In my experience, I've listed my maximum bid. Then at the auction, if I win, the price suddenly ends up at my maximum. It doesn't make me feel good about buying at auction. Has anyone else had that experience?

Interesting vid Leo. for some one like me who hasn't used any auction houses before. Personally I've been a Vcoins guy for a long time. I do like to look up what some of the coins went for at auction when I find the one I want next, just to get a idea of price and see other examples of the coin. As always thx for all your work.

I can personally relate to most of the contents of this tutorial, thanks & hats off for the efforts! I try to avoid auctions & prefer outright purchase after some research, but feel the lots introduced in auctions are better compared to the ones offered for outright purchase. Anyway, I am bidding few ancient coins in an auction tomorrow.

Auctions are a ton of fun. But with shipping and premiums, you need to be willing to spend a few hundred dollars per auction minimum. Never pay retail! Great insight Leo. Great video.

Thats true! Auctions are not a good deal if you want to buy individual low-value coins.

I personally don't really like bidding. If I see a coin I really really want, I do my research to see what prices they typically go for, see the BP, and where the auction house is at. I've also gotten a few coins that I have dealers represent me, I tell them the coin I want and how much I'm willing to pay. They typically do like a 5% charge on top of the hammer price, but they bid for you, and can deal with stuff like shipping and customs which can be a huge hassle if the auction house is outside the country.

I've bought from them once. Their online presence is a bit archaic, but the quality of the coins they offer is adequate, and I havent seen any fakes yet.

Definitely stick to your budget, one of my first auctions I set a budget of 100, and after buying a few extra cheap coins (10-15$) i had to foot a 300 $ bill.

ONLY Bid live - If you put in a pre bid with an auction company they will in most cases hit you for your max bid - I bid the starting bid of $ 10 for a roman coin with my max of $ 100. - This was 7 days before the auction started - The very next day I was at $ 100. - This was a small auction house in England who I will never buy from again.

I'm watching 4 coins at an auction. Did my market research including AC Search and now the current bid is past my max and there is still a week to go. Now it is, how bad do I want any of those coins? Are prices too high? Are my valuations too low? I think it will end up being a pass and keep my eyes open for those coin types in the future. Discipline and patience.

Great guide for new collectors and a nice reminder for seasoned ones as well, on the psychological aspects of bidding (and especially, over-committing when bidding). As a suggestion, perhaps it would be a good idea to have the title of the coins that are being shown while the voice-over is on.

Each one has its own specialties, this greatly depends on what you collect. At least you know if they are in the auction platforms, they must be Ok to do business with.

I had to laugh at the psychological aspects. As I know it. I guess everyone has to experience collecting fever at first. As I see it, even coins purchased for less than 50 euros can make a nice collection.

One can absolutely make a wonderful collection with sub-50 Euro coins!

Some of my favorite buys have been sub 50. My wife always jokes when she sees more expensive pieces and how gorgeous they are compared to the majority of our collection but nearly faints when she sees the final prices. Treat yourself every now and then though and spend the whole budget on a single coin that you really connect with. Leo talks about his first Athenian Tetradrachm in one of his videos. I related alot.
