Back in 1987, (or maybe at the beginning of the '90's...) I learned to drive manual transmission in a Lada. It was my uncle's car. It was bright orange with yellow and brown stripes on the sides. It droves like a tractor. My uncle was very proud of his Lada. It was is first brand new car. He kept it for ten years with very few issues.

I was thinking the same thing - and then I remembered something even crazier… The brand new Lada’s being made this year (for those “lucky” terrorists spouses or parents who may “win” them) are still being made to almost these standards (aside from body panels which look somewhat current)… They still have no ABS, no airbags, no electronic anything, no satnav or anything more than a basic CD player, no cruise control, no power steering or brakes… and the list just keeps going on… lol 😂

"Indestructible" vs. "repairs just queued one after another" seems to be LIKE contradictory. My experience with Lada: if you can't repair it yourself, you have a very good friend you visit very often: your local mechanic. And you always need a second car if you're really dependent on a car because you never know what stupid illness your Lada will have the next day.
@Baldricksturnip Жыл бұрын
@@rechtschreibungistsexy2202 True. It's contradictory. Under indestructible I mostly meant it was built like a tank. We had several parking accidents with other car owners, not a dent on Lada, just scrapes. But yes, visits to the repair shop were very common at the end of its life. It was almost certain it would just stop in the middle of nowhere during the worst blizzard.

I can only speak for pre-2000 cars in the US. Manual transmissions were more efficient. Also, they were faster. I had both a 94 Corolla manual & an automatic. Both cars were efficient, well built cars. Although both were slow, the automatic was slower & got worse mpg. This was in 2003, when I first started driving. Even then, especially when it came to used sports cars, the manuals were more expensive and just more sought after.

My first VW Citi Golf started with a choke in the mornings, had no power steering and almost vents like that. This was in the mid 90s. The Citi Golf s before the 90's had a clutch cable problem as well. I had 3 Citi Golfs after that. The engine improved (fuel injection etc), the look improved on the inside, but none of them had power steerings. Obviously I loved the Citi Golf very much, power steering or not. Nobody ever knew when I replaced my car because on the outside the shape didn't change and I always bought a white one. It's a pity they don't make them anymore. I now drive a Kia Seltos GT with power steering and can't imagine how I managed all those years without it. Unfortunately I also lost the muscle mass in my arms when I changed from ordinary steering to power steering. 😊

LADAs are good cars to have if you live in the former USSR. Their engines are simple and all parts readily available in former USSR countries. Also, mechanics of former USSR know how to fix them easily. Western vehicles are super complicated with all their computer gadgetry and complex engines, power steering, etc. However if you are not a “fixer-up” type person, a LADA might give you tons of headaches.

25:05 in German you can also say "Spital". And the way you pronounce "Krankenhaus" is just right out of your imaginary stereotype. Nobody says it like that. Actually for most of the Middle Ages it was German scholars who kept the beacon of the Latin language alight, while in the romance speaking countries they mixed it more and more with their native dialect and hence spoke a bad Latin, which to some extent is still true today. And from whom do you think the Poles, or the Hungarians, or even the Romanians learned Classical Latin (and thereby introduced the word "hospital" in their language)? From Italy? No from Germans.
