Just the perfect storm of passion from the creator, humor that appealed to kids and adults alike, timeless quotes, and high marketability, as well as being easily meme-able. It truly was a one-of-a-kind show. Even though Gravity Falls is probably my favorite cartoon of the 2010s, I don't think it even holds a candle to Spongebob, or the legacy that Steve left behind.

I stopped watching SpongeBob about 10 years ago but I still have a great respect for Stephen Hillenburg. I was 9 years old when the show first aired and I loved it. It made me laugh whenever I was feeling blue. One of my all-time favorite episodes is the very first Christmas special they made. I still watch it every Christmas (it sort of became a tradition in my house growing up). It was a great episode. The world has lost a great talent in the animation industry and he will be greatly missed. Thank you, Mr. Hillenburg for everything you did. We will never forget you. RIP 😔

In the late 90s I had the same babysitter he did when he was a kid. Spongebob is a wonderful work and it really helped define my personality and sense of humor, even today. Looking back as an adult now, I see that he and his crew were really writing about life. The show has some really deep messages in some episodes (Band Geeks, Ripped Pants, Squirrel Jokes, and even Help Wanted, to name a few), and you can really feel the love and care he put into his writing, whether it be a deeper message or just a stupid joke. His show taught me to laugh at myself and not take anything too seriously. He will be missed. RIP Thanks for posting this, Mr. Hartman. I can see your genuine care for your friend and colleague. Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom were some pretty damn good shows too.

Most celebrity deaths I hear about I gasp but then I continue my day normally. Today this has not left my head. I still can't process that this man has left us. Spongebob was one of the first cartoons I ever watched back around '04 when me and my brother were younger and we watched the movie together and too this day I still watch an episode if I get the chance too. Rest in Peace to a man who made a revolutionary cartoon series.
