Great review of the options! I sprung for the 5 CD set as a Christmas gift for my George Harrison superfan brother. Of course he doesn't have a surround sound system for the Blu Ray disc but the scrapbook, the poster, and all the outtakes made it worth it to me. And since it's Christmas I figured why not spend a little extra. It's a special gift.

I am a die hard fan of George Harrison and I can tell you I have the original LP and the 2001 CD realise but I will only be getting the three CD version, I personally don't like remixes only preferring the way George wanted it, love to all George fans I sure do miss that beautiful smile. ❤️

I don't think he would of been offended if it sounds improved the danger is to over work them he left instructions that after he died every so now and again songs should be released that were left off albums but things had to be affordable, so that is why there are the cheaper versions of this album, not sure why the very expensive one!

Depends on the quality of your sound system. If you have a decent stereo, the remaster would probably be a big improvement from the 70s vinyl.

I came close to putting the 8-LP set in my cart, but chickened out when I saw a reviewer who had 3 of the 8 LPs arrive badly warped. Still tempted by the 5 LP version but when I saw that the 3-CD set was less than 1/3 the price with the same songs, that seemed like the place to start. I ordered it at $23.75. The 8-LP version will stay on my wish list. I do have a nice used copy of the LP on Capitol records. Obviously not an original pressing but pre-barcode, pre-CD, and pre-remix.

Personally I prefer the 30th anniversary remaster that was partly remixed and overseen by Harrison himself. The 50th anniversary remix is stripped of Spector's reverb. In addition Harrison's voice and the bass/drums feature much more prominently on expense of the clarity/dynamics IMHO. But I consider buying the 3 cd set for the bonus disc with outtakes.

In spite of Spector's reverb/wall of sound you could still tell how many musicians were present on each track. I'm a bit of a Hi-Fi nerd myself but I guess the new mix will sound acceptable on tiny bass light speakers.

Thanks, your video kind of forced me to think of the realities a what I'm getting as a consumer. The George Harrison fan in me doesn't always think of the financial breakdown. The fan in me didn't appreciate this video, the grown up in me appreciates how you broke this all down. I've been wrestling with myself as to which said I should get I think I'm going to get the 5 disc 1 Blu-ray Edition for now. With the possibility a buying that eight vinyl addition down the road. Maybe if the 5CD set came with nice packaging and book like John Lennon's recent Plastic Ono Band, that would have made it worth the investment. Darren

I love this album so much and I'm a musician because of George, but even if money was just an object for me, I don't know if I could justify dropping a grand on a vinyl box set. I already have the original album so I'll see what I end up getting, and whatever it is I can guarantee it'll be one that has that poster because mine didn't have one. I could also justify buying Wildflowers because it wasn't something I already had the original album of.

I have both the original on CD in a UK release, and the 2001 version on CD that Harrison remixed. The original has the classic sound that we older folks are used to, and there is something to be said for hearing the songs the way we remember them (my best friend from HS bought the LP in the early 70's and we listened to it alot). Having said that, there are several problems with the original, one being the overly heavy Specter mix of multiple instruments buried in reverb, two being the lack of care at getting all the tracks to play are relatively the same volume (a mastering issue) so that some tracks are much louder than others, three being Harrison's voice is a bit thin and so has a hard time competing with all the instruments in Specter's wall of sound mix, also the guitars weren't eq'd to allow his voice to dominate in the upper region, and his voice was simply not mixed loud enough, and then lack of sufficient compression on his vocal allows it to drift in and out of the mix, all those vocal issues (and too much reverb on his vocal according to Harrison) detract from the original recording, and Harrison fixes all of these in his 2001 remix. If you are not familiar with this recording, then forget the original and get his 2001 remix and get used to that, it is the original tapes just remixed and reprocessed to a new master, it's not the same as the original, but it is a far superior mix, plus it's cleaner and a bit brighter, the original recording is for me a good example of low fidelity in early recordings, esp Wah-Wah, and whereas the original recording required multiple tape generations to attain a mix, Harrison was able to put them altogether on a digital system which greatly reduced tape generational loss.

I'm a HUGE fan of the LP and think it's way up there with the "White Album" & "Abby Road" which I own the Deluxe editions of (still waiting for "Let It Be"). I chose the 5-LP vinyl-version which I think will be more than sufficient. Although the 8-LP edition would've been preferable, basically (let's be honest here), If you are a serious fan, you are just seizing the opportunity here to get a more definitive version of what you had on Bootleg for a number of years now. This goes for all the previous albums as well.

Maybe times are hard for the Harrison family, but this is just classless. I am 66 and was always frustrated with the Greatest Hits released by different bands and artists where they would add a live track or unreleased song .Years ago this was a big deal. I was one of those who has bought all of your records so that you have greatest hits. How do you treat your public, force us to pay for them again for that one rarity. I am big fan of this record, I have the original vinyl from when it was released. I also bought the deluxe 30th anniversary. No more for me. FYI the wooden book mark is from a tree from the estate of Friar Park. Vary cosmic to be chopping down trees to sell more stuff.
