Do you typically run a dehumidifier to dry your basements up as much as possible?

Fix the problem. I own a brick and stone house from 1899. My basement always smelled damp and the ground was always damp but never any standing water. My roof was bad and I had no gutters. Just replacing the roof allowed my bricks and stone to dry. My basement lost the damp smell as well.
