurate, see corrections in later comments or research it yourself)

First: Please fix that power plant's water system, that's a nuclear engineer's nightmare - almost as if it was designed, built, and inspected by architects. can you have active job sites but no residential buildings? Just Industry, Offices and the odd shop and park? Then add direct access to the highway, train station to outside connection and maybe ferry lane and airport connections if you want to have every possible way to commute. Then just see if your 'city' (or industrial park rather) will run.

Myth: if you zoom out as far as possible and use the heatmap views on the left side of the screen you can see your town mirrored everywhere one of your neighboring towns would be. (Second episode im recommending this one)

I think the power plant myth should be revisited. I don't like to point out technicalities, but game features and glitches can be pretty specific, so I will do it. The myth isn't that a nuclear power plant WHITOUT water supply will have a meltdown. It's that a nuclear power plant with INSUFFICIENT water will have a meltdown. Make a town/map with one water intake, one poop outlet, a hundred nuclear power plants and one building for one family to live in, just for the heck of it. That would probably lead to every nuclear power plant have insufficient water supply. And what would be better than seeing one power plant having a meltdown? Seeing 100 power plants having a meltdown, of course! And if it doesn't happen, at least we'd hear Matt complaining about working for half an hour to make the city just to bust the myth! 😊

Its weird the water doesnt put out forest fires. It worked in the first game. A sequel should build on the first game, not remove features.. Not to mention the jank of roads. Watching him put in roads only to see the water below the map for a second and the weird texture flickering effect when the first game didnt do either of those is really strange. I like all its improvements, but still. Also idk if matt is misreading underground water but its weird thst geothermal wants ground water. You wouldnt need ground water, you would need a geothermal spot and bring water in like with most other power plants. And the citizens just standing outside sleeping or not doing anything... Its cool but its got EA jank.

Nuclear powerplants dont go critical if there is no water, only sovietstyle like in Chernobyl do. Because in western ones the water is like a important part to the reaction. It slows down the particle so they can collide again. So if there is no water there is no chain reaction and the chain stops. Soviet style would go BOOM. They run at a supercritical point , always...😂
