I know someone who got her daughter a phone at 2 years old, because the parents were separated (dad was abusive to the mom), and the dad would call the mom under the guise of wanting to speak to his daughter but he would start yelling and fighting at the mom. She finally got fed up and told the dad he could call the daughter directly and she would no longer pick up if he called her (she wanted all communication in writing for legal reasons)

My first phone was a Razor when I was 9 because my mom was on a trip and my dad worked before I left or got home from school so they needed to be sure I could reach them in any emergency. I think its great you're giving them phones but also being responsible about it and teaching them responsibility at the same time! Plus, you don't have to justify any of your decisions to the internet!

I think kids who go back and forth between two houses should have a phone. It helps the child be able to call the other if they feel unsafe or there’s an emergency. Especially in the situation of your ex that is the dad of Landen and the twins. I think nine is a bit young but in the situations you’re talking about I have to agree.

@@ashlynalderette2299 if this is something you really want, or need as it sounds like, try talking to your parents. Talk to them about prepaid phones and maybe doing something to help pay for it. Like maybe do some babysitting for family or family friends. Walk your neighbors dogs, do some extra chores. Show them that you mean business. Obviously I can't tell you what to do as I'm not your parent. I'm just giving you some suggestions. I raised my older sister's kids and they had to have phones because they had health issues. But when they were old enough, they paid their share of the bill. The things I suggested were what my niece did. My nephew helped our neighbor keep her house since she was somewhat mobility impaired. Again, these are just suggestions. But I'd start with talking to your parents and expressing what your concerns are with not having your own phone.

Kids these days are growing up in the era of technology and social media. The rules we had growing up don’t really apply now. I feel like as long as you’re being safe, sensible, practical and logical with your parenting decisions, you can do whatever applies to your family and your own personal family situations. I completely get it! My nephew was 8 when we gave him a phone, as he gets on a public bus, alone, to come home. The bus drivers look after him, but its so he always has a way to contact us if he needs to. Then there is when hes at his dads, they don't wont call his mum if anything is wrong, so this way, he can call her if he needs her. Its about safety and having kids have access to their parents when they find themselves in situations that they need their mum or dad.

I’m a single Mum of a now 16 year old. I got my boy a phone when he was 12 because that was when he had to start catching the bus to and from school because I had to work. I 110% understand wanting communication with my kid/s when they are in a situation that you’d like to be able to contact them. I was 8 when I got my first phone. Story time: Some days after school I would go to my Grandma’s because neither of my parents would be home when I got out of school (I would ride a different bus than my usual to her house). One particular day, my mom told me she wasn’t sure or not yet whether I would have to go to my grandma’s or not. She told me that if I wasn’t told different by the school, to ride the bus to my house. No one came over the intercom telling me to go to my grandma’s (my mom had called to tell them I was riding the bus to my grandma’s that day and to let me know). So I rode the bus home. I got there and there was no one there. I kept knocking on the door and what not and I was crying and scared. Not only was I home alone, but I couldn’t even get in, I was locked out. After awhile of me being outside, locked out, my grandma showed up. (After I never showed up at her house, she called my mom, and my mom said she called the school. Neither of them knew what happened, so my grandma decided to come to the house to get me, since she figured I was there.) After that, I got a phone so nothing like that would ever happen again and my mom could let me know herself if plans changed or which bus to ride. It was just a oval-shaped Samsung, that you had to turn and pull the keyboard out to text or call or whatever, but it had Oregon Trail, and Tetris on there, so it gave me something to play sometimes, and it was a way of contacting my family.

You should get KZbin kids for your kids it only has kid stuff anytime they get a notification from there phone it goes straight to your phone and if just say you kids typed something that is bad for kids or not good for kids or has swear words it won’t show those videos it is a great app you should try it

I totally agree with kids getting phones now a days. Most people don’t have landlines… so your child needs to communicate with you someway somehow. Mine is 11, she babysits and she’s alone at home sometimes. Love knowing that I can reach her at anytime. Also when she’s at her dads, I can contact her directly. I also like the fact that she knows she can reach me at anytime.

I got my first phone when I was 9, due to my parents splitting when I was late 7. It was a Samsung, but there was minimal apps on it, and when I had upgrades we installed parental control apps on to the phones. Obviously, I’m 16 now so don’t have parental controls anymore, but I completely agree with 9 being a good age for a basic first phone (I wouldn’t say Apple as a first phone, but that’s to preference of my own experiences, I use Apple now). I think 9 is a good age for a basic first phone regardless of wether your parents are separated or not. Good on you Jess!

I totally understand! I was only in 4th going into 5th when I got my first phone, please don't hate, the reason is that I was going to spend the whole summer in Florida without my parents! So I was flying over alone and spent the summer with my grandparents. My parents are not bad parents for allowing this, it was 100% safe. All of the employees were so caring and nice! I’m 11, and my parents got me a phone as well and they still, don’t let me get any social media’s but KZbin and some apps, they still track me, and I have to let them take it at any time and look through it. This is for their safety you shouldn’t have to explain yourself Jess, it’s your way of parenting. No one should be able to judge you for your ways. With apple watches they have a setting where you are the primary holder of the account and you have the control over the watch (as a family member ) so you can put limits etc, restrictions, school time etc and it also keeps track of their activity with the newest apple watches like the SE

I'm from Europe and my parents bought me a phone when I was 7. it's perfectly normal here, the children usually go to and from school alone and move independently... so I understand your situation :)

girl you don’t need to explain yourself , I got my first phone at 8 and that was because I needed it for school since I would go on the bus, ignore the hate because it’s not their business on what you should do / buy your kids.

I am 14 going into high school in September and I got my first phone in 6th grade on Christmas. My younger sisters that are twins got their first phones at the end of 5th grade they are starting 6th grade in September just like Lilia. I agree with you jess times are different now and you should be able to keep in contact with your kids if they're not with you all the time. good luck with that phone bill!!!!!!!

i would say my kids if i had any now they would be allowed to have insta at around 13, tiktok at 15, and twitter at 15/16 but they all need to be private and only allow family/friends to follow them
