I have a Nikon D3500 purchased in 2019 because I wanted a real camera to take to Italy. It was a kit set with an 18-55mm and a 70-300mm. I've added 3 prime lenses; 35mm f1.8, 40mm f2.8 Micro and a 50mm f1.8 and it's perfect for my type of photography and I couldn't be happier. It might be a beginners DSLR but it serves my needs and I really love this camera. Mirrorless might be the real deal but the DSLR ain't dead yet.

Awesome camera but I prefer my cheaper D3. Bought it second hand from a local photographer for $300 USD. It works fabulous even by today’s standards. I’ve been out in the pouring rain, subzero temperatures and it keeps on clicking. The best used camera ever!

Bought that camera new at launch and kept it for 8 years. Went through two shutters! But once I got a Z7ii and used z glass I just couldn’t go back. The 50 1.2 is incredible and even the 1.8 glass is sharper and renders better then anything I’ve used on f mount.

i like dslr. I can follow each subject all day without worrying about whether the batteries will be empty and I can click whenever the moment is right. Controlling or regulating the amount of light is extremely simple. The function for whether we want darker or brighter photos is also extremely simple. Of course, I use a photo camera exclusively for photos and enjoy that one captured moment, film is an additional option for me. Megapixels are unimportant, at least for me, most cameras have enough megapixels for a good photo. Rich people buy mirrorless cameras and smart people prefer dslr.

I am with you on OVFs. I actually switched to Pentax from Fujifilm (though I still have 2 MILCs) for the reason that I want to support the continuation of OVFs. Same as Nikon, lenses are backwards compatible to the film cameras so I shoot with the same lenses on my film cameras. Back to OVFs, nothing can replace the experience of looking through the optical viewfinder and seeing the actual light as it passes through the lens... and not the sensor's interpretation of the light.

Bought a D810 this summer from KEH. Put a third party battery grip on it. Fraction of the price, fantastic performance no need for an 850 or a Z. I stick with MF & screw drive AF lenses too. Far higher optical quality than the crud being sold today for minimal cost. I don't do video. If I could I'd buy camera that don't have that garbage in them.

Thank you for the video. Me too, DSLR all the way. Not a big man like you however, my hands are not comfortable holding toy cameras. Hobbyist, Canon user using pro bodies. Own 5 of them including one flagship, bought used for 2,250 US dollars over the last 7 years. Sold out the mid-level bodies. Yes, I did spend good sums of money for native lenses over the last 15 years and now own 10 including 5 L series. Shoot landscape, street photos and wildlife. The EVF lag of mirrorless cameras is a massive obstacle for capturing fast action. Moreover, my eyes are not comfortable looking through it. So, mirrorless no chance in my arsenal. My present gears are more than enough for many years to come. But I do understand the objective of the deafening promotion of mirrorless cameras - manufacturers need sales. And new gimmicks augment sales. I have no problems with that. Thanks again.

Excellent, great video. Unfortunatelly, the nanufacturers refuse to see this true. I wonder when will find out how the EVF affects the eye. And yes, the OVF is beautiful to work with. I’m tired of the plastic image of the EVFs. I have to say that the pictures you took with Nikon D850 are amazing. The colors, the tones everything looks beautiful, natural

LOL I still use my D3100 that came with a kit bundle; a 18-55 and 55-200 lens and a CPL. Still shoot weddings with it and have made me enough money to purchase a D850 and a SB-700 flash, with a few extra lenses! Now the D3100 is my backup and still going strong. My equipment is there to pay my rent; until you convince me to dump SDLR's and splash out that level of financial commitment to mirrorless (because that new camera is your pay cheque), then I'll stick to what brings in the money.

I have spent days researching and watching videos, trying to decide if I wanted to give up my D500 for a Z8. This video clinched it for me. I spend hours with my camera doing bird and wildlife photography, strictly for my own enjoyment, and initially thought I'd love the eye tracking feature on the Z8 (which I might). But, I love the feel of my camera, I can operate it without thinking, I get beautiful shots, and my battery lasts all day. And I now know without a doubt I would hate the EVF. The few enhancements that I might use on a mirrorless are not worth the cost, or the learning curve. Thank you for this content!

I primarily shoot birds in flight and wildlife, with some pet photography in between. I tried the z72 and after being hugely frustrated and disappointed I went back to upgrading my D5 to a D6 and once again felt at home and at ease. Nothing from the mirrorless world, can replace/compete with the OVF and the battery life in a D6. Autofocus and tracking of the D6 is also at a level that it's hard to beat. In my genre of photography , DSLRs are indeed very much relevant, and will continue to be so for many more years to come, because the refinement in DSLRs took decades to achieve when fast action and erratic fast targets are concerned. But for slow / static shooting and video, there is no question that mirrorless is king. Therefore it all comes down to the right tool for the right job. Only prerequisite is of course money being no issue since in any Genre, the job can be done with far less with a DSLR than a mirrorless.

I still do semi pro work with a DSLR. I have not seen any reason yet to switch to mirrorless, on some work eye af and tracking would have made the job easier, but I still can manage with DSLR and just like you said the price for change would still be too much for what I would gain. I love the ovf and battery life, I can shoot a weekend of sports with almost 10000 pictures with just one battery. The weather sealing in DSLRs still seems to be superior over to any mirrorless cameras, I can trust my D850 to survive in any weather, sometimes I dream of switching to Sony or Leica, but I dont have the same trust on the weather sealing in those cameras.

I agree with you completely. I just bought myself a new Canon 90D DSLR for my 70th birthday. I’ve had SLRs and DSLRs since the mid 1970’s starting with the Olympus OM1. I still have an OM4. I love the OVF and the ergonomics of the 90D. Agreed the price of mirrorless cameras just too much. I got my 90D from Amazon Canada for 1414.00 CAD. I think an equivalent mirrorless would set me back 1.5 to 2 times what I paid for my 90D. I use it mainly for wildlife and birds in and around Toronto. I’m very happy with it. Greetings from Canada.

My mantra has always been "buy it used" Thanks to mirrorless there are a tremendous amount of deals on bodies and lenses out there. I know, as I seem unable to stop buying gear at a great price. As a retired business executive I have a slightly different view on mirrorless. To the camera and lens industry mirrorless is a life boat. The smart phone camera killed off the goose that laid the golden egg for the camera companies, the compact consumer camera. With the main source of revenue gone, the camera companies value took a nose dive. The only thing the big camera companies had left was there high end gear. So in comes mirrorless, and a chance to sell a whole new line of gear to pros who ware out gear fast and techno geeks who have to have the latest gadget. When dslr sales started to slip the big companies started the megapixel wars until it became clear that human eye, the end used so to speak, can only see so much. The sweet spot for MP seems to be 16 to 20 MP (the Nikon D500 and D5 have 20MP) As we all know the price of mirrorless bodies and lenses is through the roof, but that is what is keeping the camera companies alive. I used to despise the techno geeks and wealthy status seekers who had to have the latest gear, but not any more. I now take advantage of them by buying their old bodies and lenses for pennies on the dollar. I even was able to take advantage of the pandemic. So many studios went out of business that I was able to pick up a ton of studio lighting gear for pennies. For those of us who are smart, mirrorless is an opportunity to get some really great gear cheap.

Recently bought the D850 due to great price and it being such an iconic camera instead of the Z8. After thoroughly reviewing Mirrorless I think the advent, although in embryonic stages, of Global Shutter tech will have a seismic impact on the Mirrorless market. The typical characteristics of new technology mean this leapfrogging will continue to happen and there are plenty of ‘Early Adopters’ to fund the market. The trick is knowing when the tech reaches a stable phase.

I'm a little old fart and I still use an d850/d780 set. For what little video work I do (most youth sports analytics videos) the 780 is more than enough. For everything else I do, product, portraiture, rural "street", landscape the old slow d850 is perfect. Additionally, the spectrum of lenses opened up for specialty work, different looks, is unmatched. The claim of lens superiority is spurious IMO and nothing claimed I haven't been able to achieve as well with posy software. And a HUGE AMEN, to the OVF instead of EVF. My eyes get tired looking at another TV screen.

I'm old, really old. I bought a D40 Nikon in 2008 at the end of my film photography career. I ran tests including making enlargements. Except for, maybe, Kodachrome 25, it surpassed all 35mm film in every way. I eventually and finally upgraded to a D3200 which quadrupled the sensor to 24.2 megapixels. It is really nice. I will keep this camera and or replace the body as long as I can. You are right about the D850, it's like shooting 4x5 film. Good video. BTW - as a 20 year wedding photographer I shot Bronica S2a from 1974-1994. The cameras and lenses were all used even back then. They worked great for a little short of 300 weddings. You don't need the newest camera, you just need to be a good photographer.

I'm in the DSLR only for the price and lens availability. Canon and Nikon have A LOT of AF lenses in the used market, Nikon can use even manual very old F lenses and with Canon EF you can adapt M42 and a lot of other old mounts. The only mirrorless system that is that cheap is M4/3. Fuji is pricier, Sony is cheap only in old Nex models and with pricier lenses than M4/3.

I use both mirrorless and DSLRs. I'm an old guy (60) who has been taking pictures since I was 13. The real benefit of mirrorless, to me, is weight. I mostly do travel photographer and it's become a chore to lug aroung my 5d4 or 1dX (plus lenses) on photo safaris to the Rockies or Alaska, especially since I'm already toting a 30lb pack of clothes and camping supplies. With camera weight that went up to 50 or 55 pounds--too much for me now. I can manage an R6 with a few lenses. Overall, I stil prefer DSLRs because my eyes do not like EVFs. I still use my DSLRs for what limited studio I still do.

DSLR’s aren’t dead. Being inanimate they were never alive. I use a DSLR as I can’t afford the simpler, smaller and less complicated but far more expensive Mirrorless cameras and lenses. So far I haven’t had an instance where a Mirrorless camera would have made my photos better. The quality of my photographs depends a lot more on my talent and ability then the camera I am using. I have the camera and lenses that presently suite my style of shooting and my needs. I totally agree that Mirrorless has given us DSLR shooters some really great deals on equipment that for anywhere near the price just isn’t available in Mirrorless. Your video is well thought out and timely. DSLR’s are not dead except by those who want to sell you into a new system for a large profit or photographers who are sheep following the herd. I shoot with Nikon and have a great DSLR and top notch glass that I can’t afford to replace with Z cameras and lenses. I am hobbyist so dollars really count. I think dollars count for most pro shooters too but possibly their earnings can make up the difference for some anyway. I figure I will be quite satisfied with my present DSLR kit for quite some time into the future. No hurry to spend the steep cost of conversion when my present kit isn’t hampering me in any way. Thanks for saying all the things that are important to so many of us.

Timely video. I’ve been considering a Nikon D750 body. I have several Nikon digital bodies but none over 12mp. My Fuji X-T3 is 26mp and I find that resolution is the sweet spot for me. 36mp and up requires for me tripod use and I’m doing less landscape work that I would use a tripod for. The 24mp resolution of the D750 and that it’s a bit smaller and lighter than my D700 and it having 2 card slots pretty much makes it a no brainer. Now if I actually went out and shot some pix! 🤦‍♂️
@seesantos
@seesantos 11 ай бұрын
For the vast majority of people, not pro photographers or even enthusiasts who blow up some of their pics, 36 or 45mp is too much. Why take a photo like that and post it on social media? I just upgraded from a D300s - I've had that 300 for 14 years - to a D500. Nothing spectacular but certainly light years ahead with the new Exspeed and sensor even at 20mp, that's plenty for when I go on vacation or take pictures of my daughter jumping horses or playing volleyball. I went back and forth on a full frame but ended up on the crop factor and the frame rate. If one has unlimited funds and storage backup for those huge files, go for it.

I have the function buttons set up so with a quick press, it activates an AF mode so if one isn’t working I can switch to another without taking my eye away from the viewfinder. A split second lost could mean an image or more lost.

Ive tried to go from mirrorless back to DSLR twice and was miserable both tines. Being a people shooter, eye AF and the ability to see what your photo will look like in natural light before you shoot it are game changers. Going back to focus and recompose was not only frustrating, but resulted in out of focus shots at shallow DOF just like I remembered. It's like going back to manual focus, no thanks. Im getting too old for that now. If I shot something like landscapes, street etc...I could easily go back to a DSLR but not for what I do. Im also shooting more video theses days, so mirrorless is a must.

I have a Z6 and a D850. I like the Z6 and the Z lenses, but I’m increasingly drawn to using my D850. It has the same image quality as a Z7 ( and a Z8/Z9) and amazing features as well. I find in most cases I prefer an OVF and I love the handling of the camera. I recently added a vertical grip which improves its handling even more. The size doesn’t bother me and if you account for the weight of the lenses, carrying a full frame kit is not that much heavier than a full frame mirrorless with equivalent lenses, and as you pointed out, you can get that kit for substantially less money.

I honestly think that DSLR cameras could have had a future if camera manufacturers put the time, effort and money to make the technology grow alongside mirrorless cameras. Just look at the D780 : a full blown DSLR, but inside has the same tech as the Nikon Z6 with face/eye detection autofocus, hybrid autofocus, high quality video etc. The camera is obviously bigger because of the mirrorbox and oVF compared to its mirrorless counterpart, but honestly, it's worth it for having 2 cameras in one. I'm using a D700 alongside my fujifilm stuff and I don't think I'll ever sell that camera. Mark my words, in a few years DSLRs will pick up interest again for the OVF alone

@@paulconnors2078 yeah well that sounds like a nitpick. I just wanted to point out the fact that DSLR have older tech not because they are DSLR, just because manufacturers didn't bother to put the new tech in it. D780 being the proof that it can be done

Camera nut here (I’ve got lots), but I’ve dumped any mirrorless. I just like DSLRs. I agree 100% about EVF vs OVFs. If I want video for KZbin with AF, then something cheap & nasty will do the job. 😊

I very much enjoyed this video and your points. I could not agree more. I picked up a 810E two years ago and a D700 two years before that. I have been very happy with the images I get. My collection of lenses is growing including some old AIS lenses as their is joy in manual focus sometimes in my landscape work. I still feel that these things are better than I am as the work produced in the past by great photographers with them is still beyond me. But again “the photographer not the gear” Again great video 👍🏼💪🏼

Great video. My main Camera is a K5 IIs and I bought a Nikon D300 as a second body. And I love using my DSLRs and in both cases I can use decades worth of lenses. Like you I shoot film too so I like being able to go back and forth. That being said I also have an Olympus EM 5 Mark 2 that I love. I use each camera for specific purposes.

I've been perfectly satisfied with my D810 since I picked it in late 2016 (just before they launched the D850). Honestly I think the additional capabilities in terms of sharpness and noise etc have been on levels beyond the ability of human vision to discern. I guess unless you need absolute silent shooting and quick switching between stills and video then mirrorless is not necessary at all.

Your hands stood out immediately to me, they dwarf those cameras. I love it 🙂Bet you can handhold a 400 F2.8 for hours and hours... I still prefer the output of my almost 9 year old D810 over that of my xpro3. Let alone the DOF that I get with an 85 1.4 for example...

I just discovered your channel and subscribed. I really like your take on cameras and lenses, as well as the subject matter you shoot. I am a longtime Nikon shooter and didn't migrate to digital until 2006 when I bought a D200 and a year later a D300. I purchased my first FF Nikon DSLR, a D750 (that I still use) in 2017. I love that camera! I bought my first mirrorless camera when I purchased the Z9 in June 2022. However, in December 2022, I went back to the same store near me in New Jersey USA and purchased a D850. I am a creature of habit and just love the Optical viewfinders of DSLRs and wanted to have Nikon's greatest DSLR ever. I also appreciate how the D850 with grip fits my hands and shooting style. Having similar menus from one Nikon body to the next is also a huge factor in what I buy and how I use the camera(s) with the F mount glass I have. (So far, I have only two lenses for my Z9). I also like that F mount glass with an adapter is compatible with Z bodies while Z mount glass is (unfortunately) NOT backward compatible. Just recently, I managed to find a mint condition Nikon F6 and grip. Yes, their last great film SLR body! If you saw it, I'll bet you would have bought it, too. Something about shooting film these days forces you to slow down and be mindful of what you are shooting and how you are doing it (due to the cost of film and processing these days). In closing, I do like your choice of subjects to discuss and when you present the topics. It's great to get an Aussie's viewpoint (although I am also a huge fan of several of your countrymen, i.e. MATT GRANGER, ADRIAN ALFORD and MATT IRWIN because all too often, American YTers often sound too much alike in what they shoot, how they present their material and when they post. Please keep your great content coming. It is useful and more importantly, quite enjoyable to view.

Congrats on your new second hand setup. I picked up an old Canon 5d MK II, 17-40 f4L, 24-105 f4L, 70-200 f/4L and 50mm f1.8 II for £900 which I can also adapt to my Fuji XT2 with a fringer adapter. As I always say, just because it's old the gear it's as good today as the day it was released. I did consider the Nikon D810 but the 5d MK II (be it a smaller 21mp sensor) is substantially cheaper yet still an excellent full frame camera.

The only problem with DSLR is the misfocus when the focus sensor is misaligned. If you want perfect focus then you need to correct the micro focus for every lens and there are a lot of DSLR that don't have the correction. It's only needed with very shallow DOF so it's not a big problem, but it's still a problem.

Im in the same boat. A photographer hybrid (film and digital). I went from SLR to DSLR then 11 years ago Fuji mirrorless with the hopes of being a video/photographer hybrid, didn't happen so last fall I decided to go back to DSLRs with the D850 for all the same reasons you stated. I feel at home with a SLR/DSLR, plus the battery life and the native use of all the F lenses I collected over the last four decades. DSLRs are NOT dead if you are a photographer, in fact I'd argue they are better all around photography wise.

I’m a photographer, not videographer. DSLRs are supposed to be still photography cameras, not video cameras. In fact, videography is a different ball-game altogether. When I do record casual videos, my smartphone is always good enough to serve this purpose. However, had I been a video storyteller; I would certainly use a dedicated video camera. I’m a Canon DSLR user, hobbyist photographer shooting landscape, street life and wildlife. All my old but gold pro bodies are good enough to carry me through at least the next ten years if not more. Interesting thing is; I bought most of them used with huge shutter life remaining. The bodies are supported by quality native lenses. Therefore, I concentrate on subject, theme and composition paying no attention to new releases. EVF lag is a huge issue with mirrorless cameras which is why it didn’t impress me. BTW, I’m deeply respectful to Nikon and its users. Since you claim D850 is a great camera, I fully agree with it. Long live DSLRs. Thank you for the video.

Awesome video and topic!!!! I am right along with you. I still shoot with a DSLR D810 & D610 Nikon bodies. I have a great lens system that I have worked hard to build and like how my workflow has become with using Nikon 24mm F1.4, 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, 70-200mm f2.8, and a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8. I also have a Nikon d series manual 104mm f2.5 and a Nikon macro 55mm f2.8. It’s a system that works and the fact that it was Pro about 5-6years ago hasn’t changed because of mirrorless cameras. I agree with on everything you said especially being a guy with big hands and ergonomics of a camera body in your hands. Great video!

I started with film in the early 2000s then took a big break from photography as a hobby from 2004 until 2013 when I bought a Canon G1X then a G3X which was used to produce quick content for social media. These days the main tool for social media updates is a flagship iPhone. But 12 months ago I finally bought a Nikon D810 to make use of my old SLR lens. For me it was the right time to jump in as prices were affordable in the used market and wasn’t too difficult finding a lightly used studio camera. I use it to take flash photos that are near impossible on an iPhone so only sees usage once in a blue moon.

Great video. Really reinforces my decision to by a D850 over the Z8. I own a lot of F Mount glass and I am a landscape photographer, so frames per second and focus speed are not a major concern to me. The Z8 is an incredible camera, but for my style of photography it is not an advancement worth the cost.

I'm quite happy with my two Nikon D500s and tack sharp 500mm and 300MM PF lenses for wildlife photography. I only rarely miss focus (yes, even without eye detect, animal detect, etc.) and 10 fps is pretty good frame rate. The saved money helps me to travel and enjoy photography in other locations. :)

I've had a Nikon D7000 for several years. I love it. But, it just will not focus correctly anymore. I was considering one of the Z's, but I think you've convinced me I can do ok with the D850. I'm not a professional, so I don't need to spend 4K on a new rig. Thanks for this vid. - Brian

It might be that the camera itself from inception had problems with autofocus. My first dslr was a d5200,and got on my nerves cause the shots were not in focus, most of the time. Read online that it shared the focus motor with the d7000. I said maybe it's bogus, maybe i'm seeing things. Went abroad to work as a photographer for a hotel, taking photos of customers in that resort, hundreds a day. My team leader could not understand why the photos were not in focus. Camera provided by the company was,you guessed it,d7000. Then it clicked, and told him that this model has problems, just like my personal camera. He said that in a week we'll change the cameras anyways, cause they are old and overused. So the brought me a d7100,which lo and behold, focused like a charm. We all saw the difference. After i left that job,i sold my personal d5200 and bought a d7200,which like the d7100 focused correctly. So keep that in mind. D850 sound like a dream,if i ever upgrade to full frame,i would like one of those. I hate EVF,and i think staring into a tiny screen is really awful for your eyes, which many people don't even discuss this. We are surrounded by screens all day, having a tiny one so close to your retina...idk man! P.s: if i remember correctly, the problem was when using autofocus through viewfinder. If i focused using liveview,it seemed to focus appropriately.

I agree with much of what you said in this video. I don’t care evf, I don’t like or want a little camera. I don’t intend to sell my d500’s, d850’s, d810, my 18 lenses just go out and spend many many thousands of dollars to replace what I have and like.

Great video and I totally agree. I’m just about to jump ship from Canon to a Nikon D850. I’ve watched countless videos reviewing both the D850 and Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras. I love using a dslr for the OVF, which the D850 seems to have an excellent one and the lens choices. I mainly shoot aviation, both military and commercial, so will be pairing the D850 with a telephoto most of the time. The high megapixel capability of the D850 really appeals as I’ll be cropping quite a bit. Not too sure which lens to go with at the moment, will need to do some research. Really enjoyed the video and some great images 👌🏻📷

If you are learning photography then an old ( 10-15 year old ish ) good body and cheep but good glass is the best way to learn. I would recommend the Nikon D700 or the Canon 5D are a good start or the D610 or 5D MK2 if you want a step up. Spend as much, if not more on the lenses. Use it for a few years and if you want to keep at it then upgrade, either way you wont lose much money if you sell the lot.
