Own swords for home defense, since that's what the ancestors intended. 400 million taiping rebels break into my house. "肏你妈" As I tie up my Manchu ponytail and grab my duel butterfly swords. Cleave the first man clean through, spilling his guts everywhere. Lunge at the second man with my guandao, miss him entirely, eat the neighbors dog in frustration. I have to resort to the hongyipao mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "笨蛋" the cannon blows up and kill 40 million people. Steal the filthy red barbarian’s opium and throw it out of the house. He lays siege to my house, shelling it repeatedly. Having no pets to eat, I resort to eating my family instead, until I eventually accept the hairy barbarian’s treaty. Just as the ancestors intended.

They were used a lot by sailors. Old ship manifests even list them. I have an antique that looks like a smaller European boarding cutlass but with a thick chopping blade. They also have a ton of history in coastal areas so they may originate as nautical weapons.

By European standards the Cutlass had a thick chopping blade, the heavier blade set it apart from the saber from which it was derived then the profile changed to something that resembled a machete which allegedly was where the machete took its original form from.

@@ravioli_826 it's fascinating, I'm enjoying reading about the butterfly in your comments, I think the blade on the machete has further changed depending on where it is used, south American tools are generally light and thin because of the type of foliage but the original jump from sword to tool took place on the sugar plantations in the Caribbean and they are still very thick, if you include the parang from SE Asia it is in the middle because it must deal with foliage heavier and lighter than the sugar cane... And also cooking and everything else but is not a descendant of the Cutlass unless I have missed something. Ralf Martingdale of Sheffield still manufacturers their original pattern machetes for the sugar plantations and has managed to go full circle supplying blades to various militaries.

Llyod, those look great! The butterfly swords are one of the few weapons we train with in wing chun. Their relatively small size and paired nature allow most of the unarmed techniques in the system to be adapted to the swords with a little practice. The hooks on the back serve a few cool purposes. First, they act as a handguard for the back of the blade, protecting the hand or allowing the wielder to trap an enemy's weapon in a style similar to a European sword breaker. Alternatively, the you can stick your thumb up there and use the hook to quickly flip the sword around into a reverse grip, letting you adapt forearm blocks and elbow strikes into blocks and attacks with the blade.

These blades are used as if you would use your own hands if they also had blades on them. Treat the hooks like thumbs and the blade is the fire fingers together. Now imagine someone catching and trapping a hand or foot in them, controlling and flaying up the limb, followed by body shots. You learn them after the 9 foot pole is in one particular martial art so your wrists are so conditioned they are like an extension of your arm. Combine leverage, trapping and a sharp edge and these are brutal “hands” in close combat.

Self defence, for use against brigands. . . sure. I must remind myself, next time I'm confronted by someone wielding a pair of crude short swords like those that they're probably just defending themself against MY brigandry.

Wu Dip Seung Dou! We use a modified version of them in Wing Chun. They are known as “Baat Cham Dou” after the weapon form which translates to: “8 Slashing or Chopping Swords”. They were traditionally carried as a personal weapon, akin to a pistol as self-protection in modern times. The other weapon of the system is the pole. So you have a battlefield weapon and a personal weapon. The butterfly swords were also very easy to conceal.
