I’ve been in a No Buy Year since August. The strategy I have been employing is to remind myself every time I want a new product desperately that thus far, no makeup or skincare product has changed my life the way that I thought it would. No product is actually all that innovative or new and what I have gets the job done just fine.

I went psycho buying a bunch of expensive eyeshadow palettes (Pat McGrath, Viseart Pro palette for $200), etc - because I kept telling myself THIS is the palette that will be a game changer and make me feel good about myself. In the end, I only used the palettes a couple of time and then went back to the ones I actually liked.

Oh my… I do that too! When I want to put myself into debt buying wonderfully beautiful clothes I reorganize my closet. I have lost 70lbs since July so my collection of lovely pieces has been edited several times recently. Whenever I see things online that I must have or I’ll perish from wanting, I reorganize. It helps me remember that I have a beautiful wardrobe. I have wonderful fancy clothes, soft comfy casuals, and very smart business attire. Not to mention a luxurious robe and slippers and a robust collection of pajamas and lounge wear. Undergarments so dainty and sexy that any woman would would feel blessed. That’s how I remind myself that I do not want to spend. Edit to say that I am also wearing a very new and comfortable body. So my clothes are so much fun. Hannah, I used to hang all my sweaters to get clarity on what I own but in the end hanging them really stretched and misshaped all my beautiful knits. It’s a painful lesson. Better to fold them. Something to keep in mind when you organize your closet.
@emmy8526 Жыл бұрын
I find I can get away with hanging knits (if they’re not loosely woven or heavy) by using slightly wider black plastic hangers that come with grey rubber pads on the shoulders. It helps keeps the sweaters from sliding or developing dents. Also good for jackets, blazers and coats. I wouldn’t normally advise buying that much plastic, but I use them year round, they extend the life of my clothes and they’ve lasted well. Folding sweaters is great, but the creases can limit wearing right off the shelf, and I don’t like ironing anything but thin knits if I can help it as it smooshes the weave, to use a technical term, lol.
@jenniferkerr5714 Жыл бұрын

You can flip the arms of the sweater up over the shoulders on a good, grippy hanger, and it takes some strain off of the sholder seams. Heavier cotton and thinner wool knits will still probably stretch out over time but if they are worn a lot it doesn't cause a lot of issues for me.

This is actually a really brilliant video for me to have watched. Thank you Hannah. I have actual big holes in my wardrobe. I know they exist and they genuinely make it hard for me to effectively use the clothes I have sometimes. What I’ve desperately needed to do for a while was to wash everything and go drawer by drawer and aggressively purge. Not to get rid of the stuff I love, but to expose the gaps so I can make a list of the stuff that actually does need replaced and start doing research on replacements so that I am making measured, budgeted, sensible monetary decisions. I am now inspired. Thank you Hannah.
@erinodonnell386 Жыл бұрын
@@sarahscott2114 I’m not sure if you’ve been working from home for a while or not but I’ve had that same confusion when I’ve dealt with new situations. What helps me is to think about what I am actually looking for. What purpose it will serve (that things I already have wouldn’t) and how can I maximize itsb usefulness to me. Really take your time and consider it in the context of the wardrobe you already have and the occasions you regularly feel that gap. I like to have a small wardrobe full of carefully curated pieces that are exactly what I want them to be, sometimes that means some of them are relatively expensive so I feel you there. Right now my issue is that I went through a significant life change over the past couple years and I worry that I will need the pieces in my wardrobe that now do not serve me. So they have stuck around and cluttered everything up.
@faerynnnn Жыл бұрын
I don't know if y'all will see this or not, but a shift in approach to this process that has REALLY helped me, is that instead of going through my wardrobe looking for pieces I don't wear/am ready to part with, I go through and pull out all of my absolute FAVORITE items that I wear regularly, and put those aside as "keeps," and everything else is up for getting chopped. I found it sooo helpful because it helped me move from "well I maybe I can be the person who wears this" to "I am a person who wears these." It was also really helpful because then I could see what I gravitated to naturally, and the things I wore consistently. That made it so much easier to make choices about what pieces to add in the future, because I knew 1) if it went with a bunch of those things it would be easy to incorporate, and 2) if I own and love something that fits in a similar way/makes me feel a similar way, I will most likely wear that item a lot too.

Hi Hannah, I can totally relate to your love for knits. I am a knitter and always struggle with buying wool in sweater quantities (because I can buy faster than I can knit and NEED). But I have one tip for you regarding extending the longevity of your sweaters. Especially big knits like oversized sweaters can stretch out over time, when left hanging. The weight of the wool stretches out the stitches at the shoulder and neckline. You can use it for your advantage, if a sweater is too short, otherwise it's better to store them laying with a lavender sachet (moths 🦗). Greetings from Germany, Ingrid
@carolinemercer9779 Жыл бұрын
Yes I was looking for this comment!! Especially since she’s looking at knits as long term additions to her wardrobe, it’s very important to store them correctly I am also struggling with the desire to buy way too much yarn. I can feasibly knit 1 sweater a month so I need to stop buying so much yarn dang it
@jens1132 Жыл бұрын
I too was looking for this comment, as I know from shopping that any sweaters (but especially chunky heavy ones) stretch on hangers. And so I was puzzled by someone who said she’s buying sweaters for the longterm but abusing them by hanging them?!

And also, wool does need more frequent cleanings. I had a beautiful wool sweater when I was younger and I didn’t wash it before I put it away for the warmer seasons. When I pulled it out in the Fall the wool had basically rotted in the armpit areas. It was ruined.
@naomifarlow5220 Жыл бұрын
You are both right actually. Wool doesn't need to be washed with every wear, especially if it wasn't worn next to skin, as it has self cleaning properties. However you must always wash wool before it is stored. Unwashed stored wool can suffer damage and attract pests. I hope this helps.

I did the same thing as you with Babaa about 5 years back when I discovered the Tradlands brand of button down flannel and cotton shirts. They are beautifully well made pieces (think double top stitching and an extra buttonhole to prevent that dreaded gape). Once my first shirt arrived I was so completely smitten I acquired roughly 8 shirts in different fabrics and sleeve length but finally had to put the brakes on when I realized I may have overdone it. I absolutely do not regret a single purchase but enough really is enough and these well made shirts truly will last a lifetime. I had Christmas money to burn and more time on my hands because I was off work for about 10 days, reading every single night before bed for a few hours. Which is WAY more than I used to read, embarrassingly. But then when I got home from my vacation, I wanted to buy more books. Suddenly I was reading book reviews and watching Booktube and looking for books to actively want. I was planning bookstore trips that I couldn't afford in my budget even if I got them secondhand. I was planning on asking for nothing but books for my birthday. And I had my lightbulb moment, just go to the effing library and get a library card, duh. With washing knitwear, if your washing machine has a spin only (not rinse and spin) cycle, I really recommend using it after washing to significantly reduce the drying time, whether you wash the garment by hand or in the washing machine. Use the setting with highest number of spins, so it is more like a centrifuge, and will spin out lots of the water. After that lay it out flat to dry in shape as normal. I was skeptical to try it, but a lot of big knitwear designers recommend it (I'm a knitter), and it's been a game-changer for me!

The thing is, although the boots were SUCH a good discount, they weren't the exact style I wanted. However, the style I bought had a suede detail which I totally knew wouldn't stand up long term to the elements but I bought 'em anyway...only the transaction was cancelled because they ran out of stock and couldn't fulfil the order (not the brand's fault but the stockist). So I was serendipitously saved from myself - but your video here has armed me for the future when the fates may be less benevolent!

Excellent talk, Hannah, and congrats on overcoming those inclinations to buy. My problem is sewing patterns and, to a lesser extent, fabric. You are so correct about taking stock of current inventory of the item we want to buy! Every time I reorganize my patterns I remind myself that I don’t need anymore. Well, there was a pattern sale a few days ago and I managed to resist buying a dress pattern I was visualizing sewing and wearing (beautifully, of course). As I was driving in the neighborhood of the pattern sale, I talked to myself out loud about all the other patterns I want to sew that I already own, and also reminded myself that I have several unfinished projects at the moment, needing my attention more than this new dress pattern. I also remembered what the told myself the last time I reorganized my patterns... I have enough for two lifetimes! The urge to buy another pattern did pass after considering these things. As I write this I even feel relieved that I don’t have yet another one to file away. The marketers of beautiful items are skilled at their jobs! Thank you for helping us develop our skills of resistance! I love the default “no” ... I will use it!!

I love Ugg boots and I also love a pale olive color. This year the company came out w/pale olive Ugg boots for $170. I wanted them so bad and I still do, even though I own 3 other pairs. What I did to talk myself out of purchasing them, was to look in my closet at all of my clothes & the outfits I put together and see if I would choose the olive color Uggs or my black, gray or brown Uggs. My conclusion was that even if I would pull out the olive color, my gray, black or brown Uggs would match just as good & maybe even better. I still want them, but I don’t want to have to spend that much money right now. I have this quirk about me, that when I like something a lot, I want all the colors. I totally understand u Hannah. You’ve helped me a lot & I hope this example will serve u in some way. ❤️

I just replaced some bras. I have not purchased bras in several years and the ones I had (and I had about 6) were all well worn and starting to not shape me/fit in a comfortable way as they were stretched out. I decided I only need 3 bras (with my weekly laundry routine) and looked online for neutral colors that would match my skintone so they could go under any color including sheer or white tops. I have since purchased and received my new bras and out of the 3 only one of them is not exactly what I hoped but I can still make it work. The old bras I got rid of and I have to say my drawer looks so pretty now when I open it up and the lovely new bras are laid out there waiting for me, and I know I can get thru the day without having to adjust and fidget with my bra! I appreciate that you took into account how many you had in total and realized you didn't need any. I love the wishlist idea for the clothing you want but don't "need" as most of the time those short term desires do go away. Perhaps ask for the items for a birthday present?

I did that with my knits today and fell in love again with what I already have - I also tried every single one on which helped 💕 my most problematic one is handbags and sales so my plan is to stop browsing when I’m bored and redirect my attention to what I already have . My confession 🛑I also over indulged myself on those delicious Babaa sweaters. Also wear them all and plan to for the rest of my life! I have gone a good several months without purchasing….but somehow stumbled this morning on Poshmark and purchased no13 Arce new condition for a deal. Even though I own the color in the no17 😅However… the guilt has been at my throat, so much so I listed one of my beloveds to hopefully compensate for my impulsiveness. This video comes to me at the right time as a sign to back off the Babaa train… Enjoy, wear, and cherish what I already own and stop coveting new releases like the Babaa blanket! Is it possible?😅 Also I would love to see a video on your collection and how you care for them ❤ Edit: How could I forget to mention you look stunning in the blue!

I think laundry is big especially for a minimal wardrobe. We own a huge washing machine as it is the most sustainable one regarding environment and energy costs. So we "need" a lot of dirty items to fill it and justify using it. I learned to compromise on my outfits and to rewear clothes (after I hang them in the dampy bathroom or spotclean them). I do handwash my bras as they are delicate (silks, lace ...) therefore I do not need a lot of them.

I actually have been using the no method for so long in my life that I am in the opposite side not letting myself enjoy a single spontaneous purchase, I overthink about everything and sometimes an item stays in my wishlist for 2 years even though I really want and would get so much out of it. I am super afraid of being impulsive, regretting something, overindulging and going beyond my savings (which never happened and it’s quite impossible due to this mindset I’ve just described). But I’m tired of repressing myself to this level so I’m searching healthy ways to navigate through this journey and your channel have been a blessing to me showing all these ways I can enjoy beautiful things and pleasure in balanced ways. I know your tips are for people that usually pass the limits, but it’s really helping me to make the other way. I cannot describe how much these are becoming my favorite videos ever, thank you so much!

I'm currently struggling with balancing my internal "no, trying to save money" with "but I'll love it and use the hell out it" desires for a chartreuse sweater from aritzia and western-inspired boots from able. Sigh! On a separate note, watching your videos has reignited my passion for makeup! I have a very similar completion to you and always struggled with base products. Although we have totally different makeup colors (I go for vampy deep lips, berry tones, rosy pinks, and blue-toned reds) your journey of finding the right foundation shade has made me finally realize I'm fair neutral hinting more on the cool side. Thank you so much for your thoughtful content!

This is such a helpful video for me on my no buy year. I know you aren’t technically on a no buy but hearing how you feel better after saying no even when you can buy is really comforting to me. I overlap a lot in the areas of interest (looking at you, knitwear), and it’s so tempting to try and make exceptions or fit things into my rules. But instead, I did a huge purge and reorganization of my closet this past weekend and I’m absolutely loving the results. Thank you Hannah!

I have a serious Etsy art problem- I'll scroll through artists pages as if its social media and fill my basket. I always justified these purchases as ok because I'm supporting small local artists- but I am really trying to cut back on them this year. Last weekend when I got the urge to scroll and shop I instead looked at all the art I had that I hadn't put up yet (need to find a frame, haven't decided on where it'll go, forgotten about it etc), the frames I'd collected from charity shops, and what was already on the walls. I spent the whole day changing what was in which frame, deciding to hang some stuff with washi tape just to get it up, and basically re-curating all of the art around my home. It was so much fun and I feel so happy I'm the space now!! The prices I'd gotten used to feel fresh and new in new spaces and frames and I'm so glad I finally got up some bits I've had put away for ages

My approach for this year is to not add any sweaters to my closet unless I’ve knit themself - it’s a hobby that takes me awhile because I only like to work on one project at a time, feels intentional for me from a sustainability standpoint, and is overall cheaper than buying Babaa 😅 thank you for this wonderful reminder!

I had to call my husband and explain that I wanted to this this cute particular pant and he gently reminded me of my journey to minimal live and that I really have enough clothes or pants 😃I am so glad he did that , and after a week I have forgotten that pant. So far I have not been tempted to buy! Yay! Thank you for your videos and validating that I am not the only one feel that way!

Buying less..... I'm doing meh so far. Luckily most of the stuff I want is actually very affordable, like the new e.l.f. color corrector. I was like, why am I beating myself up about $4? I realized, it's more about knowing that the L.A.Girl color corrector I already have could last me literally another year, maybe even two! That is something frustrating about makeup. Most products last sooooo long, it's like you feel sentenced to avoid buying anything else because what you already have could last so long. And usually it's not considered a DOWNSIDE to get a long usage period out of the products you buy, but there's something about it that's oddly toxic in a way I can't quite sum up. You are just left with a nagging knowing that you don't NEED more of what you have, yet you want to try different brands and formulas, and have the FUN of buying something that is a hobby of yours.

I was trying to talk myself into buying new brow pencils because my favs are almost done. I took out all the pencils & other brow products I own & started using those. I found that I actually like the other non fav products. They definitely do the job & in reality I probably won't need a new brow product for at least the next 12 mos if I'm being completely honest with myself. Which I think what this exercise really is about. Being honest, truly honest & realizing that no, you do not "need" anything most of the time! 😏🙌

I’m not brave enough to wash wool in the washing machine BUT I use Soak hand wash soap. It’s really easy to use - you just soak your wool in it for 20 minutes then remove the water. The soap evaporates so you don’t have to rinse it, which for me is the worst part.

I gotta say I bought a babaa sweater a year or two ago, washed according to the care instructions and its dye came out streaky. It was the no 18 cardigan in natural, an off white. I might have been able to bleach it effectively, but it wasn’t a white initially and I wasn’t going for a white look. Just word to the wise for the cotton cardigans in that color-that you will definitely have to wash at some point because the light color will get dirty. I’d have dry cleaned if I’d know better, but if I had to do it again I wouldn’t have bought it in the first place.

I’m on a low/no buy for January. The hardest part is when something goes on sale, or clearance. My husband was my stop guard in this case. He’s like “you’re trying to do a no buy, give it a few minutes.” At first I was a little irked that he’d reminded me of my commitment to myself, but when I went back to the website I didn’t feel the same impulse. Never in my life that I think that eyeshadow palettes could become both a point of joy and a burden for me, as I have begun a hobby and then fallen into the consumeristic rabbit hole it can lead to! However, I have found that when I really want a new release but don’t immediately get it, the process of waiting several weeks or months dims the appeal of that item. Particularly as new things come on scene and I can step back, assess and compare with a clearer head. I love the wishlist idea as well as one commenter’s suggestion of taking a screen shot! Thank you for a well thought-out video, Hannah!

From you I have learned that „duping the vibes“ is a way to go. Recently, whenever I see a trend in which I would love to participate - I immediately turn to what I already have. Yesterday I have seen short video from Andrea Ali, applying pink liquid blush to cheeks, brow bones and lips which worked magic to her face. I went to video description to check out that product, then I realized that with pink lipstick I can do the same. And I have Chanel rouge coco (462 romy) which also works magic. But even if I did not have lipstick, I could do all that with a powder blush in pink. Thank you for spreading this mindset

What helps me sometimes from Shopping: when I want an item, I often have a special situation in m head, just like a film scene. It’s a FEELING, an idea, a song… then I try to imagine the whole scene with clothes I already have. Often I realise that it’s not the clothes I want…

My husband is working 12 hours a day. I am getting over pneumonia and can start looking for a job again. I have not had a job for six months and I was doing pretty good about saying no.Plus I have not left my house in a month since I have been sick. I am trying to not go out since it is cold so I don't get sick again. I had Sepsis in June and I keep getting sick so I have limited my time out of my house. I have watch myself because I know I have been depressed and buying things is not going to make me feel better. I do need to buy bras though. I usually can buy one and get one half price. I will only buy two bras. I think I am going to have to limit myself watching make up videos. I have a goal of getting some stuff paid off in seven years. My husband can retire then and I don't want to have so many bills. I liked to travel with my husband. I do need to give myself grace though. I am realizing my triggers and not acting on them. I'm sooo interested in seeing your modest but likely beautiful fountain pen and ink collection. I'm on a stationery no buy this year, and so far so good though I nearly stocked up on greeting cards and notebooks from a local gift shop that's closing. My rules are 1) replacement purchases are okay if I have absolutely nothing in my existing stash that cannot do the same job and 2) buying postage stamps for outgoing snail mail is acceptable. I rearranged my supplies so that I can better see all that I have, which has helped so much already in cutting my desire for more things.

I'm staying humble and started with a no buy January. We'll see if I decide to alternate buy and no buy periods. When I allow myself to do something, sometimes I eventually don't cave in. Just because I feel reassured that if I want I can, then I don't. However this month, only the automatic no has successfully saved me from breaking my vow multiple times 😂 Crazy how we get to feel an actual urge, with a rash of adrenaline and the whole fight or flight situation array of chemical reactions. I'm trying to really change my spending habits this year and videos like this are so helpful! Because of my new year's goals to read and exercise more I'm very tempted to buy books and activewear at the moment... I already have almost 50 unread books on my shelf so I def do not need more! But I did allow myself to restock my shampoo and buy a tote bag (which I'd been eyeing for 2+ months and was on sale). Skincare is also an eternal temptation... sorting through and reorganising all of my skincare definitely helps curb the craving for more. I've made a big wishlist excel sheet, I find plugging things into the wishlist and waiting does help the initial flare of excitement settle down. Tbh most of the things I put on my wishlist I end up forgetting about, and if they stick around in my mind, then they tend to be worth buying

I have to come back to this video to process my thoughts on my shopping behaviour. I spent more on clothes in the last few months than in the last 10 years. Which is ok. I spent my early and mid twenties at university with not much to spare and no real focus on my clothes. I wore most of my stuff for years and years until it basically desintegrated from my body. I finished university 2 years ago, started a job and spent most of my income since then paying off my student debt, buying a car, moving to a different city, buying furniture... The last few months I started to have money for myself for the first time in my life and my wardrobe was in need of a refreshment. Your videos about matching ones wardrobe to ones lifestyle helped a lot. I studied Geology but now I work in an office setting and gained some weight - my wardrobe was more a source of stress than a way to elevate my day to day life. And I discovered Babáa and Lucy and Yak. My Babaá needs/wants are satisfied, but L&Y has me nearly addicted. So I will probably start with a cold turkey no buy on clothes. Definitely for the next 6 months until the end of January. Exceptions: underwear (bras and pantys), a winter coat and a dress if I am invited to a wedding. Shoes are excluded from this no buy. They are not a tempting category for me. Starting tomorrow I will begin a new "full rotation" through my wardrobe. Every outfit has to include at least one item of clothing that I did not wear in this rotation. Until I wore every single item. Basically the opposite of a capsule wardrobe. Last time I did this it was very inspiring and helped me to appreciate my beautiful things. Quite the wall of text... I am so grateful for this channel and for all the food for thoughts I get here. Thank you Hannah! PS: the part in your video about not buying something in another colour hits very close to home😅 I have 3 items in a second colour eatch and in every case I have a favourite... And in every case the favourite is the thing I initially watched (colour or size wise). The first choice was out of stock, I bought the second choice and liked it. Then the first choice comes back in stock, I buy it and love it more...

It’s so nice hearing someone talk about talking yourself out of shopping. A lot of the internet is hauls and fresh fits so this is super refreshing and relatable! I’m more motivated to keep going on my thoughtful buy less journey. I loaded my various carts with a totally irresponsible almost 2k worth of goodies and the strategies that I used were 1) let it sit 2) cull based on my boyfriends opinions 3) cull based on fabric quality 4) let it sit and now it’s still sitting and it’s exactly like you’re last point. That sudden urge when you first find items is a real killer. $0 spent still :)

A friend recently shared a post with me that said, basically, that for as long as we perceive happiness as something we need to *get*, or achieve, or find, or chase, it will never be where we are. And that's something I've taken to heart lately, and I'm really examining opportunities to acknowledge what happiness is right where I already am--asking myself what is "other" to me, or separate from me, and whether that's reality or just my perspective. So to hear you say, "My body is already clothed and comfortable, I already have what I need to look chic," etc, really hit home with me. Brava to you; I'm so glad to have seen this reminder to stay the course. Carry on.
