Butler Place opened in 1940 to provide quality housing to Fort Worth residents in need and became a cherished home to more than 400 families. However, cut off from the rest of the city, Butler Place was also an island that separated its residents from jobs and opportunity. After 80 years, Butler Place public housing community closed for good in 2020. This short documentary celebrates fond memories of Butler Place and the modern policies that allow former residents to choose affordable homes across Fort Worth with better access to jobs and good schools.

I was on my way to The Cutting Edge haunted house attraction on Lancaster Avenue, I ended up coming to the abandoned housing. I could sense the history of this place. I looked it up on Google and I'm still touched by the historical value it holds. I'm from Dallas and ran across this place by accident, but really it was the spirit whom lead me by this place. Im grateful

This was my home for over 20 years. A lot of good people came from here. There was problems, but it was a community, where people actually looked out for one another.

I lived in the Ripley Arnold Housing Projects in the mid to late 60's. Had a lot of good memories with the exception of my bike being stolen once. All units were kept up and we mowed the grass with rotating blade style push mowers. Lived at 512 W Bluff, won't ever forget it. Went back a few years before they tore it down, drove through quick my wife couldn't believe we actually lived there. It had changed a lot. Did just about all our shopping at Leonard's. Road the subway all the time. Got cardboard boxes from the local furniture store to slide down the hills behind our building. Went to Petersmith and Nash elementary schools. The local Methodist church had many activities for us kids. Remember making many trips to the Brantley Hotel store. Good memories.

Can someone please please tell me it’s not being torn down yet? There were so so so many abandoned kitties there I really wanted to try and save (all adult ones trusted me enough to pet/hold them) but my brakes went out on me about 2 months ago so I haven’t been able to go check on them and I’ve been super worried!😭😭💔 they’re all so sweet and deserve loving homes not to be picked up to be euthanized or left there for construction to start😭😭😭

Ps yes I have permission from police to be there at any time. They know me and my little sister used to go by after work to feed the kitties lol
