My girls go to a charter school and there is a uniform policy. I personally do not have any issues with it. I think the idea of everyone wearing the same thing definitely relieve the issue bullying due to that. That was an issue I faced in grade school. The school also talks about wearing the logo with pride and the knowledge that the students at a part of a bigger family. Also, same as me, my girls do not care what they wear. They have the option of dresses, shorts or pants.

I went thru the very same thing with my daughter and her shorts in middle school. The school would call me several times a week and tell me her shorts were too short, so I needed to come pick her up. I always told them I knew her shorts were not too short because I had measured them that morning. They said she would have to stay in the office all day. I told them that was fine because I was not coming to pick her up.

My daughter got sent home for wearing a dress that was 1/2 in too short. She had already worn the dress a few times but I guess it shrunk a little in the wash or dryer. It cost her the opportunity of being a representative her Senior year and being able to add that to her college application. She still got a scholarship (she busted her butt and took the ACT about 10 times) and will have her BSN in nursing in May but I totally agree with the whole sexist statement. How about teach these young gentleman respect and self control. There are so many kids who can't afford new clothes every time they grow or something shrinks.

Yes to the dress code. My daughter’s middle school doesn’t allow jeans with rips unless they wear leggings under them. But yet, she says boys don’t get called out for it. Also all shorts must be finger tip length and approaching the knee. When she was in elementary school, they had a reward day at the Y where they went swimming. The girls that wore two piece suits had to wear a shirt over it but yet all the boys wore were trunks. I was not nice about that.

I teach in an elementary school and our students have basically the same dress code as the junior & senior high school. (Teachers have some similar guidelines as well. 😑) Several years ago there were some upset when others wouldn’t “turn in” our littles for wearing tank tops without straps as wide as a dollar bill. Sorry, no. That being said, a few years ago I moved to teach older elementary students. That can be a tricky age group with finding clothes, so we do our best as a 5/6 team to let things lie. There’s enough drama and hormones happening that we don’t fight the dress code fight too. My first year we did have some students wearing jean shorts that literally fit like denim underwear. There’s more layers to the story, but it was hard for our team to navigate on behalf of our students while getting pushback from others.

I went to a public school in Western New York. The dress code at my high school was ridiculously strict. Shorts couldn’t be shorter than a little above the knee, I can’t remember the exact length now, but they would stop us as we entered the school and would measure the length from the end of the shorts to our knee. If the shorts were deemed too short, we either had to change into our gym clothes (as long as they were considered appropriate), have our parents bring us a change of clothes, or we would be sent home. We also weren’t allowed to wear tank tops that had straps thinner than 2 fingers wide. It got to the point where I would only wear jeans and t-shirts/hoodies all year, even when it was 90 degrees outside and the school didn’t have AC. If we tried to argue the dress code, we would get lunch detention. It was absolutely ridiculous!

Hi Jen. I am sitting here munching on some baby carrots enjoying your video. I am just past the part where you were talking about a dress code at your daughters school. Wow crazy. My daughter is in our local elementary school. Mind you it is a public school. But, the kids are required to wear uniforms and sneakers only. Which sucks. Currently our daughter is doing remote learning. So she loves that she does not have to wear a uniform right now lol. I agree with your view on the dress code though.

I agree with you on the dress code issue. It's ridiculous what some of these school's come up with. My daughter (who graduated 5 years ago) once had a "violation" and had to call me to to bring her some different pants. So I did. I left work, went home got her some jeans, took them to the school. They had put her in "in school detention" until I got there. But when I got there they wouldn't let me give them to her myself. They said they'd get them to her. Well, she got home that day and said they never called her to give her the pants. Then gave her a hard time the next day when she tried to go to the office to get the pants. It was so INSANE. Now, it's worse. They now make them wear school issue sweats that literally say "violation" on them. It's just criminal.

If you want your chickpea salad to taste like tuna, add finely minced dried sea weed. I went to public schools with dress codes but ours were for both boys and girls and were shorts/skirts lengths, girls couldn't color their hair unnatural shades and the boys had to keep their hair cut 1/2" from their collars and 1/4" above the ears - and yes, there were people with rulers. I was in high school in the late 80s and the biggest controversy was that the boys were not allowed to have pierced ears.

I am just so used to dress codes and anti-feminist views because of where I live (don't get me wrong, Utah definitely isn't all bad). It was really refreshing to hear your opinion! Good luck with the dress code. It's not like it's easy to find things that fit, are decent quality, are right for the season, are daughter-approved, and meet the dress code!

I would argue that dress codes say a lot more about the people making the rules than it does about the child wearing the clothes. First of all, I have daughters and it’s damn near impossible to find shorts that aren’t showing off their butt cheeks....and my girls are 7 & 4. I imagine that struggle becomes much worse as they get older. The first week of school, my 7 year olds 1st grade teacher called me to bitch about her shoes. I got a phone call at 10 in the morning on the third day of school over her wearing crocs instead of athletic shoes. I asked the teacher when she’d like for me to pick up a check or debit card. Confused by my question, she politely asked what I was talking about. I explained that I would gladly go shopping and pick up whatever she wanted my daughter to have and, since she was making the request, I expected her to cover the costs. *Long awkward silence* “Have a great day, Mrs. Pethtel” was the last line I heard & she hung up the phone. I will NOT tolerate anyone telling me how to dress my children. If you’re going to make demands then you best be willing to cover the expense. And who in their right mind could ever complain about glitter crocs!?!? Crocs are God’s gift to feet! I said what I said.....😂

Yes, completely agree with you about the dress code. I’m n the UK where it’s the norm for kids to wear uniform to school but even then, schools are still getting themselves worked up about the length of girls’ skirts and if they have Lycra in them. Apparently it’s a ‘distraction’. 🙄 I deliberately didn’t send my daughter to my sons’ school for this reason, I don’t want her to be receiving this kind of nonsense in her formative years.
@tammyrowland604 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Jen! Dress codes are sexist, I agree. Please let the school call you or your husband and not berate your daughter. If you don't stand up for her, then who will. Let's worry less about what one wears and more about what one learns at school. Loved this video. When I got the notice, I had to watch it before going to the gym.

Yep, I got a call on the first day of school this year saying that my ten year old daughter needs to wear a bra to school. I was like "well good luck trying to enforce that rule on a child that has autism and sensory issues" I was ready to go to war with them if they pressed the issue further.

As a mom of boys I 100% agree with your assertion that dress codes are meant to police girls bodies. It also abdicates my responsibility as mom of boys to teach them that girls are not responsible for how they feel or react. I do not want the school doing that. I want to teach them they are responsible for themselves and that girls are not sex objects to be objectified. I don’t care what they are wearing.

My school, growing up, would send us home if our shorts were a quarter of an inch shorter than the designated length requirement. It's absolutely ridiculous. If I think my kid is covered a reasonable amount, that should be good enough. I went to school in the rural deep south and we weren't allowed to wear shorts or sleeveless tops to school no matter how hot it was. At high school graduation, I was told I couldn't have my bangs showing under my cap and that if I didn't comb them back so they would not show, then I wouldn't be able to graduate. I am still pissed about that more than 30 years later. 😃 I am not a fan of trying to tell any person what they can or can't do with their own body. People can live their own religious based beliefs however they want, but freedom of religion does not give them permission to force their beliefs on someone else. Why is it the people who scream their religious rights are in jeopardy when they don't like the Starbucks Christmas mug or someone else saying happy holidays, think they can force their beliefs on others?
