Jess, please react to "The Phantom Agony" by Epica: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3LPg5lvpstsmpI It's from their 2003 debut album and it's still one of their epic masterpieces. Simone actually uses mixed voice more often than pure head voice. I still think you'll love it regardless :) She's actually quite good at this mixing. The blond woman (a member of the choir) in the video is Amanda Somerville who was Simone's vocal coach in the past.

Keep it up. Metal is the most demanding genre for vocals and has more variety & stage presence demands. Not to mention complex logistics and timing & levelling with intense distraction of lights and sound. So the more that good to great vocalists and coaches hear metal, the better they will get at teaching more people extreme styles safely, the more will find "their" genre. Overall you might see tens of thousands in a decade become as good as Floor, Simone or Jess here... And not only in metal but in all genres. Music will be genre-less and astonishing. The man who shouts "Floor Jansen" at the end with a growling voice is Mark Jansen (no family relation). Both he and Floor were together in a band called After Forever in the 90s/early 2000s until Mark was dismissed from the band due to creative differences. He went on to found Epica (then called Sahara Dust) with his girlfriend at the time - Simone. Simone and Floor are close friends and have been for years - this is why they have such good chemistry on stage. Mark and Simone are no longer a couple, but they still work very well together. Simone is married with Oliver Polotai, the keyboards player of another metal band : Kamelot (in fact she was pregnant during this show which is why she didn't headbang as violently as Floor xD ) . Very early Epica (then named Sahara Dust) was in fact Kamelot's support band during their Epica tour (from their namesake album), and it is from Kamelot's Epica album title that the name of band comes from. Kamelot was the support band during Nightwish's 2012 Imaginaerum US tour, during which then-Nightwish-vocalist Anette Olzon fell ill minutes before their Denver show. Kamelot's session vocalists Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz covered for Anette and the show went on while she was hospitalized. Nightwish's decision to go forward with the show upset Anette and she publicly criticized the band on her blog. This was the last straw in Anette's and Nightwish's already troubled relationship and days later, the band fired her, with Floor acting as her replacement for the remainder of the tour. We know the rest of the story. Elize Ryd was also considered by Nightwish as a vocalist - way back in 2005 when they fired their first vocalist, Tarja Turunen. They thought Elize was too young and inexperienced at the time and went with Anette instead. Elize went on to found her own band, Amaranthe. Unrelated to this, on their first album with Anette, Nightwish released a song titled Amaranth. Is your head spinning yet? XD

@@jessicasopranonotes Strongly seconded - Floor sings the alto and Simone the soprano part, and it is wonderful, not to mention showing off Floor's range, able to sing either alto or soprano, and with just about every texture imaginable. She also has a growl which is down in a range even I can reach, as a pure bass! And to hear a metal audience silenced to appreciate a piece of music like that shows how musically educated most metal fans are. It is from deep in the sacred musical catalogue, which is a long way from what most people would expect metal fans to be appreciative of. I'll try to add a green heart, but kinda difficult on a PC. I'll see if it works: 💚 Floor and Simone are long time friends, and it shows! This was a special for 10 years of Epica, hence the live full orchestra and mixed voice choir, all individually mic'ed. HUGE shoutout to the audio techs who had to wire up, test, balance into groupings (you'd never be able to mix it otherwise), and mix over 150 channels live. Sound check must have started at 9AM to be ready for an evening concert! I know it took over 3 hours for just the male voice choir I was in when we recorded (live we didn't use amplification). It must have taken a similar time for the orchestra, then there is the band and lead vocalists!

Mark was in Floor's first band After Forever, he used to date Simone so Floor has known her since she was is high school. Epica is symphonic metal with death, power, & progressive metal influences. MaYaN tends to be a little heavier symphonic death metal. Mark & Arien (Drums) are in both bands simultaneously. If you want to check out more Epica I would suggest Design Your Universe or Consign to Oblivion. Because of Covid, Floor did some covers in her home studio (in Sweden) of Heart's "Alone", Lara Fabian's "Adagio" and M83's "Oblivion". Super!

Floor Jansen (from Nightwish) joins Epica as a featured guest on this song. Simone (the redhead) is the front woman for Epica. Putting Simone and Floor together is pure genius.

you are awesome. i would love to see your take on Unleash the Archers. Their lead singer Brittney Slayes is amazing, such range and power, you would love them. Check out Awakening, Tonight We Ride, Cleanse the Bloodlines, General of the Dark Army, really you cant go wrong with any of their stuff.
