Created by Ben Hall and Kent Smith from Knoxville, Tennessee, "Buying In: The Music of Vince Guaraldi" won 1st in State and placed in the top ten nationally for the National History Day competition in the category of "Senior Group Documentary." Ben and Kent are in the class of 2017 at the L&N STEM Academy of Knoxville.

I remember "A Charlie Brown Christmas" debut like it was yesterday. It made me want to be a jazz bass player.... Vince's tunes are still as fresh as they were back in 1965. RIP Vince and thanks!

I was around 10 at the time I watched the Charlie Brown Christmas special on TV. I remember that the music that accompanied the show seemed natural and thinking through the music seemed the way it should be. I did not realize that the music was jazz at its finest. It was Vince's compositions that drove me to the piano and playing jazz.

I think his fellow jazz musician critics were jealous because Vince was talented enough to make money off his craft . He was damn good .He just got recognized for it more than others. And his deal with Peanuts specials opened jazz up to younger audiences

Once music like jazz is accepted by the masses the critics bemoan the commercial acceptance. Such nonsense. Guaraldi did very well even before Peanuts (Cast Your Fate To The Wind) and the Charlie Brown association skyrocketed his career. Nothing wrong with that.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area. I used to get up early in the morning to watch Vince Guaraldi on the local CBS affiliate when I was in elementary school. I think the show was called The Hungry Eye like the night club. I've been a huge fan every since.

I find it sad that Vince Guaraldi is looked down on by some people in jazz circles because he scored the Peanuts specials. Personally, I think his music added something special to them. Peanuts is a rather sophisticated comic strip, and his scores reflected that. Listening to his music on those classics led me into loving jazz as an adult.

I dare say, were it not for Vince Guaraldi, I would not have been able to appreciate Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bud Powell, Horace Silver, Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, John Lewis, Lyle Mays, Dave Brubeck, Keith Jarrett, George Winston, Earl Hines, Count Basie, Jess Stacy, Teddy Wilson, McCoy Tyner...and the incomparable Theolonius Monk and Duke Ellington the way I have and still do with all their different approaches to the piano that, regardless of circumstances, produced all that great piano jazz both on their own and in collaboration with others (i.e. Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Milt Jackson, Paul Desmond, Pat Metheny, Bola Sete and many others too numerous to mention). But Vince and his combos, whether working on the Peanuts specials or other albums, were the gateway music.

Thank you for this video. I'm one of the "born in the 50's child of the 60's" fans whom Guaraldi's music influenced. Loved it then, love it now, it had a big impact on me as a musician.

Fell in love with “CYFTTW” in ‘63 at age 13…just about the time the Beatles hit the US, too. Wonderful time for my teenage self…such a spectrum of music to explore! Thanks, Vince, for introducing me to jazz…and thank the Interwebs for letting me uncover so many wonderful, creative jazz artists who I still listen to daily!

I saw this on my black & white TV when I was 16 years old in 1965. I still watch it every year, more than once. The story, the animation, the music and the message are the perfect recipe for feeling warm and fuzzy about love and family. I became a jazz drummer largely because of this and Jerry Granelli was the perfect drummer for the music. Like Woodstock, this could never be recreated.

outstanding…i remember ‘Cast Your Fate to the Wind’ the way the rest of my peers did the Beatles that year; none of them had any inkling who the Sounds Orchestral were and wondered what was wrong with me listening to them and this Trane fellow over ‘She Loves You’; now, of course, they are all authorities on jazz in general and Vince in particular, but still haven’t quite caught on to this Tjader fellow over dreck like Miami Sound Machine and Julio Inglesias; and so it goes..

This is my year for somewhat of an obsession with the music and life of Vince Guaraldi. I’m reading the big biography which is excellent. I’m listening to tons of his music, and fixing to learn The Great Pumpkin Waltz, The Charlie Brown Theme, and then Linus & Lucy, through the The Definitive Vince Guaraldi transcriptions. So grateful to be able to streams tons of versions of so many of his great tunes. His awesome Fly Me To The Moon is an absolute masterclass in jazz piano. The bonus is that he grew up and lived just an hour south of where I live - San Francisco. I feel like I live in somewhat of his backyard. He was also a friend of The Grateful Dead, and even appears in the ‘family photo’ on the back of their late 60’s album Aoxomoxoa!!! Vince is the man. I’m totally in love!! Thank you Vince!!!

Guaraldi was initially recruited to do the music for the Peanuts documentary "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", which no network picked up. The Christmas special came later.

Musically, the guy was awesome. I think he's even cooler that he scored a mainstream cartoon for kids, knowing better than most he'd be ridiculed by the snobbish jazz community.

Hearing many artists were influenced by Vince’s work (which of course makes sense) I immediately thought of George Winston and how I hear Vince’s style in his music. I can’t believe at 7:54 he was mentioned.
