French were gaulish celtic tribes , italians were etruscan tribes greek and latin tribes, in spain in portugal you had iberic and celtic tribes. When the roman empire conquered them they brought there language along with them. The genetic origins the inhabitants of Hispania, Gaul, and Italia were all the same. Northern Italy, Spain, Portugal and France ALL have same genetic base, that is mainly celtic. Therefore the languages evolved from Latin differently because the connection between the countries was blocked for centuries, not because of the different tribes in each region. And these 3 provinces ALL adopted Latin as their common day to day tongue, it wasn't like in the eastern provinces, the celtic languages in these provinces died during the empire. The term Latin refers to culture and language (in Europe) and to language and history (in Latin America).

Latin means you are a descendant of Latinus or you came from Latium (Lazio / Latina). The Language was named after the people who invented it or the area the language came from. Speaking a Latin *based* language doesn't make you Latin.

I'm Puerto Rican and Latino/a is defined as a catch-all term for people of nationality/ancestry of countries who's mother tongue is of Latin origin. Hispanic "Hispano/a" is a subcategory for specifically Spanish origin. This has become an entrenched misuse of the term because some of the former colonies continue to push the negative image of Spain and bred the nationalism that causes negative association with Hispanic that'll won't be addressable any time soon. But then again not every colony was able to maintain amicable relations with Spain like Puerto Rico to an extent.

Latinos, West Indians, Hispanics is a mixed region through and through. Most of my DNA is African but I am not 100% Black, I was born into or descended from a South American and Caribbean family that has Portuguese ancestry, I am still considered Latino, whether I speak the language or not. Race doesn't dictate culture or ethnicity. Indigenous people throughout Central and South America may not speak Spanish, doesn't make them any less Latino. Cuba, Peru, Guyana and so many other islands and countries have Chinese, Japanese and Indian populations those individuals are still considered Caribbean/West Indian/Latino. Ethnicity is used to connect groups of people with a shared culture, history and or language. The Middle East isn't a continent or a country, it's a region but the inhabitants are referred to that way or called Arabs.

I feel like all these identifications are separating us even further. To people it's cool to be able to identify yourself and where you come from, but to me it just seems like you're trying to give yourself a sense of value due to feelings of inferiority. The problem with Filipinos is that they don't speak Spanish and only a small minority of Filipinos have Spanish ancestry. It's interesting, we don't use these terms at all in my country. If you are talking about someone from another country you will say: "He's from Colombia" or "She's Costa Rican" or "Brazilian" or "Spanish" etc. (and if they are citizens you would just think of them as "Australian").

I've just always used the terms "Central American" and "South American," when I am unaware of country of origin. For those from the Caribbean, I try to use specific country names. To me it matters because I don't think that indigenous populations need to be identified by their colonizers, but by their location. Growing up in the 80s in San Francisco, a sanctuary City for those who were trying to survive the revolutions happening in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador, I met many students who were escaping horrific situations seeking a better life. one thing I find interesting though is that what I was taught when I was growing up as far as geographical locations goes, there were different names for different parts of the world then what are taught today.

If a family moved from Italy to the USA, its members would be Italo-American. But if the same family emigrated to Argentina, instead of the USA, they would be "Latino" (a new race). That's according to USA logic. Personally, (my opinion) I don't think those born in Latin/South America call themselves American, because that is generally referred to those who were born in the United States of America. (I mean, we can't call ourselves United States of Americans..that just sounds...weird.) Just like how Canadians call themselves...Canadians and not Americans. Here in this video, it talks more about ethnicity, sense of identity and touches a little on race. But in terms of nationality, it's really very simple; just where you were born and/or have citizenship in. In that case, people in South America wouldn't be calling themselves Americans but instead if from Brazil, Brazilians, if from Mexico, Mexicans and etc.

Sorry Kat. Not 100% correct. The Venn Diagram on the cover is incorrectly labeled. All French and Portuguese speaking countries (Brazil, Haiti, St. Martin - which is half French and half Dutch - Guadeloupe, etc etc) should be on the extreme left light green side. They are Latino but not Hispanic. "Latino" is a Spanish-language contraction of the term Latinoamericano, which means Latin American. This is where most of the confusion comes from, because LATINO is a Spanish term, but it covers cultures who speak other languages. Latin American (or Latino) means any culture from the Western Hemisphere that in the present day speaks any language derived from Latin (namely Spanish, French and Portuguese, because there are no Romanian or Italian colonies in the "New World.") It does NOT mean a sense of community through colonization from Spain. Filipinos (colonized by Spain) are not Latinos. yet Brazilians (NOT colonized by Spain) are. On the other hand, the Aztecs, Cariocas and Incas Pizarro and Da Gama found centuries ago were not Latinos, until they assimilated to Spanish/Portuguese colonization generations later. Finally, people in English-speaking countries can sometimes also identify as Latinos, especially if they have ascendency or recently migrated from any of the French/Portuguese/Spanish colonies in the Americas.

I identify as Spanish American because I'm legally and culturally from both countries. I cannot fathom why anyone not from Spain would identify as Spanish (seriously, lots of African countries speak French, and no one calls them French). Spaniards don't consider themselves Hispanic, though to be fair most people only know the term Hispanic because of American culture. So I guess for Spain Hispanic would be all the people originating in the former colonies who speak Spanish, and Latin American covers everyone South of the US border, no matter what they speak. I have a question. Since Brazilians (a non-Spanish speaking country) are considered Latino, why are people from countries like Guyana, Belize, Haiti, etc not considered Latino? (Especially since Haiti shares an island with DR). I always understood the term as someone from a Spanish speaking country in the Latin American region. But since Brazilians are considered Latino that messes up the definition and opens up Inquiry as to if those other countries should be considered Latino too. Latino refers to a Latin based language like Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Those languages, and many others, developed from Latin after the Roman Empire fell and spread to the Americas through colonization starting after 1492. That's why those languages are also known as Romance languages because they come from the language of the Romans: Latin.

ok just to make this clear. The term Latinamerica came from the French who wanted to differentiate Anglophone from Latin speaking people in the Americas continent back in the days of colonialism. Latin languages are: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian, Italian and Catalan. Therefore, Latins are whoever speak one of these languages. Latinamericans are those who speak Spanish, French or Portuguese and they can be black, natives, white or mixed races. The term Latino is an expression created or just used in the USA. It stereotype people from Latinamerica as being just natives when Latinamerica is composed by other races.

meh I've always felt people get way too caught up with "heritages". Wouldn't a person simply identify with the country they were born into and/or the culture they were raised in? IE Peruvian, Colombian, Brazillian, Mexican, Dominican, Puertorican, Spanish, etc... the term latino or hispanic feels far too broad and even outdated. It'd be like calling most white people "europeans", which I guess you could, but why? It'd be like if people referred to be as a "slav", which I guess is historically accurate, but I was raised in American, but taught Ukrainian culture throughout my life by parents born in Ukraine. I'm American with a deep understanding of my heritage. The fact the video has to dive into colonization from over 300 years ago seems trivial at this time.

When someone asks me "what are you" or "what's your heritage", I don't feel it necessary to give them a 300 year history lesson to explain. Ie: I was born in New Jersey and raised by parents who came from Panama. So my heritage is Panamanian, but in reality I was in fact raised in New Jersey, so I'm just American with Panamanian blood, genes, and a good understanding and respect for the Panamanian history (this isn't my background, i'm just giving an example).You don't have to trace back to Montezuma to explain "what are you". It's a can of worms that anyone could open up. Now it's tough to identify exactly what country their genes are from on the surface, so I am definitely guilty of just saying "spanish", which can quickly be corrected by saying "I'm from Panama", which I'd respond "gotcha". Well I am from Argentina but my surname and heritage are Italian. At home we eat pasta more than we eat meat and we follow Italian costumes more than Argentine ones. I am an Argentine who has just come back from New York. One of the things that surprised me most was that Latin-Americans talked to me in English, and even called me "gringo". The "Latinos" I saw in New York are very different from the people I see in Argentina everyday. Argentina was second in terms of European immigration, after the USA. But Argentina doesn't have black people -although there is a minority of indians from neighbour countries. So, to put all Latin-Americans under the same label does not make any sense. yeah I know, and the African Mexican people were segregated a lot of years, they are not present in my state, but they are a known community in parts in the south of Mexico, they're called Afro-Mexicans I think, because of the etnial differences and the strong racism that occurred in the past and shamefully, nowadays, they didn't blend in society as well as other indigenous cultures, the Chinese and Japanese people I think, in our actual days are married in most cases to Mexican partners, I have friends that are from a 4th or 3rd generation of Asian ancestors, but they actually are just maybe a 8th or a 4th asian, a flow of Chinese and Japanese people that come to live and build industries in Mexico still exist, but as I said before, they are not consider a lot like a different etnial group, cause they blend in society just as they arrive, but they still have their culture and lenguage as part of their daily life, but they don't seem to have a problem with mixing their children with Mexican people so the mixture I think (this is just me guessing) is more common than in the USA, this is maybe because in USA the number of immigrants are a lot more, so the possibilities of marrying a same etnial origin partner are bigger...

Ray kindsofgains Plenty of Mexicans are purely African, white, Asian, or a mix, and some are descended from the indigenous people of the region, making only them Native American. Mexican is a nationality, not an ethnic group.

Okay, I guess I can be more specific or just introduce myself as Redundant, I am from the Kiowa Tribe and my father (whom I do not know) was from Jalisco Mexico. -any better? (I was raised with one culture (Native, dancing etc) not the other. No hablo Español ...

This is WRONG. Latino is LATINOAMERICAN (mexico, peru, brasil, cuba....)+ LATINOEUROPEAN (spain, portugal, italia, france... ) + LATINOAFRICAN... and THE PHILIPPINES. I am SUDAMERICAN, LATINOAMERICAN, HISPANOAMERICAN, AMERICAN AND IBEROAMERICAN. This video is wrong. This girl uses the word LATINO according to the vision of the "Americans". I dont like THAT WORD "latino", I prefer LATINOAMERICANO.

She is "Americanized" and that's what shapes her views. It's no different to a categorized view a person would have in another country like Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, etc. they all view race and ethnicity in different ways based on their education and environment.

Data Base despues de 500 años del descubrimiento de América, decir que NO ERES LATINO o HISPANO, es errado, TODOS SOMOS MESTIZO YA SEA RACIALMENTE, CULTURALMENTE O AMBOS CASOS. Yo soy AMAZONICO, SUDAMERICANO, LATINOAMERICANO, AMERICANO E IBEROAMERICANO. Utilizo el español, como el ingles, y cuando visito EUROPA veo muchas cosas que tiene nuestros países con AMÉRICA. La palabra LATINO ES UN TERMINO MUY AMPLIO, PERO TAMPOCO ME MOLESTA, PERO ES MAL UTILIZADO EN EE.UU. Antes de la llegada de los EUROPEOS, tambien habia distinciones, los QUECHUAS NO SON AYMARAS, LOS MAYAS NO SON AZTECAS, LOS TOBAS NO SON MAPUCHES, LOS TAINOS NO SON GUARANIES.
