HA HA ha ha haaaaa…! THANK you for both capturing AND posting this!! I was at that first Lollapalooza - I mean, not at this particular California one, but at one of the Lollapalooza iterations that first year of touring Lollapalooza, the day of shows in early August 1991, at a terrible venue in Tinley Park, Illinois: really cool fun day, but wretched sound, and mean seating-area bouncers, much better to be on the lawn - and I was already well acquainted with the Butthole Surfers, not so much with half the other acts that day (this was before Nevermind had even dropped, mind you… I think…? so every indie act and every new act ripping off the “indie sound,” or “grunge,” hadn’t yet been signed - people even still said “indie,” instead of “alternative,” if anyone can remember that far back - so I knew Jane’s Addiction and Butthole Surfers and a bunch of others, but Nine Inch Nails, for example… Nine Inch who?), and I was used to only ever seeing Gibby and Paul 🤪 in near-total darkness, shrouded in fog and lit only by film projections of sex change surgeries and 1950s sock hops, with EVERY OTHER LIGHT of the lighting rig aimed AT the audience with the dial set to “maximum seizure,” so… imagine my surprise to see them stride out in broad daylight, no fog, no effects, no projections, or at least they weren’t visible in the sunlight; they were only the third act of the day, I think, out of close to 20 or 25 across two stages, and only about 1/10th the total eventual audience had so far trickled in, they were probably there for JA headlining, and they were more interested in the concession stands than in the authors of _Locust Abortion Technician_ and _Hairway to Steven._ Then, almost at the outset of their act, Gibby - from nowhere - whips out that shotgun and starts FIRING IT OVER THE CROWD… and _somehow,_ with that and that alone, plus their music, they somehow held the crowd’s attention for their _whole set,_ and - frankly - to me were probably the most memorable act of the whole day! They pretty much stole the entire day. 🙂 And I’ve been looking for more footage of their Lollapalooza ‘91 performances pretty much ever since, so, again - THANK YOU!!! ❤️🎸❤️

Surprised this has only gotten 150 views and no comments. This is the version of Bong Song from "The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt" cd. The crowd doesn't seem all that enthused seems to me. Probably would have been a cooler show if it had been at night or something, and if they had used some cool effects or something.

Im about 98% sure I was in the audience for this; the headliners were Janes Addiction and the co-headline was Siouxsie and the Banshees, who had just barely become chart relevant with Kiss Them For Me.... The Butthole Surfers may seem like a strange choice but seriously the band following them was Ice-T so it was just a weird, weird vibe all around. Plus there was just so much goddamned smack going around the Bay Area in early 1991, and honestly I'm guessing at least half the audience were junkies looking to spiritually commune with their one true god Perry Ferrell.

I was at this concert, this was still really early in the day and a lot of people were still arriving. Butthole Surfers are way better in a dark club anyway with their diehard fans, I'm pretty sure half the people here had no idea what they were witnessing. Everybody just wanted to see janes addiction. It was still a great show though.
