When I first started watching people like Andrew buy old heavy equipment, I wanted and expected them to restore them so they looked new. Thanks to Andrew and others like him I've come to appreciate fixing what's only broke and leaving what gives the equipment character alone.
@jakebroesky4409

up to a point ... preventative maintenance can save you time and costs overall. You can order the parts on your own time and get better deals than scrambling around and having little room to look for a better price. Having your equipment break down to much tarnishes your reputation. Breakdowns can cause delays that have a cascade effect....do that once on a critical job and who wants to work with someone who does not maintain their equipment? No one does ... i have seen in the construction industry people get literally blacklisted for many reasons. When you do preventative maintenance at your shop you have all the tools there to make it efficient as opposed to some job XX miles away where you need a tool that you ^&%&**( forgot and should have brought with you or the untimely waste of time and expense of having to bring it back to your shop to fix it or having the added expense of having to rent a replacement which can not only make you have zero profit but a financial loss and a one day job now turns into a 2-3 day job. Andrew at one point could not afford that but his equipment was small and fairly easy to fix and to see issues crop up before they got to bad or critical. Now he has replacements for most things. Also now that he is established with his UTUBE income (and other income streams) you rarely see him going out for jobs now right. He can now build his value up right on his property instead of the added expense and time of travel

Enjoy your new machine. I’d recommend wearing leather gloves when pulling cable. Even swaged cables will have strands break, and those strands will rip skin easily. I hope you know a logger who’s brain you can pick. Skidders steer in ways that take getting used to. When coming down a steep incline, make sure you have a load, or the rear end will get light, and you may lose the ability to steer; if in doubt when empty, back down. Others have shared their experience too. Stay safe, stay well.

Try setting the choker near the end of the log rather than the middle. Also in a difficult location, try one at a time. It ma not sure on that particular model but me and my dad owned a 440 John Deere and was very satisfied with it it is a beast. The one drawback we had with our skidded was that if engine died you did not have brakes emergency only hit best way to try this is stop on hill and shut off engine and be prepared to grab emergency brake if necessary other than that it is a awesome machine and parts are somewhat available. Good luck with you John Deere and keep on making high quality videos you are a master at that.

It's outstanding that Andrew uses the proper safety equipment and techniques when he's using a chainsaw cutting down trees. I see lots of videos on youtube of people who don't not understanding it's extremely dangerous to ignore your safety when cutting down trees.

The machine you bought is actually a really good unit. Very old but quite usable. Very small brake reservoirs so keep a eye on them as their actually hard to bleed by ones self. This gets around good in mud. Wide open throttle an wiggle right through hard to go places. Chains are not cheap either

Hi Andrew just a tip from an old skidder operator, take the tyre chains off, unless you are working in a LOT of mud,, they don't have that much effect on dry hard surface, they pick up snags / sticks and press them into the tyres. But the worst the chains wear out fast in the dry and are not cheep to replace.

And yesterday i was like: "Hmmm, i wonder when Andrew posts a new video..." But holy shit Andrew! I thought the Cat 988 was Overkill, but this thing is even more overkill! XD The good thing is, now you have a REALLY good vehicle to take care of dead trees, use for logging when clearing properties for someone, and even use it as a recovery winch if necessary. XD 13:00 Well, i guess that wasnt planned like this but actually that small tree made it easier to get the logs up there. XD

With all those trees cut down Andrew, it still makes me wonder why you don't have you own gasoline powered sawmill. "Your not skittish about purchasing 1 and learning how to use one are you?" Cool machine, cool video, you could sell wood to local furniture makers, cabinet makers, the possibilities are endless you could even sell wood to some who builds Horse-drawn buggies lol. With all that wood that you have in that pile you could make enough framing wood to build a good sized storage garage to keep all of your vehicles in doors during the winter! If I had the property that you own and the vehicles that you own and all that wood to build some big structure with, with my own hands I'd do it. But I don't have all that property that you have and probably never will have a desire to have so much property to deal with because I'm an underachiever and I'm not upset about that in the least. Haha , Really neat vehicle though really !!!

Every one of the trees he cut down was rotted to the point that they were dropping large limbs and snapping in half when they were felled. There was no usable lumber in them. The wood in his pile looked like it was mostly rotted too. There *might* have been a couple of usable logs in there, but most aren't. Seems like in one of Andrews video there was some discussion about some good trees he felled going to a sawmill, but I don't recall when.

@@t.r.l.4377 Yeah, that's the other part of it. Andrew has on occasion expressed his contempt for wood as a construction material. He prefers steel and concrete. I don't think we're going to see Andrew buy a portable sawmill and start building wood framed shops any time soon.
