Uh oh. I didn't know what CPS systems are... I mean I played a lot of Capcom arcade games...but never really paid attention to arcade boards that much. Also never seen them listed in an emulator before like this (usually arcade games are under MAME). Next time I'll google it before guessing what they are. 👍

N64 has always been a harder system to emulate than PS1. This is running regular Emulation Station & RetroArch. So the company can take no credit for the user interface (other than installing it on their hardware lol). Emulation powerwise it seems to be about the same capability as a Raspberry Pi 3b.

It doesn't help that there isn't any good N64 emulators. The best ones are a joke when you take emulation accuracy into account, compare that to Duckstation and it's not even close. Project 64 is probably the best and it's been hijacked to spam people with nagware that makes you wait 30 seconds to use it, combine that with games being unstable and if you're trying to play anything like Resident Evil 2 you're going to spend half your time staring at a beg screen. N64 emulation is in the toilet, you're better off using an everdrive lol

@RetroDakota
@RetroDakota Жыл бұрын
EmuElec is actually a free open-source Linux OS that anyone can download and use to set up their own emulation PCs, but it also gets used by these Chinese companies to install on all these clone consoles. It uses RetroArch/libretro as the emulation backend. EmuElec contains a hotkey combination (such as pressing in both of the analog sticks) which will bring up an advanced settings menu whenever a game is being run. This is where you can fiddle around with all sorts of advanced settings like frame skip, output resolution, audio sample rate, and more. This can improve performance with N64 games, but it also comes down to what choice of emulator the game runs with. By pressing Select in the game menu and selecting "Advanced Game Options", you can choose a different emulator to run a certain game on provided there is one included. Based on my experience with a Super Console X Pro which has nearly the same hardware specs, the S905X chip is just too slow to handle N64 emulation with any emulator I tried. The way the FTP function works is to use another computer on your network to directly connect to the clone console using the file manager. It requires knowing what IP address your router has assigned the clone console. I used my Eero phone app to find the IP of the Super Console X and was able to fix a configuration file that got messed up. I assume this is also how you can add in your own ROMs.
@olabergs

Looks like another cheap android box running a version of EmuELEC. These devices are a dime a dozen and not too difficult to make yourself for $20-$30. They emulate 8bit and 16bit eras pretty good as well as some early handheld consoles, but struggle with 32bit, 64bit, and beyond as you would expect. Yeah the price is a little high but I guess you're paying for their build and collection of games. These Chinese boxes are really for people who don't have the time or the no-how to make their own. In those cases, they kinda make sense. Not for me tho. The nVidia Shield Pro is still one of the best options for an android box + gaming emulator, in my opinion. You gotta install all the software yourself, but there are many videos on KZbin to help. Great video. Great review MJR. At least anyone who might want to buy now knows what they're getting into. You have a lot of different things to analyze about this type of devices, and in USA you may find them a little odd, but in other countries, where you can't afford to buy a lot of software or prime hardware, they are common. 1) In reality the majority are repurposed TV boxes as retro consoles. They use dated chips sometimes recycled from other uses. 2) The base gaming system is "Emuelec" (not the TV part that is a tuned Android), an excellent project based on the likes of RetroArch, that has nothing to do with this companies directly. The chinese companies use the project and tune it for their needs. The original project is intended to repurpose hardware that maybe e-waste otherwise, and convert it to a retro console. It doesn't have any of the shenanigans that they may add, and DOESN'T COME WITH ROMS. You add them based on your... "backups". It's free, even open source if I remember correctly, with a GitHub official page. The configuration, looks, etc... it's all totally customizable. 3) The price is for your market and it is high. In other countries you can buy a cheap equivalent TV box without the form factor, that comes with SD support as media, or USB connections for other types. So, one thing is the hardware, that was intended as a TV box or media center for TVs or displays that don't have SMART capabilities, and it is based on sort of "recycled" chips. The TV part firmware is a "shady Android", common in this TV boxes. The gaming system boots aside, and is based on Emuelec, an independent project that is open, so the companies use it and change it, but it's not FROM them. And the original project is totally open, free, and fan supported. EDIT: The majority only go up to 16 bits era correctly. More than that you need more powerful chips and RAM. And, again, the price is high compared to similar devices in other countries without the look as a Famicom.

These under-powered Chinese devices often add these higher end systems even though they aren't going to run well almost solely so they can advertise those systems when selling them. That can make the console appear to be in a higher league especially if you don't understand or have access to the specs. Pretty common thing to see these days unfortunately. I am a bit surprised you aren't more versed in emulation consoles haha. Then again if I had a massive physical hardware collection I would probably be in the same boat. Cheers bro.

For some reason these tiny single board computers just dont like n64. the rpi 4 is much more capable though. For the money Hyper Base wants for this, I'd just buy a rpi4 and make my own.

Important to note that they are using the operating system without permission. Emuelec (I'm involved with it in that I am the designer of the default theme) and emuelec is strictly not for commercial distribution Nice to know that the hours and hours Devs put in free of charge is being sold to benefit others. Final note. To anyone buying this device, if you have any issues with emuelec on this system you will not get support from the emuelec team. This device is not supported.

I have a KinHank Super Console X that John Hancock reviewed a while back and generally I'm pleased with it. It seems about the same spec (as the CPU is the same, iirc) and runs the same Emuelec and Retroarch frontend. The same knock off PS3 controllers are also included - but the main difference is the price - £40 or less on AliExpress. Quite a difference from the price given here. I wouldn't be surprised if the performance on mine is slightly better than this as it uses microSD cards rather than a mechanical drive. All in all you can get far better or rather the same for much less.

The interface is default EmuElec, a very popular front-end for emulators in the emulation boxes world. It's free and open source, so they didn't really have do anything about it except flashing it onto the hard drive and maybe choosing a theme and a few options. EmuElec usually comes with CPS 1, 2 and 3 and the Pokémon mini, they're standard. Sooo well, it seems to me the only impressive thing about this machine is some piece of software that is available everywhere else. :/

From the way it's acting with the laggy/bad 3D games is that the CPU is shared for Graphics/Sound/Physics and what you're hearing is basically the interrupts for graphics updates interfering with its ability to play sound. If they had placed a dedicated Graphics chip on there it may have fixed the issues. These are the same issues I experienced in the early 2000s trying to emulate PS1/N64 on old Pentium machines. Even though the software was fine the graphics were terrible and there were tons of audio issues.

There's one reason I could think of why the HDD solution was chosen: You're not gonna transfer 50k+ games (or however many there really are) over USB 2.0, you'd _need_ to use a SATA dock (or one of these stand-alone "drive-duplicator" things) to get to a viable throughput of devices in manufacturing. SATA hard drives ain't the fastest around anymore, but if you're a chinese knock-off manufacturer it's leagues ahead of cheap USB connections or low quality SD cards. Also, I honestly dig the look, with how storage media have evolved over the past few years and games taking up more than a bluray's worth of data to ship physically, I wouldn't be surprised if we went back to cheap quasi-cartridges like that in the coming console generations.

For the price of that you can get a Retro Handheld which you can play old games on the go with. Also CPS was Capcom Arcade Board they used in the 90s with CPS1 game being things like Street Fighter 2, CPS2 being Super Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter Alpha, CP3 being used for Street Fighter 3. By then Capcom switched from developing their own hardware and simply moved to using Arcade Boards from other companies like SEGA Naomi board which was basically a SEGA Dreamcast. The more famous Arcade System was the Neo Geo MVS which was the same hardware as the Neo Geo AES but the MVS was an arcade board while the AES was a home console.

I'm honestly shocked that a guy who's been into video games as long as Metal Jesus has never heard of CPS1-3. The distinction was a huge deal in the early 2000's when arcade game emulation was in its infancy. It was big news when the first emulators capable of CPS3 emulation came out.

Capcom eventually switched to for their arcade games), And the short lived Triforce arcade hardware used for things like F-Zero AX (Arcade version of F-Zero GX)

Some of those emulator consoles are significantly cheaper on AliExpress if you don't mind waiting around two to four weeks for shipping. I have the Game Console X Cube. I got it for around 50 dollars on AliExpress. I noticed it was over $75.99 on the Amazon listing that was shown in the video. I like it. The 50,000 or 70,000 plus games is deceptive. Because many of the games are rom hacks, demos or different language or region versions of a game. Especially on the 16 bit and earlier systems. If a game has more than one disc then those discs also count as separate games.

The highest portion of the total price is for the laptop HDD. Dual system means that it can also work as android based mediabox/tv-box. What these Chinese manufacturers do is purchasing lots of old SOC stock and put it in there emulator consoles. For me it looks the same as an external HDD/SSD station to connect trough USB to your computer.

The "operating system" looks suspiciously like RetroPie to me. RetroPie is software for the Raspberry Pi that'll emulate a lot of classic gaming systems. Depending on the power of the Pi you bought, emulating anything beyond the PSX is an added bonus. BTW I think you're not allowed to ask money for RetroPie. But then again, you're not allowed to redistribute games without a licence either. And they're doing that also. ;)

A used Dell mini PC can be had for about $40-60 and a 500GB external hard drive can be had for about $20, leaving about $40 left for a controller. Given the choice between a low end x86 PC and an EOL Amlogic chipset for the same money, go with a low end PC for better software support.
