Bought my G27 new in 2010 for €210,- and used it almost daily since then. Never had any issues. I also ran a programm about 2 years ago that automaticly calibrated the steering wheel to reoptimize everything after all those years and make it more precise again. (Not the stock g27 logitech profiler). It runs a programm and your wheel will turn and test things for a few minutes. After that my wheel was noticably more accurate in assetto corsa. Still works great! I Also tried my friends G920 and the G27 feels better imo. I also just read somewhere that the g27 has stronger FFB or something so that makes sense

Thank you for the video. In Sweden, these cost no more than $80. In addition to the heat sink, if you don't mind the appearance, you can drill/cut a larger hole in the base and install a small fan to pull all hot air out.

You can push those spring-loaded knobs down and turn slight right to lock them out of the way. If they are getting stuck you need to clean them out.

great video i did pickup a g27 that was not working for £50 and turned out it was the encoder was cracked looked on ebay and got a stainless steel encoder that fits and working great now so got a full working setup for £72 that works out around $80 usd

I currently have an MIA G27. The first thing that broke was the reverse gear selector switch, where you press down on the shifter. I managed to reconfigure my controls in Grand Prix Legends and Euro/American Truck Sims to select reverse using a button. But then I started to get the alignment problem. Everything is aligned ok on the grid, but after only a couple of laps, I'm having to turn the wheel about 45 degrees to the left to get the car to go straight. It happens even faster if I'm using force-feedback and bumping the car/truck over kerbs. But after watching this video, I might try getting myself some Hex/Allen Keys and opening up the case to find the encoder wheel. Hopefully, like you, I can find a way to stop it spinning on the shaft. Thanks for the inspiration! 👍 EDIT: I've just tried to find the follow-up video that you said you were going to make, with more details about your repairs, tools, materials etc, but I can't find it. Did you smoke a blunt and forget all about it? If so, that's why I don't like drugs! 😂

Thank you so much for this. I bought my G27 new maybe 10 years ago, for my PS3, but not used the wheel in over five years. I bought a gaming PC some years ago, with plans to upgrade to Fanatec gear. Fanatec stopped selling what I wanted and my interest in driving games stopped. Spotted a G29 on Amazon sale (not much of a saving really), which lead me to research if it was worth me buying. I had no idea about the over heating issues, or the fake air vents, or the encoder wheel issue of the G27. From what I've read on a quick Google search of G27 v G29, there are the same inside, so the G29 will logically have the same issues. I do know that the wheel clamps are a pain on my thighs and just get in my way as my wheel is bolted to a stand. I have seen a video on how to remove the clamps, which I didn't want to do when the wheel was under warranty, then I got kind of scared of breaking the wiring, taking the wheel apart to remove the clamps. I would never have thought to replace the grease. I would never have thought to open the vents up. I would never have had the genius idea to use RC motor heat sinks. You have inspired me to stick with my G27,. I have subscribed and will look forwards to your other videos on the G27.

The knobs are probably not broken or stuck. They are supposed to stay down, so they aren't in the way. Turning them a bit will allow the spring to push up the knob allowing the user to rotate it manually.

Just bought one for $85 with clutch pedal missing, already ordered a random $10 cheap ps2 thrustmaster wheel bundle to cut out and solder the pedal with potentiometer from there xd. I'll do these mods too very useful info, seems like you can also buy metal version of encoder wheel too...

Mine cost $180 Canadian for the whole kit. I played 1000 hours. I paid 18 cents/hour to sim-race. That is less than 3% of most people's payroll. Worth it to sim race.

This is quite a spectacular guy. The placement of the encoder on the back of the motor shaft is plain bad though, they should have found some spot for it away from direct heat source. The reason it cracks is that this is polyamide (the family of plastics that Nylon belongs to) and the way it's made, it comes out of the mould undersized and brittle; then they bag it with water and condition it to absorb about 4% of its weight and volume in moisture, maybe a little more, it not only becomes super tough ans supple, it also expands in size. It's then easily applied to the shaft, and then en route to you, silica gel in the package absorbs whatever excess moisture comes out and it shrinks right on and it's solid, it won't fail for a while. This way it's good for 10-30 years of life in most mechanisms. But the problem is you need to avoid excess heat, as it drives the moisture out of the plastic, and as it shrinks and becomes more brittle, the force of the metal shaft pressing outwards on it is guaranteed going to break it. It's not the centrifugal force, that's basically nothing. It has some ability to regenerate because it's strongly hygroscopic, but it's limited. Of course that shaft is going to be quite warm in use, you see the problem. Also you're gradually pushing up against the design life of that now well aged plastic piece, and some climates are more brutal to it than others. The reason it broke was that it had to be already on the brink of failure due to moisture loss. It can be reconditioned by the same way it was done at a factory, but when it's cracked it's too late and polyamides can't be permanently glued (low surface energy, it rejects foreign chemicals), and solvents that can weld it are restricted in availability. It's better to get a replacement encoder anyway, aftermarket ones are either metal or made from resins that don't share this failure mode, they should all be fine long term.

I'm very proud of my G27 setup, it have served me tirelesly for about 16 years and until now I never knew there were anything "under the hood" but I would'nt change it just for a game that does'nt support it. I never had any issues with it and I guess it's because I use it for ordinary (non racing) games.

I have read that g27, g29 and g920 are essentialy same wheel so my g29 (from second hand) does not have cooling too and I am sim racing on it for about year. Many times much more than 4h (some times up to 10h maybe even more[addiction? yes] ). It did not broke, just be sure that force feedback is not clipping. have fun ;)

My suggestion for the encoder - buy a brass encoder instead of gluing the same plastic till it breaks again. Change it to a brass encoder and you will Never have the alignment problem ever again.

I appreciate the advice but bruv it's $4 for krazy glue vs $33 plus shipping for a brass encoder. That plastic ain't going to break because it's now reinforced with a steel washer and I modded the wheel for improved cooling with $16 cooling fins so the risk of the plastic encoder wheel heating up and breaking again is very low. Been playing since this video and no alignment issues have come up.

I think i got the one that pops up in google when you type 'G27 brass encoder'. The one from Vietnam. It was around 5 years ago, no idea if you can still buy from him. It does not have to be brass. Any metal will be better than a thin plastic. I see aliexpress has one from stainless steel for 14 euros. I did the same thing you did @VVeedragon, with glue and steel washer, but i made a mess and was just doing it poorly. The glue also probably wasn't the best, because the encoder broke three more times, before i decided - enough is enough - i need a metal encoder 😂

@@Yankijs24 ahh yes it can be a bit annoying if you don't let the glue cure, you need to use fast drying super glue and you need to let it cure for like 24 hrs I believe. But yes it is messy, I always get my fingers stuck together when I do it. but yeah those brass encoders from vietnam look a helluva lot better than the steel ones you get from ebay :P

Been using a g27 for years with none of these issues except the overheating, I just cut a hole and mounted a PC fan in it but other than that I've used this heavily even with the fan unplugged I've never had anything break or come miss aligned. Also the g27 was out before ghub and doesn't need it, g27 only needs the Logitech profiler. The only downside the g27 has is overheating, old ffb and because it has a dual motor system each motor has to be set to not fight each other and therefore creates a center deadzone that has no ffb. Good review but the g27 is a great starter wheel for $100 to $200 and is highly recommended for beginners. Plus you get buttons on your shifter which they don't do anymore

Managed to snag one for €160 had the g29 before but sold it because It just sucked to use in an office chair on my desk without a dedicated cockpit. Which the playseat challenge seems to be the easiest an Cheapest way to aquire said cockpit. Honestly I’d love to see more competitors in the steering wheel market you literally just have Logitech making the “plug n play” full steering wheel experience. Thrustmaster is the only one who comes close with the T150 but come on, two pedals? Forget about it lmao Competition will make this stagent budget entry level steering wheel segment of the market alot more interesting imo

So i have a big issue with the profiler, when i download it, it extracts but ends up in an open up folder and doesnt bring me to the actual profiler. So im stuck with the 180 degrees on the wheel instead of 900

The clamp locking screws can be locked into a lower position once you've tightened the wheel base and shifter to your desk/rig. Just twist and push down on them.

I have a g27 steering wheel its awesome for drifting driving simulator games fs22 and Euro Truck Simulator 2 and for American Truck Simulator. I bought it used in Sweden from a guy near by my city for 150euro and it still works

Nice, do you still have Logi G Hub installed? That's the source of all the issues, because G Hub conflicts with the older drivers of the G27 since it used the old g hub that they never really updated and supported since.

The main appeal of a G27 in this modern age is that it works well with older titles while still being useable with modern ones. I ordered one recently, because I want to play some NFS Underground with a wheel, but my fanatec wheel is not compatible at all. I have to download a ton of software and mods to barely run it. NFSU with a G27 is one of my best memories, simply fantastic.

i bought my g27 and installed the drivers, at first it didn't work. Then after at least 2 days of troubleshooting it randomly started working and i hadn't touched any settings after in fear of it randomly breaking again. recently i unplugged it because it was in the way on my desk for work. However now i want to play with it again and it just doesn't work. Everything is plugged in, (pedal cable, shifter cable, power supply cable, usb and power brick.) All buttons and calibration work except the pedals. There just not registering. Im thinking of selling it back in hopes of buying a newer wheel which works on windows 11 but because i Know it previously worked its really annoying!! any fixes? (dust and wires shortages are not an issue because everything else works and it was working previously.)

@@Jayy_R7 hi bro, so, after a while I started to really dislike the g27 wheel because I practice drift and the g27 is simply too slow for advanced drifting... If you have the money, I advise you totally skip the gear-driven wheels and go straight for the belt-driven and direct drive ones. Personally I would recommend the Moza R5 wheel

I own the G27 for past 3 years - I haven't opened it up since then XD. The wheel works just as I bought it. I played on it 6 hours and it was just fine, so I just assume your died because someone really just put hard time on it. I don't like people who just don't take care for their stuff. I play Dirt Rally 2.0 and AC on it, but really cool advices!

The encoder wheel likely degraded due to sitting for a long time in a place with dry warm air. Chemistry/material science reasons. Then when heated up again it embrittled and the shaft pressure broke it. I made a longer comment on the topic.

Strange my g27 have only one motor if i good remember ..strange.. One time my wheel have problem with aligment i check it and some dirt was on encoder wheel and i just exhale on it and it fall of.

You can get an aluminium bracket to replace a plastic one, it makes the unit more rigid and dampens a lot of the noise. There's a vid or two on YT if you search for it.

So, one question. I have a little disability where my foot doesn't push down very well...called drop foot... so is there any way to use anything else for gas and brake other than the foot pedals like using the paddle shifters on the wheel for gas and brake instead of shifting gears or am I just screwed and should just avoid buying a steering wheel?

Most games will allow you to set up custom controls. I don't think you want to be paddle throttling and braking though, it's not going to work out well especially in more simulationy titles, as these controls are simple switches while you want continuous inputs, going too hard on either gas or brake will usually cause you to lose control. Worth a try though i would say. What i suggest is that you find someone in your region who is good at building things, someone with at least a little say model building or 3D printing background and minimal knowledge of electronics, and work out a custom control device. The pedals are electrically potentiometers and are on a simple connector that is easy to solder. You may be able to buy a broken Xbox360 pad (none other will work) for $5 and extract the trigger mechanism and special potentiometers from that, and mount them somewhere on the wheel where you can reach those triggers with your fingers at the back of the steering wheel. You can also find some other small-angle or short slide potentiometers and mount them on the front of the steering wheel to control them with your thumbs up or down. Maybe you can also adapt to push the pedal not with the ball of the foot but with the heel, might that work with your limitation? You just need to secure the pedal base against sliding somehow. I suggest also evaluating simpler wheels like Driving Force GT which MIGHT have lighter pedals. That aren't trying to be heavy and car-like, where the whole pedal base is more flimsy so it's not designed for all that much force. Good luck! OH OH WAIT A SECOND. I remembered something. There's this wheel, Logitech Driving Force WIRELESS. It's designed as a lap wheel rather than a desk attachment and isn't operated with pedals. Instead it has continuous paddle throttle/brake. It's more of a toy and less of a preferred simulation device, so it goes for very little money, less than $50 used, while its MSRP was only $100. It's for PS3 and PC. I don't know how good its compatibility with Windows 10/11 or new games is.

Is your G27 really generates so much heat? Mine is G25, it just get to warm level even after 4 hour of use (racing only not drifting). Or maybe because you use it for drifting?

IMO, no. But if you like fixing stuff and making it better cause you are cheap then, yes :) I recommend the Logitech g920 wheel, it is basically the same inside but with better driver support

i am probably not the first to say this, but, clutch pedal. so, the profiler can read the clutch pedal using the properties thing, but, on the logitech profiler application, the clutch pedal assigment thing is not there, also, in forza horizon 4, i have spammed the clutch pedal like 100 times it doesnt detect the pedal at all, please help me. btw, i didnt just buy a g27, i have it since 2011 or sum

hmm I am not sure what is going on with your clutch but it might be that it is simply broken. you would need to check with a voltmeter on the wire connections to see if there is a signal.

@@VVeedragon I have checked, and it is perfectly fine, in fact, I uninstalled logitech profiler and it is perfectly fine, works as intended, on every game. So, is that a profiler thing or what is going on exactly?

on top there were not air vents it was holes for third party attachements

Why investing in old stuff? I have a TS-PC Racer, but bought in 2020, and I wouldn't buy that nowdays. Because when I bought the TS-PC Racer there was limited choise in simracing, it was the beginning of the pandamic (april 2020). Now, in early 2023, you can easily buy a direct drive base Fanatec CSL DD 8 Nm with wheel, for less then I bought my 6 Nm non-direct drive base in early 2020.
