I tend to sow somewhat heavily and then move the seedlings on before they are too big and competing with each other. Seems to work ok with our painfully slow springs. This was a great video and you did a great job explaining why heat-loving annuals aren’t appropriate for winter sowing

I've done winter sowing for years and I love it! I use gallon milk jugs (the semi-opaque ones are fine, it doesn't need to be be 100% clear). The majority of plants I start are perennials but I do some annuals as well. My biggest challenge is to limit how many containers I sow - it's so easy to start the seeds but more effort to plant everything once they germinate (and to figure out where to put everything!)
@monawolfe4 жыл бұрын
Margie Crawford I know what you mean, I’m already freaking out trying to figure out what I’m going to put where and preparing containers. I can’t believe how much seed companies charge for shipping on those tiny little packets so it just makes sense to order more...so it’s not our FAULT! 😊

@keelyharra-shepard70794 жыл бұрын
@@monawolfe yeah, unfortunately it's the postal system charges that cause the seed companies shipping prices to be what they are - it's a minimum of like $5 to go anywhere in the country with a envelope that size priority shipping. I'm looking into selling seeds that I save from veggies and flowers, and wanted to offer free shipping, but the customer only orders 1, the shipping you pay out more than cancels the price of a $2 seed packet! You can send it in a first class envelope, but there is no tracking which customers like! So, I feel stuck- at least charging the minimum the po charges me. Some places charging $7.95 is baloney tho! Unless they have employees I guess..

So glad to see you do another video on this! I started mine a couple of weeks ago after watching your WS video. I used Simply Orange or Simply Lemonade bottles which we actually drink. I didn’t use tape, I just cut through the bottle all the way and slid the top over the bottom by cutting a little slit at the corner of the bottom part. No tape necessary. I used plastic forks like you did on yr last video bc I had a basketful of them laying around, facing outwards. Since the bottles are clear and smooth I can easily read the labels from the outside. I also put all my little soldiers in a clear plastic tub, looks less messy and keeps the wind from getting to them. Later after germination I can put the top on if there’s a frost. 💕🌿🌸

I have found an easy method for making holes in the bottoms of the jugs. I cut my jugs first, with lids on for air pressure (for that first stab), then hinge the jugs open. I place the jugs on soil or other soft material, and using a screwdriver, working from the inside of the jugs, poke holes through the bottom. You won't believe how fast it goes! I use a skinny philips head screwdriver. It's just, poke, poke, poke, poke. Super easy. Leaves nice round holes too. I use to use a drill and on the outside of the bottle. Like the knives, I had to be careful it didn't slip. The inside method, with a screwdriver, works great! Kathlyn in Texas

Yuliya, I have a question, can I winter sow cleome? Their seed needs cold stratification, so my thought it would be a perfect method of starting them outside. What do you think?

I've been watching you for the past year. Your home and garden are beautiful! Question - I just learned about the winter sowing method recently - I live in zone 6B (SW PA). Is it too late to winter sow larkspur, sweet peas and other frost tolerant flowers?
@ydoyougarden4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ginger! No, not too late. I will still be winter sowing for another couple of weeks :)

Thank you Yulia.... I live in zone 8A. Do you think mid February is too late to start WSing?
@ydoyougarden4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't hurt to try. Maybe just a few jugs. Make sure you give them little extra water if it is getting really warm where you are. 😊

How much of a head start do you think you get doing it this way? Like 3-4 weeks?
@ydoyougarden4 жыл бұрын
Yes, about right 😁 Most importantly the plants are very healthy

I saw this video and before I watched it I yelled to my husband “Please do not recycle my jugs!!” Lol. I am doing it - we are moving and I thought 💭 who has time? Well this girl does!
