What gave it away for me was when you said the engine was a favourite with hot rodders. I did guess right but imagined it would be black ⚫. It does look lovely in pale green and a good choice in my books 👍

I thought exactly the same after it became clear it wasn't Zephyr/Zodiac as I had at first surmised. I too was expecting it to be black. Great video. I worked in a dismantling yard in the mid-70s. In one corner of the site was a decommissioned aircraft fueller which had a V8 Pilot engine and front-end. We used it to store red diesel fuel for the yard plant. This car looks like a good choice that will enhance your credibility at car shows - not just reporting but participating.

Great build-up of anticipation in the vid! The Pilot is a superb choice, l think; always fancied one, as l grew up in the 50s/60s, when they were seen relatively often on the road. I run an Allard 2-seater which sports a rebuilt Bren-carrier 3.6 flathead - recognisable by the Ford factory colour of duck-egg blue/green. I'm looking forward to seeing how you settle into Ford flathead ownership.👍🏼

My dad brought one of these home on trial in the mid 1950s but it wouldnt fit in the garage and my mother hated it so no deal. He eventually bought a new Standard Vanguard phase 11.

I'm not particularly a Ford person, or really any one-make person, I just cherry-pick certain cars from various manufacturers if I happen to like them. A Jaguar was very high up on the shortlist but I don't think I'd have found a good one of the models I like at my budget so I looked elsewhere.

Completly forgot about the Pilot. My father bought one in 1959, only for it to be totalled a day before delivery by a Pickfords lorry. Subsequently a Mk1 Consul arrived from the dealer the following week, and i remember the joy on his face being replaced by utter frustration as it would not pull the skin off a rice pudding. It lasted 4 months and so began his love affair with Fords 6 cylinder cars from Zephyr to Zodiac for a few years. Good choice.

Yes, that was my guess. Being American, I was set off to Ford from the familiar specifications when the engine was described; I had only to ascertain which model came with the long-lived flathead V-8. When I saw the Pilot, it struck me as having the quintessential lingering prewar design characteristics that would ring all the bells for our esteemed presenter.

I have driven one as we got them in NZ along with US v8's. I actually currently own it's American cousin, a 1948 Ford club coupe and have previously owned a 46 business coupe. I love them and you will love that Pilot. I do like that green. Looking forward to seeing the detailed look around on OCC..... nothing beats the distinctive sound of a flathead V8 and the Pilot to boot has factory dual exhausts so it sounds twice as good. I'm almost as excited as you are.

I first became aware of the V8 Pilot as a teenager in the 60s. The friend of a friend had one and I was truly knocked out when I had my first ride. We don't see enough of them at classic car rallies.

Your first four or five clues pointed to a Ford V8 Pilot, and what a beautiful looking car it is. The headmaster at my primary school in 1952 had a 1936 American Ford V8 which looked very similar, but of course the bodies are quite different. As for the cars you rejected, I always liked Sunbeam Talbots, and although I've never owned a Rootes Group car I have always admired them. I hope the Pilot gives you countless hours of pleasure and trouble-free motoring.

My father had one of these when I was a kid, in the 1960"s a station wagon, not a woody, with 7 seats. His was black and it was a wonderful machine, We had a large family, 5 boys Mom and Dad and it was ideal., we all we able to ride in it very comfortably. Good decision RJ.

Nice, it looks good. With such pre-war styling, you can see why it didn't sell all that well but they are certainly interesting and attractive. A bit of an overlooked classic I think. They were sold in Australia and my father talked about them but they were out of date by they time they were released. Now it's over 70 years later and that criticism doesn't seem so relevant. It should sound very nice. 😊

Yes I think they are largely a forgotten car given that they disappeared from new-car dealerships way back in 1951. Thinking about it, Ford soldiered on with the Pop 103E until the late 1950s and that too had its roots back in the 1930s. Thanks for watching.

Always liked the look of the v8 pilots ,but after many years of messing with classic cars & bikes I have had no real dealings with them ,perhaps a little too exotic ?. The whole family love old vehicles ,I still tinker a little here in Sheffield where we once had a repair garage ,but now just do old motorcycles at 74 y.o. ,but my younger brother [62 y.o.] in Blackpool still has his workshop at the rear of his house & a large sprayshop in town for cars /vans .I have a old M.G. & a P6 Rover and try my best to keep them mobile ,but the Rover is getting a little harder when it comes to spares ?. So I was surprised when you mentioned the spares problem in your speech ,then bought a old Pilot , surely the spares for that cannot be easy to get ?. A lot on these pages seem to prefer more modern sports cars or expensive saloons ,but it makes a change to here from a lover of the older cars . - Cheers ! .

Hi, thanks for watching, re the spares, well all the unique-to-Pilot bits are there so hopefully spares-wise it'll just be service items and such like, and given that so many V8s were produced they should be reasonably plentiful. There are at least 2 suppliers here in the UK for oily bits, so I don't foresee too many problems - certainly compared to vehicles I've owned before at any rate! Thanks for following the channel.

Here’s a real piece of anorak information for you Rick. I believe there’s a 2012 reprint of an older Biggles book entitled “Biggles Sees Too Much” in which the dust jacket features a lovely illustration of a V8 Pilot. Presumably, Biggles drove one in this particular adventure, so perhaps that’s something you could look out for.

40 years ago I bid on one in a estate sale. It looked fantastic on the passenger side.I won the tender and ($600NZD) and went to collect it. I was met by a family in mourning who were upset the car sold so cheaply. But when I walked to the drivers side,the right front 1/4 was bashed in after a front end collision .Apparently someone had test driven it while the tender process was underway and drove into a power pole. I turned it down and went way without it. The Pilot is a very odd car being a prewar design ,and almost post WW1 in terms of engineering design with the brakes etc .

The Bren Gun engine had shell indium bearings for military use and thus post war spare engines were in high demand for cars like the Allard which was in fact successful in the Monte in the P 1 version. A Pilot was beaten by my father in a Vauxhall 25 after he had been hit by it by a drunken dealer. He had to force it off the road which must have been exciting as he had to turn around first! The impact badly damaged the Vauxhall suspension which was oleo operated. The V8 engine of the Pilot came in two capacities 22 and 30 hp. The 3.6 version was the 30 hp. When fitted to the M type Allard the spark plug of the cylinder behind the gear change control required removal of part of it for servicing.

Yup I did wonder, though many others crossed my mind. When I was a nipper, I date from 1950 too, I must admit I never liked the look of them but just recently I have looked at them afresh and they must have offered good value for the money. In fact a few feet from where I'm typing this I have a black 1.43rd scale Dinky version! I'm looking forward to seeing more of this beauty. Nice colour and it looks immaculate.

many years ago a friend had a ford v8 flat ex army truck how ever much he fiddled with it he never seamed to have running on all 8 cylinders , could be i suppose as it had 2 tanks and when warm he used to switch to the tank containing T V O , the old adage you are never late in a v 8 comes to mind

I would have liked any of your considered cars , especially an earlier Sunbeam-Talbot 90 Mk1 , which we owned and have many happy memories of driving , but towards the end of your analysis , guessed what it would be at 22.18 and thoroughly approve - a lovely old girl, with Art-Deco stying and in the perfect in period colour !.

As soon as you said thay put the engines in bren carriers. I new it was a pilot. Ive owned three in the past. Ive not long sold one.good luck with it. 50 mph ,faster than that. The engine needs another gear.

From Brian Sewell's description I would guess a Ford Pilot. If so, then you have chosen a lovely car, but my list of other marques for consideration would have included: Standard Vanguard of any phase, Ford Consul/Zypher/Zodiac of any Mk and also Austin A55 Cambridge... although these might not meet your "pre-war" looks !

Hi 👋 My father bought a black 1948 Wolseley 14 /6 model in the 1970s. It was in quite good condition. It had fog lamps in the front. The front windscreen had a winder on it to let in air , so it could be opened. The interior was a bit rough. I liked going out with dad in it. It certainly turned heads. Apparently i found out that in Britain the police used them. You probably know the model i mean. My father didn't have it long. He sold it to a guy at his work place.

The Pilot V-8 is smaller capacity than the US Ford/Mercury Flathead V-8's., but there's no reason why you can't fit a US version in the Pilot , or for that matter one of the Ford-France Flathead V-8s used in the post-war Hotchkiss version of the Willys Jeep for the French Army which takes most of the 'hot-rod' bits for the US engines, it's only principle difference, from memory, being it's bell-housing bolt pattern.

@@terryjacob8169 You are thinking of the V8 60 engine the the prewar English Model 62 V8 had. Although some very early Pilots had this motor (very rare and gutless), the majority had the 85hp V8 that as used in US Fords from 1937 to 1942. English cast ones have engine parts that are interchangable with US stuff. But Lucas electrics, starter, generator ( dynamo to the English) and Solex carb are peculiar to the Pilot. You are right you could interchange a US 100hp Merc engine or a French flathead with little work. Another good conversion is full juice brakes from a 39 US Ford, doing away with the half and half juice/cable set up on the Pilot.

It's had most parts replaced as necessary already fortunately, there's a good owners club, popular Facebook group and a choice of parts suppliers for the V8 stuff here in the UK, so it's better than many cars I think

It seems to be in excellent ‘nick’, and looks especially superb in that pleasing shade of pale green. I correctly guessed the ‘mystery’ car quite early in the piece - albeit with a bit of ‘cheating’ in Wikipedia! Your ‘giveaway’ clue was the engine that powered British staff cars and Bren Gun carriers in WW2. So I Googled it. That led to follow-ups of the other clues you ‘dropped’, leaving in me no doubt as to the identity of the car you were about to reveal. Not exactly rocket science on my part, but thank you for giving me the ‘thrill of the search’! May the Ford V8 Pilot give you - and Harley - many happy hours of ‘Old Classic Car’ motoring. Enjoy!

Beautiful. My great uncle had one from new (in the beige) until 1968 when he traded it on a Mazda 1500 SS saloon. I remember, as a child playing in the Pilot and sliding down the guards. Loved the blind on the back window. This was in Australia.

Hooray I got it right as soon as you mentioned " hot rod" I said to myself Ford Pilot. Well done, great choice. I nearly bought one in 1976 for £395 but was a bit slow so I got an S type Jag instead. I regretted it later though as the clutch went.

Hi Rick. Naturally I twigged fairly early on...but then it wasn't that difficult with the clues. I am certain of one thing; you will be pleasantly impressed with the car. I remember when they were everywhere and it is sad so few survived. They are genuinely tough cars; in fact as a lad I worked for a garage owner (friend of my Dad) who was a National Stock Car champion. His weapon of choice back in the 60s was...you guessed it...a Ford Pilot. Shame so many went that way but that was so often the fate back then of cars that were really well built. In the day, my Dad was very fond of them... but he baulked at the thirst... Ray White.

At first I thought of the Standard Vanguard... but then, a Ford Pilot. Would have been my choice - great cars! Well done! I tried to get my Father to buy one in the 50s but the V8 and petrol consumption for every day use proved too much for him. He finally decided on a Jowett Javelin which was a lovely car.

Yes I think dailying a V8 flathead might be a costly exercise, but for occasional jaunts it doesn't much matter

Nice car ! I gotta say, that is a lot prettier than the Ford models here in the U.S. Congratulations ! If your V8 is the same basic engine as the flathead V8s used over here, you have a strong, nearly bulletproof engine. Be very careful to keep the radiator coolant full and don't let it over heat. Also, keep an eye on the oil level, DO NOT let it get low. If you do that, and change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, you will have a car that may well outlast you.

Sitting here in the US and talking 1950 Fords has me thinking "shoebox" styling not late 1930's looks. I suppose it gives you 50's performance with 30's styling, eh? Nice pick.

Local shop owner Harry Mathers had a black V8 pilot he was also a parish councillor.He had a loud speaker on the front and used to drive round asking for votes he was only small and wore a trilby which you could just see above the dashboard.Another story was he was nicknamed crutchy Mathers to avoid call up which said crutches disappeared after conscription

I didn't guess right. Was sure it was going to be a Standard Ensign and as runners up maybe a Triumph Renown or Armstrong Sidley Sapphire. Enjoyed the big build up and look forward to learning a bit about the V8 Pilot.

My granddad had a V8 pilot. It remains a family mystery how he obtained it. He was such a tight wad that he would never have bought it (his retirement car that he treated himself to was a brand new 1968 Morris Minor 2 door. ) We suspect that he won it in a game of cards with an army officer in the Newcastle under Lyme Conservative club! He drove it till the wheels dropped off then my uncle used it for stock car racing until it was scrapped.

Initially with your comment about a development of a pre-War design I thought it was going to be an RM Riley, but once you said side-valve and three-speed gearbox it could only be a Pilot!
