Another high line trap is to have your ST mark the DM. Forces the defenders to clear long since passing lanes into midfield are blocked. Negative is that you don’t have him on the counter

Awesome!!! I just used this strategy, in my own way, but same principles and I love to see my team locking down the opposition and smashing them on the counter. It is the one I was missing, I think I got it right now, I am thrilling.

lool, you're revealing a defensive tip that took me years to realise. I remember a long time ago, I was watching benjy in his early days (before he started asking his gf to pick his teams) and I asked how do I stop all these silly balls being crossed into my goalie box from out wide. He said, ' pull back you defensive line' - I kinda thought 'thats a stupid answer because it's the first thing you do and it still didn't stop the ball being bombed in from wide areas. So, I went back to basics and thought, ' If you can't win it, at least stop the opposition from scoring'. I had a variation to what you call the Iron Maiden.

Ive been tactic testing on the new patch today and chose dortmund just to follow the progress of a certain new wonderkid while testing. Watched this video. And i stopped my holiday mode in second season and played a game vs hoffenheim where i set my winger to man mark the opponents full backs and my two attackers to man mark the cd's. Won 7-0 and closed them down completely. The wonderkid scored 5 goals btw lmao.

Personally when I use OI to tight mark, I use the second option because sometimes the AI switch players around and I'm scared the first option won't be effective if the player switches position in game

I agree. The AI is not adverse to swapping wingers or playmakers low to high. If you're marking by player, then you have to go in and manually switch every marker every time they position swap. OTOH, by marking positions, you keep your shape when they switch, and if you're already closing down both wide men/playmakers (which you should be) then the marking is still in place.

Thanks Dalgit this is so interesting. Is this double or expedential marking only for use with AM and WM positions marking opposition Wingers and Full Backs. Not Full Backs marking opposition Wingers. At the moment I am getting great joy with my Full Backs with great defensive intelligence shutting down opposition Wingers with just Mark Tighter and Close Down More. The problem I have had with Specific Marking opposition Wingers with my Full Backs is when I have an Attack Corner. When the corner breaks down my full Backs shoot upfield to the Wingers leaving my defense with no one there. As a result I never use specific marking my full back on opposition Wingers. So guess your initiative here is for your Wingers only on the opposition flanks.

hello dear Rashidi thank you very much for your useful insight as always. i'm a huge fan of your content. i'm testing your Iron Maiden style of play in FM 21 with my Benfica save and it works wonders. i have a question, it may seem like a rather silly one as i'm not skilled as you so don't get me wrong :) i play in a 4-2-3-1 with wide inverted wingers and a attacking midfielder on the middle, if the opposition has two central defenders, who marks them and applies pressure on them? thank you very much and keep up the good work! :)

I tried using the low block against madrid using OI and marking them. Yeah, I conceded a goal ; they were all over me with attacking fullbacks. Then I said fuck this and went with the high block and pressing the back line and marking their fullbacks. We totally thrashed them and won 3 - 1, being the underdog.

If you want to play a low block you need to be able to defend in numbers or you just keep ur defensive line standard. But if you can’t defend very well then yes what you did is exactly what i would do too.

@@BusttheNet Thanks man. I used the low block with my 4231 DM formation and the opposition just had 1 shot 0 on target. I scored a goal on the counter using AF(A) and won 2-0. This definitely works.

How do you want to score goals? You want to hit them on the transition then with that mid block, you can play narrow draw the wingers in to a tight mark and specific man mark, by asking your wingers to track back. Or you can just try and force them to clear the ball under pressure with them marking the fullbacks. Both strategies work. In the second one, you are aiming to win the ball in midfield to counter, but you could end up with a packed defence since the defenders never came out. In the second strategy you are drawing them out, so your wingers need the work rate to track. Downside of this is you are depending on players/roles to play those balls like Mighten did in the video and you need an AF in attack.

Ah no downside then if you know what you are doing. So if a player is strictly left footed, then showing him to his weaker foot could exploit his weakness... loss of control, inability to shoot, cross.
