Another mistake I was always taught was that "overmixing" could cause the primer to kick much faster. Thank you for doing what you do to help the people that simply don't know how any of this works. Wish this was available 10 years ago I had to go to a technical school or get yelled at by an older tech just to learn something. This would've been much easier.

Most of what I now about paint and paint prep I learned from Donnie Smith in the past 12 months, and just last weekend I finally sprayed metallic base and clear to finish off my Jeep restoration, completely amateur DIY. These are the best paint/prep info videos on the web, inspiring me and giving me confidence to take on a huge project. Donnie - you're humble, wise and patient - thanks for teaching me so much! My Jeep looks amazing, a dream come true.

These type of comments makes me want to get back to making videos soon. Thank you, Donnie

Body work done, now about ready to spray some panels. Oh yeah, this is the first auto(my personal vehicle) I've ever painted and I want to thank you for your excellent, easy to follow videos. I tried watching videos from several other posters but most had me searching for something better for whatever the reason just minutes into them. I very much appreciate how you developed a library by steps in the auto body and paint process. My confidence and knowledge quickly and dramatically increased once I found one of your vids. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience with the world of us DIY. I would have not started this project yet without your help. I have to admit, my body work looks as good as shop pay work at a mid level shop. It took me a decade(no not really)but it's tight and right. Many thanks sir

I'm glad you mentioned the audio issues. So many people of KZbin think they can be heard when they walk away from their camera or when they're in an empty, echo-chamber room. Drives me crazy. If you are truly interested in maintaining professional, clear audio, I use the Azden brand Pro WM - WR. The WM you wear on your person somewhere, concealed if you like and clip a little mic to your collar, t-shirt or maybe even inside your respirator. It connects the wireless radio WM to the WR which is mounted by the camera and receives your audio then passes it over to the audio in jack on your camera. Just look it up, it's a very good thing for consistent audio quality. Again, only if you're interested in professional quality.

Yes very wise words, I've been painting for over 35 years and have seen some changes in paint technology, and one rule I have always followed and have said is, read the darn instructions, some poor guy spent hours writing these so the least we can do is read them. And as you said, the data sheets are there for a reason.

You're right about people putting on too much paint or primer. I've watched a lot of KZbin videos on painting cars and I don't know how many times I've heard someone say " I'm just going to put a light coat on for the first coat " and then they go ahead and put enough paint on for two complete coats !

If there is no damage, you do not need to use body filler. Filler is for filling lows. If it is down to metal, I would apply epoxy primer. Then I would just sand and apply filler to the low areas. Thanks for watching!

Hello, when you say “ I would just sand and apply...”do you mean we can sand the epoxy primer? Or do I need to putting a sand able primer over the epoxy primer then wet sand for base coat? Thanks, Chris.

improper prep of the metal or filler are the chief causes of the need to "over prime". Flash time is the time it takes for primer to basically lose its wet look. I like that this guy emphasizes reading the material data sheet...a smart bodyman is one who reads!!!

Thanks for answering my question about mandatory primering first before topcoating one single panel. I have a decent hood, which just wanted sand up and spray, Not wasting time or money priming the entire hood, there is no filling involved and no bare metal. I just remember the days back in the '70's when I used to pull the car under a cool tree and sand and spray it then go out in the same car later that day!

A good video on the technic of laying down epoxy primer and the primer coat. Gald he pointed out the importance of feathering the primer coats onto edges for a good blend with painted area. I am about to shoot a epoxy/primer combination on a restoration project where I stripped part of fender down to bare metal, but the rest of the fender has its original paint. I decided to go with epoxy vs. etching primer because you can lay your plastic filler (bondo) repair on top of the epoxy. I had an area that I found pocked with some rust after I stripped the paint off it with a wire wheel. I am going to use a mild metal etching acid from Eastwood to kill the rust first. Then I am going to use the epoxy over the bare metal after properly prepping and cleaning the bare metal for the epoxy. I will lay my body filler down, sand it and then prep the area before shooting the primer over that. Thanks! This series has some good tips for an amature, DYI bodyman like myself, working on a resto project at home!

The only primer that body filler is recommended to be applied over is epoxy. I would not apply it over primer filler. You can spray primer filler over body filler and block sand the primer to smooth it up. I hope this helps!
