Hello Matt, Quick question. I have noticed most of your horses look to be in the 14.2 to 15.2 hand range. ( I don't know how tall you are so this is my guess.) What size horse do you like for a Reiner? A more short and short coupled horse or a taller and long coupled horse? I would love to see a video on what you look for in your horses.

Hey Matt, you know maybe this might be a good forum to discuss price. I mean what to expect for a Reiner or Ranch, low end / high end. I think maybe some people might not realize what the numbers really are.
@candiblevins91853 жыл бұрын
@Christy B Yes!! I agree. I’m currently in the market for a nice horse, and have the funds to get one, but I have no idea what a horse from Matt would run. I have a general idea of what a good reining horse would cost, but I’m sure one that has Matt’s name on it would probably go for more. My family has owned horses for generations, including myself, but I still have never understood the “private treaty” stuff. Like, if you intend to sell one, why is the price of the horse something secret? Lol As you said, I think, at least, a price range could be provided just to let people know if they should bother reaching out or not, depending on what they have to spend.
@christyb75903 жыл бұрын
@@candiblevins9185 I honestly don't know much about the western side of things. In my experience, hunter jumper world, I have bought from 2k to 30k and sold at low 6 figures. My husband would like to get into Ranch riding so I have been looking that up and was very interested when Matt commented on the sport.
@candiblevins91853 жыл бұрын
@@christyb7590 I don’t know much about the English world, so I can totally understand where you’re coming from on that. Do people post the prices of the horses in those sports, or are they marked “private treaty” as well, if they are generally considered “high priced?” That’s one of the more frustrating things about buying a nice horse….having to reach out to several people every time you find one you may be interested in just to find out the price. 28k is the most I’ve spent, so it makes me wonder what that would, or would not, buy out of his barn. Someone like Matt I can understand going private, as I’m sure he gets a deluge of private messages daily, but you would think adding in a price range would be beneficial to help those that don’t have the money to spend know that they are out of their price range. My 28k may not even buy a leg off of one of his horses! Lol I think your idea is a good one. For him to address what to expect with the caliber of horses he has, along with what to expect from someone not quite as high profile.
@christyb75903 жыл бұрын
@@candiblevins9185 I can understand why he does not list price. On this type of social media it would be a disaster. He'd get a million questions from minors. I have listed horses under 40k on certain sites with the price actually listed. The rest are listed like, high five figures, low/med six figures. On the western side I can see a huge price difference not only about skill but breeding. I looked at a ranch riding prospect recently from a known guy out of Ocala Fl . That horse was pretty much ready to go for an amateur, listed at 35k. So I don't know, maybe Matt will feel comfortable to throw some price ranges out for us. I love this channel. He is so good with the horses. He is, what we old timers call, a true horseman.

I do the all around, including horsemanship (which I know you did as a kid), and the reiners do the highest level difficulty of the haunch turn maneuver. So do you have any tips for getting a sharper, quicker, more efficient haunch turn? I do 4-H horse program and my horse is getting very old (he's going to be 26 April I can only walk and trot him due to him having navicular problems) so I have been looking around but not ready to buy a new horse yet.... would a reining horse be a good horse for smaller shows, trail riding and some ranch work? love your videos!
@juliagray2073 жыл бұрын
A reining horse could do all of those things. However, a well trained reining horse is expensive. Like 5-6 figures expensive. You could find an all around well trained trail horse that could do what you want, you don't need a reiner. THAT SAID, if you can find a retired reiner for less money who isn't competing anymore, might be perfect for you.

Just an observation, but from watching your video, of you riding Roscoe. Your breast collar seems to b chocking him n making him uncomfortable when his head is down. You might want to try a breast collar that forms a v in the center so it’s not tight on your horses neck, or no collar at all. Just want you to place good in your shows. Best wishes.
@groovychic3 жыл бұрын
Why are reiners trained to carry their head so low? - it looks so unnatural and uncomfortable. Horses in the wild or in pasture never move with their heads so low. NOT AN ATTACK on Matt or anyone else. just asking a question.
@mattmillsreining13 жыл бұрын
Great question that I answer often! Did you see my horse Bruce bridleless? Many of our reining horses are bred to have “ level “ top lines which naturally sets them up to be low with their heads. Horses in the wild have their heads up because they are on alert. And my horses in pasture all have their heads low to eat!! These horses are so comfortable with their training that they feel at ease dropping their heads to their natural position. Yes there are exceptions…. But isn’t that with everything in life??? Respectfully, Matt
