My dad drove for Greyhound from 1969 until 1990 out of Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away in 1995. Thankfully, I still remember so many things about the different buses he drove and the things he told me about them. I remember how fond he was of this bus and I remember the time my brother and I were with him in Chicago, around Christmas of 1984, I believe it was. He was scheduled to bring one of these buses to Des Moines, and it was loaded with packages; both underneath and inside, clear up to the two front rows of seats. We were so excited to get to ride on it! However, it never happened. They moved my dad to do what they called, protect, a Chicago to Des Moines run. Meaning, if bus A got full and booking went over (I think it was 10 passengers turning it into what was called a double) then my dad had to take that instead. And he sure enough did! About 2 he later, my brother and I were on a westbound bus with about 20 people on it. Honestly, it doesn't matter. I had so much fun riding the Greyhound all of those years with my dad, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Mostly everything is gone from back then. The depots in Omaha, Des Moines and Chicago have all been torn down over the decades. The garages are gone, too. Thankfully, I still have a lot of my dad's Greyhound stuff. I've got every logbook and piece of paperwork he ever had. I even have some of his uniforms, too. Best of all, is that I have a lot of great memories of spending time with my dad.

My era when your father drove, maybe he drove when I was on it? He must have seen a lot in that era, could have written a book on it too. You rode with your father, must have been a blast as a kid. Your father was good to go for sure. Good luck to you!

Was on a GreyHound from LA to Rhode Island 1978... Never want to do that again, and never did! Good service from Greyhound, a $55 ticket special, but no sleep, an aching back and leg cramps, I was 23 years old then!

Supercruiser and Americruiser bring back a lot of memories when I was a kid in the late 70’s when my Mom,brother and I would take a Greyhound every summer from LA to EL Paso,Tx. It was such a thrilling time to board the bus and the smell of the air conditioning. We would pick the front seat so we could see the road and open view and watch the driver . I would love stopping at every stop and get off to stretch our legs and eat cafeteria food or get some comic books to read. First stop would be Indio, then Blythe, arrive at Phoenix at midnight where there would be a 30 minute wait so they could clean the bus. Then I remember staring out into the desert with nothing but stars out in the sky and maybe some far away light in the distance and even far away lighting. It was magical.

I was driving this bus between Madison, WI and Chicago. It was brand new and out of the factory, There were 3 buses on that convoy. All 3 of us were pulled over at the Belvidere toll gate by the Illinois troopers. Turns out the buses didn't have the proper permits so we 3 drivers were hauled off to jail until Greyhound provided the permits and bailed us out. Ah, the memories. Great job!!

Wow, incredible that Greyhound's compliance dept wouldn't have had that covered. But you drivers being arrested was way over the top. The troopers must've been on their monthlys because they knew Greyhound as a reputable company.

In 1980 my friend in Thousand Oaks, CA bought one of the few Canadian 6's that had not been re-powered to 8V71/automatic. His bus had the 12V71 & 4 speed manual. He owned two buses for charter, a 5 for years then added the 6. I was running a Scenicruiser doing weekend and summer charters. I was teaching school at the time. For my 6 years having my tour time, I often drove his coaches if mine was down for repairs, or if he needed a driver. He was a business man who started his little company as a one bus commuter run to downtown LA. I loved taking the 6 on Vegas runs, it hit the Cajon grade just before Nevada and it would SAIL up the grade! My bus was down for repairs one weekend when I had a University Jazz Band schedule for LA to SF trip. They wanted to go up the coast route, Hiway 1, beautiful ride. I planned on his 5 but instead got the 6. FUN drive on the windy road on the cliffs, like a bloated sports car! It convinced me to switch out my bus 8V71 for the truck version 318 (8V71 with 318 hp and more torque/pep) so I added a 10spd roadranger to utilize the extra power. Fun too...

I also had a friend in Buena Park, CA in 1981 who ran a small operation - mostly the GMC "Buffaloes" - but, one of whose coaches was a MC-6 with a 12V (amounting to two twin 6 Detroits V-ed together) and a 4 speed manual. He probably picked it up from the same sale in LA yours came from. I drove it on various tours from 81-84, one of which was across the country. I remember one tour which took me to Victoria, B.C. Greyhound drivers in the same parking lot were amazed at the thing - couldn't believe what had been driving across Canada a decade earlier (I think this one had a Canadian history). It was quite a creature - a beautiful sound. With the 55 mph speed limit at the time, 4th gear was borderline too slow to drive at without breaking the speed limit.

Cool! I always wondered if there were any that weren't repowered. Almost everything that has that pre-MC-9 style has an 8V71 (with the exception of many MC5c's, and then there's MC 1 and 2, but you never see or hear/read those anywhere).

shrinkg Gordon You put a 10 speed road ranger in a bus !!!! That is fantastic man. I have driven every Hound bus out there in my 43 years, except the MC 6. I drove the old GMC with the 4 speed. The MC 5 and the MC 7 also had 4 speeds. Then we got MC 8's with automatic. I always hated them and dreaded every trip in one. Then we got MC 9's with the 5 speed. Great bus ! Then we got the MCI 102 wide body buses. They were OK except for the strange passenger door vertical opener. I was the first driver to operate the new MCI "E" model on a line run when they first came out. Later the "J" model was tested, but Greyhound did not buy them because they were just too expensive. By far my favorite was the Prevost H3 40 with 6 speed. Drove those for many years and loved them. Happy memories.

Something tells me we're talking about the same person, shrinkg gordon. This guy ran an operation out of Buena Park, CA and leased his MC6-12 several times - mostly during the summer - (along with other coaches) to a musical organization in Thousand Oaks, CA. I drove several tours across the country for the musical organization.

I’m 60 and been in love with Greyhound Bus lines all my life! Every time I saw one , I would say the “ Puppy dog bus” I couldn’t read the writing back then! I remember riding with my family from time to time from the South to the North. All the sounds and smells associated with travel by bus. We would bring fried chicken rapped in foil in a brown bag. Minimum hiring age was 24 years and remember living up North and driving to 16 & Market in Philadelphia to apply, got hired, and was scheduled to attend training in New Jersey... Then the strike happened! Never got to drive for Greyhound, but ended up as a Motorcoach Operator anyway. Spent half my life behind the wheel in the industry and have enjoyed most of it! They say if you find something you enjoy doing, you’ll never work a day in your life 😁!!

I grew up with a best friend who's family was in the charter [motorcoach], and mass transit [line-run with fishbowls] business. We had one MC-6 stop by the bus garage, circa '86, and the eight of my colleagues and myself who were there that day got to go for a ten-mile drive in that most impressively restored bus. Driving a "6", is high atop my bucket list, and that list is being 'checked off with a new urgency'. Thanks so much for posting this:-D

During the first ten years of my life I lived in Greencastle, Indiana and Greyhound had a bus depot not far from where we lived at it was possible to walk to it easily. I can recall times when I saw the MCI mc-6's arriving and departing. I always appreciated seeing them. My mom's older sister and brother in-law lived in Mount Vernon Iowa and there were plenty of times I was interested and wanted to take the bus to there and back but mom and dad did not want to go Greyhound. Yes, they were exclusive to Greyhound but could only run up and down the west coast and the northeast corridor along with Canadian service. The MC-6s were sold off by Greyhound in 1980. It was the mid-1980s before 102"-wide coaches could run the US unrestricted.

The MC-6 is kind of a funny lookin' machine, in my opinion; although I'm sure it turned heads back in the day. It's nice to see this bus still in good working order.

The MC6s were all originally manual trans buses. IIRC there were 12 total; 6 of whom went to Canada. Those retained their stick transmissions, whereupon those remaining in the USA were converted to automatic trans.

I drive them out of Calgary AB west thru the mountains. Couldn't beat the 12v in the hillsbut the engine torque made it difficult to keep a clutch in them. They always "chattered" upon starting in 1st. gear. They only had 4 speeds.

I believe Greyhound called the MC-6 the Americruiser, and it replaced the legendary Scienicruiser.

I rode the Super Cruiser many times on the Toronto-Vancouver route. Second last row left side, window seat. You were so far back, that you could not see out of the front windscreen. Those were the days. Greyhound, how could you buy a standard bus which is boring?

They switch from a 12V71 Detroit Diesel engine with 4speed manual Transmission to a 8V71 TA Detroit Diesel engine with HT740 Allison Transmission because the 12V71 isn't legal in some states because of emissions issues

So.."REverse" was ALWAYS off once retransmissioned..:) IThe pre-"Speed" looking FIshbowls and lookalikes from Flxible same deal here in Los Anngeles, SoCal in the 1970s: They had four speed manual trans with the reverse swithc, ina console of various styles specified, then retransmissioned..some Fishbowls mnight have had the switch on fdash just like this MC6 and others and there was no console to hold the swithces as on others..KI have a pic of late 70s with three spped Allison V730, but a a console, standard ashtray like, for reverse, obviosuly a late model manaul changed to auto..take carew!
