BUYING A $200 Cadillac Allante *The Ultimate 90s Luxury 2 Seater*

I paid $200 for this 1991 Cadillac Allante and I think we had $200 worth of fun with it on the first drive. The Cadillac Allante was jam packed with technology and way ahead of its time, there are no knobs and tons of screens. Now 30 years later every new car is basically all screens with a volume knob. This car truly was futuristic, well designed, and it came with a price tag to match. The 4.5L V8 engine and 4 speed transmission are still putting in work, but the rest of the car is hanging on by a thread. When you buy a $200 example you know what you're getting into, I planned on quickly fixing the exhaust leak and selling it, but realized I should sell it as is after spending a few minutes in the car.

Cadillac guaranteed original owners that their car would hold a value equal to the MB SL class for three years. The owners traded them in just before the deal ended keys for keys for brand new Cadillacs.

According to a very comprehensive article in Automobile magazine, Sept. 1986, the Allante was shipped *twice* across the Atlantic in 747s. GM-30 platforms were sent to Pininfarina who cut them down and welded them back together in a smaller two seat configuration, put the body on and interior in, and painted them. Then back to Hamtramck in the specially converted 747s (three of them) where GM installed the powertrain, suspension, brakes, etc. Truly nutty. Really too bad you couldn't save this one, I always liked this car.

They did this kind of thing with Oldsmobile too. 90-95 Cutlass convertibles, coupe partially built, shipped locally to have top cut off and reinforcements put in. Back to factory for paint and interior, back to chop shop for convertible top etc, then back to factory. Of course this was much smaller scale than the 747s but same idea lol.

I've owned a 93 Pearl Red / Natural Beige interior for 13 years and have had very little trouble with it meaning just normal maintenance. We came back from the Allante Nationals up in Grand Rapids in August with 95- 100 degrees heat 🔥 performed flawlessly. Change the oil 🛢 and brake fluid as scheduled in the 93 and they'll run on.

I test drove a new Allante when they came out. Salesman let me take it out by myself. I pulled over to put the top up or down, I forget which. Anyway, I broke it. Returned it to the dealer and said not a word! Bought a Q45 instead.

My FIL worked for 30 years at Fisher Body in the Lansing, MI area, retired in the late 90’s, then moved to TN and then to SC. We can get GM employee discount on new cars as long as he’s still alive. Not sure if that will get rid of the ridiculous dealer mark-ups of the past two years, but I may have to figure that out soon.

Couple of things if anyone cares. The 4.5 was technically a precursor to the Northstar, but way more reliable. Started out as a TBI engine with 155 HP, then switch to a more common Multiport injection( One injector per cylinder) which boosted HP to 180. But the Allante had a model specific intake which bumped up power to 200. They also had a 4.1 which is not anywhere as good as the 4.5. And they also had a 4.9L as well, which is also a pretty good engine. All Cadillacs around this time period from about 85- 93ish had the mechanical dinger. I believe the blend doors run off of vaccum. Which is why you didn't hear anything. (Thats at least how they work in my Deville from this time period) A common fail point on GM cars from this time period. The fan controller/ resistor pack would fail, causing the fan to stay on all the time, not to turn on at all, or just odd behavior from the blower. Or the fan could also be dead.

In 2000, the Northstar headbolts we're lengthened an successfully made the headbolt failure issue less common. In 2004, they completely redesigned the headbolts, finally making the Northstar reliable. Besides the hedbolt issue, they are actually excellent engines. Why it took gm so long to do it, we will never know. They absolutely tarnished Cadillac reputation and cost them a huge amount of customers.

I owned an Allante.. I'd pestered the owner for 15 yrs to buy it.. the owner looked after it but, after 15yrs it was tired. I loved the car but after 4yrs of ownership it became the moneypit i couldn't keep up with.. Power steering went out, ABS went out and the final straw was the air conditioning exploding.. Great Memories ..

I've worked on some of those old caddies back when they were young. I specifically remember cursing out the 4.1 liter V8. The cars were difficult to work on, everything had to be perfect, there was always some boobie trap or O-ring that was difficult to get right. My arms would get cut up and pieces were mostly aluminum, easy to break and very expensive. Sorry JR, that car is an absolute piece of crap after 60 -90 thousand miles, But..... But, I will admit, those cars are a pleasure to drive when they are good. They feel good, they are very luxurious, they have power to move. Too bad those cars are meant for the first buyer. Anyone who buys it used is guaranteed to have nightmares. I would never, ever, ever buy a used one.

I too worked on these cars at Casa De Cadillac in Sherman Oaks Ca. We had the factory rep trying to help get the cars right and we never could. I had fun driving it though . The soft tops always leaked air and water no matter what.

I owned 2 Allante's A white 91 and then a flax (very odd light yellow) 93. I daily drive both of them well over 100k miles with very few issues. The 91 is still one of my favorite cars from the many different brands and models I have owned. Kind of been thinking of trying to find a low miles excellent condition one and been looking around a little. They were cars you need to stay on top of and do regular maintenance, if you didn't this example is what would happen.

I like old cadillac's, had a 1962 cadillac hearse for a couple year's, until my mom kept hounding me to sell it. That car was a head turner with a big ole 390 engine pulling the insane weight of the car. Back in 2001, I would meet my mom and grandma for lunch once a week at bill knapp's (long gone), and my grandma had been a english lit teacher up until 1981 when she retired, and when I told her and my mom that I got the hearse finished, and it was in the lot, my grandma was walking fast to come look at it, but mom, not to happy. No one thought I would get her running, because I got it with 2 motors, a replacement transmission, and a lot of parts. I had to get a regular cady driveshaft lengthened, replaced all fuel and brake line's, clean the gas tank, and a lot of other stuff, but the body had no rust. My grandpa died before I could finish it, but he knew I would have it running. I finally sold it after my mom kept hounding me, and got my step dad to sell me his garage kept 66 impala ss convertible that needed restoring. The hearse was always my favorite, I just don't like northstar engine's, and some of the earlier cadillac engine's weren't that great. Good 200$ lol.

That depreciation is insane! I bought a good running 1992 acura leagend (just needed a new ignition column) a couple years ago for $1300. They sold for about 40k brand new in the early 90s so thats almost $90k today. Been Daily driving it the past two years no issues, 5 speed manual with cruise control!, power adjustable driver seat perfectly working sun roof, definitely still feels pretty luxurious for being 30 years old and has a timeless body design :)

I think the 2005 Chrysler 300C was beautiful (the V6 versions less so), and the 2008 Dodge Challenger could certainly be added. The last generation Chevy Impala to me is very attractively sculpted also even as mundane as it ultimately is (although V6 versions are surprisingly peppy).

Dude I remember these rare gems! Coming from a small town and rural areas they were so rare!!! I'm here was only like 1 or 2 snotty rich Drs that bought such rediculous things.....they looked so cool but we're obviously as you've shown absolutely rediculous to work on or maintain and we're NOT meant to daily drive and is set up like an old super car to be stored in a warm climate in a climate controlled garage and only driven in perfect weather and perfect conditions....parts are rediculous to find and even if you can find ....gotta take out 3 home equity loans and sell a kidney to pay for them....we now know why you got it for so dam cheap......sell for parts and rid yourself of this nightmare or if body and frame are solid put an LS in it and make and get rid of soft top and make a nice weather car that has no top at all.....

Cadillac Allante, built on the world's longest assembly line. Started in Italy and ended in Detroit. I remember seeing the 747's GM used to transport the car body's at the airport.

Fun fact about the line that Cadillac chassis was built on. The Ferrari 250/275 ran on that line, then the Fiat 124 sport Spider for almost 20 years. It was the contract for this Allante that ended the production of the Spider (which Pinninfarina actually built and sold as the Pinninfarina Spider for about 3 years.) So that car’s grandpa/ma is a Ferrari 275.

I drove a black 91 Allante for 5 years, looked amazing with the top down but was waaay over done with all of the futuristic ‘tech’ that seemed to fail at a new spot every week. If they would have kept it analog and RWD, this thing would be a classic. This may be a candidate for an EV swap 😀

I worked for Air Cargo Equipment 84-90 we had a plastic mockup of the Allante (looked like a mustang) top secret project! We made a Skid so the bodies could be 747 aircraft shipped from Europe. Kinda cool.

There are 3 excellent restoration experts and probably many more less known ones for the Allante'. Dick Hussy, West Palm Bch Florida, John Monzo, NJ and Tom Rohner, California. All parts are availiable. All problems can be fixed/sorted out. GM lost over a million dollars on each of the 21,430 Allante's built. I LOVE them and have had my first two problems sorted out and driven each a few times from Ontario, Canada to Florida. I'm on my 3rd and found they have held their values. I think the design is most excellent.

Check your VIN, is it a VS or a VR? The just common failure for the Bosch brake systems was the relay in the fuse bank.

Now now, don’t disrespect the Allante! I just bought a 1989. It sat out in the country outside for 6 years. There was a problem with the digital dash. Dick at Allante source told me what the problem was. I ordered the part from him for $125, put in and it all works great? Still cleaning it up a bit. Had some wires damaged from mice. I think it was a garage queen all it life prior to being put outside. It’s in really good shape. It has 62,000 miles. I paid $1,200. It’s a fun car and fast. He probably could have made a fortune parting it out. Everyone that owns one needs something sooner or later.

Early Allante's didn't come in that many colors but they sounded great. To bad that one didn't age well. I was always tempted to buy one but my interest moved to trucks.

I do believe this was GM's answer to the LeBaron, I seen one and compared it with an Allante, the two share some similarities. Beautiful, classy, and stylish car, a real shame it didn't live up to its full potential.
