There are many misconceptions about goldenrods in the butterfly garden. While many species are too aggressive for a small space, there are several that do well in the confines of a butterfly garden. This video covers 12 eastern North American species that are both good garden candidates and easily found at native plant nurseries and seed suppliers.

A native plant sale coming up just released their list of available plants. I looked this video back up to see if I could add any of their species of goldenrod to my yard. I think I’ll try the gray goldenrod! Thanks for the video!

My goldenrod is just great to see in the late summer/early fall. I just like to stand and watch the pollinators feast on its pollen. Plus, it’s great to see it swaying in the summer breeze on a summer evening.

It is a great looking plant, especially in the breeze. I am always amazed at the amount of pollinators goldenrod draws.

The field goldenrods are awesome for pollinators and are great in large spaces. We have a ton of the on our farm. Can be a bit much in a garden setting though.

I have small goldenrod that prefers afternoon sun. It blooms longer and hosts caterpillars. The tall goldenrod grows in a clump preferring full sun. Attracts many pollinators and has a pleasant scent.

There are so many goldenrods, I hope you do a follow-up. I have several in my garden, including the dread Solidago canadensis - Canada Goldenrod. I have a large yard so it can stay after a june haircut. One that grows in my dappled sun area is Solidago ulmifolia - Elm-leaved Goldenrod. It brings a lovely splash of yellow to shadier areas.

The diversity of goldenrod is amazing! Canada goldenrod can be a bit much for small spaces, but is an excellent plant in larger areas. Like you stated, there are ways to control it. Elm-leaved goldenrod is native to my area, but it is not common.

To my fellow Ontarians, S. speciosa is no longer considered to be native to Ontario. The SW occurrences have recently been reclassified as Solidago rigidiuscula and the NW occurrence has been reclassified as Solidago pallida. Both of these species are in the S. speciosa complex and you may still see references to S. speciosa in government documents. Sadly, I have not been able to find seed sources for either S. rigidiuscula or S. pallida.

Good to know. As native plants continue to gain more attention updates to species range are going to become more common. Common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca, is a species that is now known to be growing in parts of the southeastern US that it was not historically found in. Also, as genetic studies are being done some species are being reclassified into several species.

Hey there! How do you deadhead them and will they rebloom?
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology 10 ай бұрын
Just clip off the flower heads with a pair of pruning shears once they quit flowering. Some may try and reflower, but the cool weather usually catches up to them before most can.
