Another great video! We should make an actual written list with brands like these. I’m sure there are many more out there to discover and add to these few you mentioned in the video. Also, I watched the Roger Smith case making video. It’s truly incredible and awe-inspiring.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Eddie, if I'm not mistaken Smith is trying to achieve all of the skills that George Daniels listed as the "complete" watchmaker-when Daniels died, he had met all but two. Roger wants to master all of them and he is certainly well on his way. Take care and stay safe😷 Bill

When Daniel Roth ran the Breguet Atelier for Chaumet Bros., Roth was contracting with Michel Parmigiani for work on high end complications. Breguets of this time are amazing amazing watches.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Yes Howard! I'll bet you were one of the few who knew that Michel Parmigiani built the Breguet souscription watches. I thought it was Daniel Roth who breathed life back into the Breguet, with the 3130 (which is another 'like to have'), but it was Parmigiani who built the two souscription watches. Here's some more fun with a hand-wound pocket souscription watch by Breguet: www.thenakedwatchmaker.com/decon-breguet-souscription ... it's almost like getting an introduction to watchmaking because the movement is so clear and simple. Be safe and take care, Bill 😷
@h1115514 жыл бұрын
WatchArtSci Don Locke who is a Connecticut resident and a friend of Mike Margolis was the North American Breguet Service Director and the North American ETA Service Director. He was involved with Breguet when Roth ran it and Parmigiani was working with Breguet. Don was the first North American rep for Parmigiani and actually designed an early Parmigiani reference. Don is probably about 80 but I had the pleasure of visiting with him in Arizona at about the first of the year when he was in town for a classic automobile event.

He lives over in Danbury (or thereabouts), and I'd like to get over there and meet him after the pandemic is under control. There's another guy who lives about 15 minutes from me who makes watches and enamel dials who I'd like to meet as well.... again after this blasted pandemic is through. The almost criminal lack of direction from this current administration is beyond bad... I'm telling nothing you cannot be aware of in Arizona. Stay well and take care, Bill 😷

Great video Bill, I use to find so many deals on Daniel Roth watches on Catawiki, but they seem to have dried up. I really wanted to get a PC or a Chrono, and they were dirt cheap compared to what you are getting. I think a Roger Dubuis watches also are now getting all picked up quick, only downside for me is the size, but it looks like a top watch. I think Parmigiani is also one of those brands that are getting picked up by people who know the phonological value of the watch and were waiting like a hawk for the pre-owned market.

Hi Bill. Great video. Where did you find the Hours of Love Watch?
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, I just did a Google search for "Antoine Preziuso Hours of Love"; then I clicked the "images," and below each image is a source. What you'll find is that most were from auctions and many were in Asia. (You'll have to remember to translate HKD into USD, Euros or Pounds or whatever unit of currency you use). It's funny that some of the best watchmakers have toyed with erotica, most notably Sven Andersen (andersen-geneve.ch/cabinet-de-curiosites/), but one of the wildest is by Ulysse Nardin-a recent series (2019) about an affair between a woman who falls off a boat and a mermaid.(www2.ulysse-nardin.com/new/manara ) Also, you can find lots of automata involving les amours in vintage pocket watches. Take care, Bill

That first Daniel Roth/Jean Daniel Nicolas tourbillon is gorgeous, but why show the movement with a huge plate that obscures?? Roth Retrograde and the 24 Cities are quite fetching! @14:16 Skeletonized Roger Dubuis look like some design from HR Geiger - to be charitable! I dont get the appeal - that skeletonized design looks like bad teen-aged taste. Bill, I really really like your RD14 Easy Diver, except for the needlessly limiting strap lugs. Nice vid - cheers, mate!
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Forbin, what I learned from the Bvlgari that I got for our son is that wide straps wear very comfortably for a larger watch. The Easy Diver is the biggest watch I own, but wears light as a feather. Maybe the 3rd center lug helps? As for the skeletonized Dubuis ... I agree. Take care and be safe 😷

For sure, you'd be getting a lot of watch for your money with these, Bill, but some of them are acquired tastes - even for those with eclectic ones.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Gilberto, acquired taste is right! The idea of having a true independent means that the watchmaker can develop his watches with the open field of an artist and craftsman. There's no focus group or corporate overseers to make watches that would satisfy the lowest common denominator. Stay well and take care, Bill 😷

@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын

I see you still have Henry Winston. It's a nice piece. I was thinking that Credor watches might also be included in this category. I did some research and it's not really a good deal. Only their top watches are good, but cost too much. Their more affordable pieces have great hand made dials and hand assembled ultra thin 3Hz manual wind movements, but their precision is +25 to -15 seconds. It's hard to believe they are satisfied with that.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Frantisek, Credor seemed to be a watch that Seiko never was too sure what to do with and it kept bumping into the GS. Like the 4L movement, it somehow just didn't fit; but the 4L became a hit in the Soprod A10. Take care and be safe😷
