As a lifelong thrifter, the only "bad" thrift stores are those without fitting rooms. In those circumstances, wear very thin, tight-fitting apparel and as an added bonus arm yourself with a sister who is willing to hold a blanket for you 😂

I always see Americans complain about their op shops yet from what I've seen (even from small town youtubers) their op shops seem about 3x bigger than even the biggest op shop I've ever seen. I've legit never seen one in real life that has trolleys for example.

Yeah, I’ve heard that comparatively American thrift stores are pretty lit but everyone still complains 🤷♀️ maybe they’re just impatient? Thrifting is usually a lot slower than fast fashion so maybe it’s just an adjustment thing?
@raining_trees2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely an impatience thing! We are used to scrolling through websites or shopping in retail stores where everything is pre-sorted and there's one of every garment in every size. I went thrifting with my friend and he didn't find anything while I found a lot. Sometimes that happens ofc but afterwards he also explained how he doesn't like having to dig for good finds. Many also don't like going thrifting on a regular basis. Which I mean...does suck to do, but it's also kind of fun. And more importantly it's better for our wallets, our closets, and the environment. Yet people still choose convenience and fast fashion :(

this is a great reminder! i recently moved to a new city and visited my local thrift stores and didn't find anything and immediately defaulted to "oh i just don't have any good thrift stores near me now.". the points you brought up in this video are so true and encourage me to go back to my thrift stores, be patient, and try again! ^^

Yes to all of that, especially the diy part. At this point I borderline just look for items I can turn into a piece that I love because, like you said, thrift shops are 90% garbage 😅

You aren't wrong. Sometimes I show on Instagram some of my finds but what folks don't see is that I walked around the city and went to different 7 thrift stores and found like one piece here and another in another store xD. I still find my favorite type of sweaters for winter in the racks where is more guided for "old folks" or sometimes in the kid's section some 14/16years old sizes are like an M or Large of adults. Going regularly to thrift stores is what makes me find things and I walked a lot of times out of them with nothing on my hands.

I think a lot of people who say they have no good thrift stores are also not willing to wear odder or not in fashion clothing, and thrift shops don't really cater to any particular trend, so as you said, you have to look at *everything.* Thrifting is a day-long event for me. I basically look for anything black, red, or purple that looks like a vampire or a witch would wear it, and those are my guidelines for shopping. 😂

I have almost the exact same style. Black green and purple + evil witch vibes lol

Living in the Midwest fashion in general sucks and you just can’t find alternative stuff; finding jeans that aren’t skinny jeans wasn’t a option until this year...when that trend died in 2017? Thrifting typically sucks too but that’s part of what’s great about it. Authentic vintage when you find it is usually a dollar while fast fashion skinny jeans are marked up. Sometimes I only find one authentic vintage piece at a time these days but it’s always so special and fun to find one! I found authentic 1970s David Bowie looking bell bottoms for 2.99 right in the Midwest a year ago and I’m still so thrilled about it. I never would’ve thought I’d find something like that in my region at all let alone thrifting but it does happen.

raises her hand to add to this old-ass conversation* Each time i've gone to my local thrift stores they don't have tops and dresses in my size. I don't need any more bottoms or shoes.

Impatience is like a key factor here cause thrifting takes a good amount of time and some people just do not realize that the hunting part is pretty much what it is. A thrift store is organized chaos and i guess that throws people off lol. I moved to a different area so I have noticed the massive change in thrift shops cause the ones in smaller towns will have more vintage or pastels, but around here in a city area it’s more difficult to find what I want. It doesn’t discourage me it just means I have to try a bit more and it makes it more rewarding :)

Oh! And a lot of quirky neighborhoods and shopping districts in major cities have GREAT secondhand shops for alternative fashion. Rag o Rama in Little Five Points in Atlanta is a great example

I get what you're saying but i also understand the people who can't find any good thrift stores. First of all, i think you kind of have to get used to thrifting but i also know that there really are cities with not many thrift stores. I live in berlin so i'm pretty lucky cuz there are many thrift stores but when i went to Gdańsk and searched for some thrift stores there were litterally only two small shops that were far away from my house, so yeah some of you definitely have it easier when it comes to thrifting, that's what they're trying to say ig
@absotivelypawsilutely5 жыл бұрын
Thrift shops in the UK are very different and much smaller, but it's still doable, especially if, as you say, you ignore the age/gender labels the store puts out, especially if you're 5ft like me xD
@TheStitchess5 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard you guys don’t have any big shops like goodwill or value village, just the little charity shops. I honestly like those better but there is the obvious downside of not having as much to choose from.
@absotivelypawsilutely5 жыл бұрын
@@TheStitchess usually it's about 3-5 small racks and then odds and ends. But I have gotten lucky and found some really nice items. But I'd still love to find somewhere a little bigger as you say, just for a but more selection! But gotta keep checking in.

I feel like it takes practice. Like everyone you thrift (like really thrift) you’re pushing your endurance and strengthening your eye to find gems, I’m talking about this like it’s an Olympic sport lol. I remember when I first went thrifting like 5 years ago I found a couple of items and I only truly like one of them to this day. Now when I thrift, at that same store, I can find way more pieces and majority of them stay in my closet for longer periods of time. This is something you must perfect before the goods are presented to you

You must earn the goods lol

Plato's Closet is good and it's a chain. They only accept current trends so if you're looking to avoid digging through a bunch of old 90s and 80s stuff it's pretty decent. Not so much for alternative fashion, but if you need modern stuff for a job interview it's a good choice though I'm not sure about their business ethics

Do you have any advice for thrifting plus size clothing pieces? I never can find anything in my style :c

thrifting is fun when you actually find something but damn is it disheartening as a plus size (24-26) in the midwest where theres no alt fashion and when there is its /never/ in your size
