Add to the list: 1. check the viewfinder for smudges (prism de-lamination); to much dust or haze 3. light seals when you check the curtain 3. the mirror damper foam /padding for wear, and regarding the lens 4. also check for secure clicks of the aperture ring, and for any cracks because most are plastic, and smooth focusing (instead of grittiness or dryness); this also applies for zoom lenses

I had to get mine from ebay. The seller doesn't know for sure if the camera is working or not as they havent used it before. They said the shutter opens and closes, film advance works and the shutter release clicks the lens and the mirror has no damage. Is this information enough to make sure that it works?

If the seller has a good rating on eBay sure. But sometimes even with a good rating some sellers just don’t know anything about cameras. If they allow returns would be what makes or breaks a sale like that.
