This is one of the greatest interviews of any drummer I have ever heard so glad I found this! Thanks for this gem while we grieve over losing this wonderful man and drummer. R.I.P.

Very intelligent guy-personable , articulate and a great drummer musician. Very underrated and needs to be recognized much more. Very good player and fun to watch. Thanks Butch for your great attitude and talent you offered us all!!!

Good to see this wonderful interview again, now after Butch has passed. He’s passing on major knowledge here! I had the pleasure of seeing Butch perform with Basie. He was musically very fantastic, and also gave it that showmanship thing. So great!!

Butch was a true gentleman and a first class drummer/musician! I have met him a couple of times in Sweden and he was always very nice and told stories from the Basie band. We talked about the late great Sonny Payne once (one of my favorite drummers) and how he worked with the band and influenced big band drummers including Butch and myself. R.I.P. Butch!

I am a drummer and drumming instructor. I am also a radio announcer. As I mentioned in my comments below, I can't say enough about how excellent Monk and Michael are in this visit with Butch Miles. They knew just how to set up Butch and then just let him "erupt" like a volcano... as they politely listened!!! There was also a gentle intelligence in their demeanors. Bravo Michael, Monk, and Butch.

Thanks Joe. This interview was done on our very first trip in March of '95. I recorded a second conversation with Butch via zoom. Monk

What a gem! Butch was an is an incredible drummer, in my opinion up there with Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and Louie Bellson. His work with the Basie band was a huge influence during the 70s.

I just discovered this guy Today and I’m in love! He sure is the new generation of Krupa and buddy rich , watched a 1979 concert with count Basie and I’m not a drummer but in a band the drummer is definitely my hero, i drum a bit as a hobby and this guy is definitely my new hero! That was some real 30s big band drumming he did on that recording using the whole kit as any drummer should if you ask me

My drumming partner, Russ Moy and I did a drum clinic with Butch Miles. Butch is a tremendous showman, but who could also back it up with phenomenal technique and taste. In other words...it wasn't just sizzle and style with Mr. Miles..., but true "substance." He was also a fantastic reader. By the way, do you notice how both gentlemen here are superb conversationalists with Butch?

Just found out about this guy today! I’m a hobby drummer, I hear and I guess kind of know I’m good with rhythms but my self-confidence is not much to talk about , I’ve been drumming for years mainly on iPad but now I’ve got a dd65 and i use it with superior drummer 3 , I just started watching the interview but allready I’m inspired, his learning curve sounds a lot like mine (maybe not so many hours straight 😅) but like him I also learn a lot by just listening to records or KZbin trying to decode what is being played when on the kit and learning when to break through for example a horn segment or guitar if rock or pop, it may be a stupid or naive thought but I think you can get pretty ok just by listening and hit around on the kit as you listen, to see what combinations that fit plus learning to hold the rhythm on for example hi-hat , the pedals on the dd65 is notoriously bad so I rarely use kick drum 🙈 or hi-hat pedal🙈🙈 but I hold the rhythm by hitting a pad with a closed hi-hat assign to it or the ride cymbal, i feel like I’m sort of cheating by skipping foot work but right now it’s just the easiest way🙈 sorry just got so inspired I had to tell about my progress 🤩🤩

That's why the chicks stay clear of drummers after the gig.....!
