I first went to the Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival) in Sapporo when I was traveling around Hokkaido with friends who were studying in Japan in 1978. The snow sculptures were amazing, but I'm from Hawai'i, and my feet froze after walking around in the snow in leather boots with thick socks. (We noticed residents wore water-proof rubber boots.) Of course, we went to the Ramen Alley and had Sapporo miso ramen with corn and butter and ate lots of delicious seafood and dairy products all over Hokkaido. The same dishes aren't the same in Tokyo. Hokkaiko is also great to travel and eat your way through in the summer when it's cooler than the usual sweltering Japanese heat and humidity.
