Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are going to buy and test the next cheapest engine in the list, the porter tier 2! This is the upgraded version of the starter engine with more tender space! I've brought @DapperEcho in so he can help test how it stands up against the original porter and haul some loads to the freight depot!

The conductor is like the captain of a ship. They are responsible for navigating, keeping the train on schedule, and often switching tracks when necessary. The engineers operate and maintain the engine but it’s the conductor that ultimately tells them what to do. In essence the conductor is the “ mind” of the train “conducting” the crew to keep the train moving and on time. Anytime you see a guy on a train looking at a pocket watch there’s a 90% chance he’s the conductor. Also the in game model is more reminiscent of a conductor.

From a retired Ship's Captain: The crew answeres to the Engineer. The Engineer was/is (in legal terms) "responsible entity" for the safe physical operation of the train. *The Engineer is the "captain".* The conductor is/was the "company man". He kept the business records of the train, cargo bills, crew pay, ticket revenues on passenger trains, etc. On a ship, this is the job of the Purser, not the Captain. Both the Purser and Conductor are "responsible entity" for the smooth business operation of the ship/train. The Conductor can tell the Engineer where the train needs to go next, but not when or how to get there. Conductor: "We need to get to Bright's freight yard to haul four goods cars to Phoenix". Engineer: "OK. We'll head that way as soon as the snow storm clears from the mountain pass".

Derailing on the loop like that is called a "string lining" derailment, where the cars essentially try to pull straight because of too many empty cars between loaded ones (or in this case a locomotive)
@jean-charleslavigne1298
@jean-charleslavigne1298 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I think its even worse if you are stopped and try to move forward in the middle of a curve. You have to push and pull gradually to balance the force around the curve or else the tension can pull the cars inside the curve and off the rails.
@V.Lane_volts
@V.Lane_volts 2 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert my self, but. If the dev added a feature where player can tighten the link and make the buffer spring loaded. So there is almost no slack when pulling the train and prevent derailment. I know this gonna be a heavy job on the physics simulation and going to promote lag to the game. But this feature is worth considering.
@3DPDK
@3DPDK 2 жыл бұрын
@@V.Lane_volts It's not the slack in the couplers that causes this kind of derailment. What S Thomas is describing is the tendency for the train to "want" to form a straight line, like pulling a string from both ends. This tendency ends up being a lateral, sideways force on the wheel trucks in a curve, perpendicular to the tracks. If the force exceeds the resistance force of the wheel flanges and weight of the car itself, the flanges hop over the rail towards that straight line. This is true both in real world and this game's physics. The only time the lateral force is not present is on straight track and when fully coasting downhill.

When you're working with another player, you can give car counts to how far they need to move up or back. So when @Dapper was switching and connecting the train, you could count down how many cars further he has to pull the train to clear the switch, or back up to couple to the cars, rather than "ok stop". So you'd call out "5 cars" ... "4 cars" ... and so on ... "1 car" ... "half car" ... "inches" ... "stop". Makes for less "STOP STOP STOP NOOOOO!"

The 0-4-2 porter should have better stability in addition to its longer range between however i think the devs said somewhere the starting porter(betsy) is using the stats of a stronger porter for now im not sure if they changed that . But if you want pulling power the gearned locomotives can pull just about anything but have a limited top speed The mogul balances speed and power. Also Trains actually are better off with more weight unlike cars as more weight means more traction. Also the engineer is the one who drives the train the conductor is the one who manages most other things but the conductor is the one in charge. there's also usually a brakeman who has to deal with all the individual car breaks and couplings. There also the fireman who keeps the fire going. Also this game is about American narrow gauge don't try to run trains that are too long stability on 3ft gauge is not the same as on standard 4ft 8 and a half inches. Use the new porter on longer routes with less acess fuel. i recomend doing a bit of research Each locomotive has a niche.

The eureka isn’t that bad. It has a very specific role in mind: high speed medium length trains on the flats. It isn’t going to climb big grades, I’d say 8 loaded cars, maybe 10 depending on the grades is it’s max, but what you sacrifice in pulling power, you gain in speed and stability. Depending on how your RR is setup in this game, it works great for shuttling logs between sawmill and logging camp on long, more or less flat terrain (nothing bigger than 2% ish)

7:20 In the world of trains, power isn't everything. Drag only really factors in at determining top speed. There is another, arguably more important stat, that is tractive power. Basically, the more weight you have on a wheel, the more power it can transfer to the rails. In a head to head test, weight would actually help. The reason Betsy 2 lost is the extra set of wheels it has. The extra set of wheels reduce weight, and therefore traction on the remaining driving wheels. Now the reason a train might sacrifice tractive power this way is to increase stability. At high speed, the extra wheels help keep guide the train around turns, and keep the train smooth and stable in straights. The two or three main trains of thought (see what I did there?) when it comes to trains is tractive power vs stability. More tractive power will allow more weight to be carried over all, or more in more extreme examples (around bends, up hill, etc.) where higher stability will allow higher speed travel over smooth and rough rail alike.

You had mentioned in this vid about trains having a locomotive in the middle of the train. That is done more for braking and air pressure than helping to push or pull. Modern trains using air brakes get their air from the locomotives. If you have a really long train, by the time the air gets to the rear of the train the air pressure drops. Having a locomotive in the middle helps to maintain an even air pressure throughout the train because that locomotive can build air using its air compressor. Fun video, enjoyed it. 👍

id be a good idea kan to run the engines back to back like 2 engines on a freight locomotive so you can have more speed and power, or you could do a push pull config for youre train like in the vid

The engineer/driver is the guy who actually operates the train, monitors all the dials and valves and levers, and prevents derailments and boiler explosions. The conductor is a sharp-dressed Company man. He's the safety officer and the numbers guy. He may or may not have personal engineering experience, but his job is pretty much everything _except_ the engine. He supervises loading and unloading of cargo; buys, sells, and verifies passenger tickets and tends to other passenger needs; does any necessary paperwork, and basically acts on behalf of the Company ensuring that the train runs on-time and according to safety regulations. For shunting, the conductor is the one who arranged to have the cars and wagons reserved for you beforehand, and he would also signal to the driver with flags, lanterns, a loud whistle, his hands, or his voice whenever the train was running in reverse. Basically, the engineer's job is to get you where you're going, and the conductor's job is to make sure you're alive, turning a profit, and projecting a positive image of "the Company" when you do so. 39:50 Bad time for a whistle test. The whistle is steam-powered too, so low boiler pressure means weaker whistles.

Fun fact: The longest train in the history of the United States Railroad was a 500 car consist, loaded with coal, and pulled by six diesel locomotives. On November 15, 1967, the Norfolk & Western Railway ran a consist of 500 coal cars, plus caboose, and powered by six 3600 horsepower diesels three in front and three in the middle. This train stretched for roughly 4.06 miles (6.53km) and was pulled a total of 159 miles from Iaeger, West Virginia to Portsmouth, Ohio. This train was created as a way to test the possible train lengths and weights as well as test possible radio communication between teamed locomotives. The test was a success despite intermittent radio signal loss between the two locomotive teams and a broken coupling knuckle that snapped open at startup after a crew change at Williamson, West Virginia.

12:23 on some express routes in Britain, steam locomotives had a little retractable scoop at the bottom, similar to a water bomber (e.g. Canadair CL-415). There were also water troughs in the middle of the track at certain points along the route, so when the locomotive was over these troughs the scoop would be lowered and the water refilled.

To put it simply, the engineer drives the engine, the fireman shovels the coal into the firebox and the conductor coordinates the crew's activities and ensures that passengers are safe.

I work for a railroad and I am a conductor. The conductor is in charge of the train and the engineer operates the locomotive. The conductor works on the ground giving the engineer direction and distance to a hook, spotting cars at industries or fixing issues with the train in route. Also what you guys were doing with an engine at the rear is called a man helper and communication is key with maned helpers, the engineer on the lead unit tells the engineer at the rear what to do. When you pull cars off the rail due draft forces, pulling too hard from the front and too slow at the rear, it's called a string line derail. You can also derail due to buff forces which is pushing too hard from the rear and too slow on the head end. Also if you have any questions let me know, I can answer almost anything involving switching moves including some tips I've learned over the years or just general railroad terminology. Engineers are also called hog heads.

kAN & Dapper love the super long train set, don't know if anyone said this already but like real railroad practice you can set car brakes on your train to stretch out the tension in the train to keep it from derailing at such a long length.

kinda relates to my previous comment that was the reason railway crews would run from the caboose to locomotive, certain whistle calls would tell the crew which cars needed brake and how much.

Try the Betsy 2 at the rear of the cars and push them up the incline. Thats how some Railroads do it around the world. Also an engineer is the driver and conductor is the person operating points and coupling / uncoupling cars

Engineer drives, brakemen do the coupling/uncoupling and set switches, conductor is the guy who is in charge of the whole train, like the paperwork and money stuff (like accounting for how many cars and/or the quantity of stuff shipped) but doesn't drive.

I don't know if it's true in real life, or true in the game -- but I remember on old Microsoft Train Simulator, you need to use the cylinder cocks. You open them as you're accelerating and it helps with torque, and you leave them on until you've gotten a little bit of speed. You should try that on this game.
@kuhljager2429
@kuhljager2429 2 жыл бұрын
Opening the cylinder cocks is how you blow condensate out of the pistons before using the locomotive. Water doesn't compress, and when you try to make it compress, things then to get...... sporty

For loading maybe put some kind of marker along the rail to mark the proper stopping position for loading wagon you cant see . that way you can align the marker with one of the junction between wagons you can see and that will align the wagon at the station

safer to transport a long train with 2 locomotives is if the train is divided into 3 parts and the locomotives are between them, thus reducing the load

This entire episode I got Dumbo vibes. In particular the Casey Jr. scene where, as you described it, the entire train gives him slack then just KICKS him forward!!!!!! That also just reminded me you missed a chance at calling your second porter Betsy Jr. I'm just imagining the mill owners are just like "WHAT THE HECK!? YOU USUALLY DO LIKE......TEN CARS WHERE DID YOU GET ALL THESE!?"

Porter 1 vs 2 only difference (wheels porter 1) 0-4-0 and 1 wood stack (Wheels porter 2) 0-4-2 and 2 wood stacks (The should add a wood count in the buy menu so you can plan your routes around that)
