Have done it both ways several times. Best value is a very clean, low hour used bike. I bought one this spring for $3k less than the guy paid...had 1.4 hours on it. That said, buying used can be a giant PITA and can take a surprising amount of time. During covid it was not worth it at all.

Buy a new one on sale at the end of the season. After watching my buddies abuse their bikes and then selling them to unsuspecting victims, I stay away from used bikes.

Bought my YZ250X brand new because at the time people wanted close to new price for used ones and I knew I was going to keep it forever so I decided to buy new. I think it is very worthwhile to buy new if you are going to keep the bike for a long time. Otherwise used is a great way to test out some different bikes and not lose as much on them.

6 years ago I bought a used 2018 Husky TE300 with 87 miles on it from a girl that discovered it had too much power for her. Bike was just like new. I saved a bundle on it as well. I still have it as well as 6 other bikes. Been a great bike so far. I don't buy new every year. I keep them forever.

i like to buy new used bikes at the dealer. (admittedly this would be difficult for everyone to do) BUT i got a 2024 KTM 150XCW from a dealer last January used with 9 hours on it. $3000 off compared to the "new" bikes sitting on either side of it. hard to beat that. Dealer gave me a limited warranty on it for 30 days for free. so i put a bunch of hours on it right away to make sure it was as good as new. and it was/is so far.

I paid too much for a used 85sx for my son. It basically had been a back yard basher and I didn’t know what red flags to look for. By the time we got the bike done there was not one part of the bike that didn’t get replaced basically, and the kid had outgrown it. But…it was my first time rebuilding a bike and it all works great! In the market for a NEW 125 for him.

My pitch would be if your just starting to get into the sport, buy a cheap used one, who cares the make, ride it, see how you like it and if you know your in love with the sport then by all means go new! Kyle raised alot of good points going new when your ready! Ride on!🤘

Bought a decent used bike to get into it and see if I liked it. I did, a lot and bought new this year in July when they went on sale. Saved a couple thousand and have a brand new bike to build exactly how I want it

You definitley hit the used bike buying and selling market on the head. I have been on both ends of that as well. First thing to get done is learn to be patient when buying or selling. Great video Kyle.

Kyle, you missed some major points. First you should never finance a bike. It’s mind blowing how many people are actually financing bikes. Secondly you should look at an end of year bike which you can normally get for the same price people are asking for the same year used. For example currently you can get a new 2024 KTM 350 SXF for $7500. Absolutely crazy watching people buy new model year bikes as soon as they come out.

This is spot on. I bought a 22 Gas Gas ex350 at the end of 2022 as the 23s were already hitting the floor. $9,700 out the door. People were so hyped up on the new KTM platform..... You know the platform that was a big step backwards from the previous one... 😎

Just got back into the hobby after 19 years. Last time I had a dirt bike I was 13. I wanted a dual sport, so I went to the two local dealerships to check out the offerings from Honda, kawasaki, suzuki. There was a used 23 ktm exc-f 500 there, once I sat on it and checked it out I was sold. But not on that bike. I shopped for 3 months, tried buying used and the guys on marketplace didn't want to sell. Ended up looking for out of state stuff ( I'm in central FL) I found a BRAND NEW 24 ktm exc-f 500 sixdays, cheaper than anything in Florida New or used. I ended up driving to KTM World in Cedartown Georgia, about an 8 hr trip for me and got my bike for 11,997 otd (no tax because out of state) NO DEALER FEES, NO SHIPPING FEES, NO ASSEMBLY FEES! Very straight forward no bs, I have no regrets on going with a new bike.

I have like 5 bikes and 2 quads and only bought one cash. Great credit goes a long ways. Save that money for House, pole barn, truck, or emergency!! Only an idiot in this economy would spend that kinda money at once unless rich. I make 80k a yr far from wealthy.

Always buy new unless you personally know the owner of the used one. To many issues on used ones. Very few people sell great used non abused bikes.

New, last year models some times go for crazy low sale prices, looking at you KTM. I am seeing new prices for 2k less than the same bike used.

since ktm provide such little warranty i don't see tye point in buying new bikes better to find a good used deal that has low hours that you can almost sell for the same price later

Haha, I am a Tire kicker. No point in not owning it. Hope to get to the point where I can purchase a new KTM but I will be the 3,500 bottom hunter. However I buy blown up one's and rebuild them completely for myself. My current bike is a 2016 KTM 250 SX that I bought in 2017 with engine issues. Rebuilt, painted frame etc. Now it's a cool bike. Guess no different than a Monthly payment but when I could afford it vs. Monthly

I think one thing that people should be cautious about is not buying the first year of a platform change. The Austrian bikes are notorious for bringing out new bikes and having countless teething problems. Let other people be the guinea pig and get a fully developed platform.

I can't agree more. They also are notorious for making second year changes. I bought a first year 23 in 22. I replaced the air forks with a spring conversion. The next year they released their bikes with a spring cartridge fork. Lesson learned. If buying new, I'd prolly buy the last version of a bike run. Usually has all the bugs worked out. Think last year of TPI.

@@WJamesBeoch That's exactly what I did with the gas gas. The 22 and 23 gas gas was was the tried and true platform with the updated oil pump gear and updated air fork. People that sprung for a 23 KTM or husky got a flawed platform.. that had to be updated for 25.

@Dashriprock4 The suspension tuning has been the most difficult with this bike. The frame is just way to stiff. Higher end suspension upgrades do work awesome with it though. The stock WP forks and Shocks have always left a lot to be desired. Especially if you are out of the optimum rider weight range for the suspension. With gear I'm 240lbs. So no matter what I get the privilege of spending money on my suspension. The 2023 KTM 300 XC has been the most expensive though.

@@WJamesBeoch I'm actually pretty pleased with the updated air fork on the 22. Keep in mind I'm a senior vet C Rider just trail riding. I'm in the Southeast so I never see rocks. Mainly sand, clay and loam. Lots of roots however. It's a little harsh over the chop and I haven't been able to tune that out but it's better if you move quicker. I might have a suspension shop tinker with it when I take it down for the service interval. All in all I'm very happy with the bike. Minor gearing changes for the Eastern woods and protective bits have made it the perfect trail bike for me

2 stroke = buy used & rebuild, 4 stroke = buy new had my '06 crf450r that i bought used give out on the face of a 150 footer.... not a fun feeling and totally avoidable if you're not sending it buy used and enjoy it!

Buying news bikes is a good way to lose tonnes of money . I get new ones but it’s probably not the smartest move . Finding one with 10-20 hours on it is the way to go

It’s literally cheaper to buy new anymore. Everyone wants 6500-12000 since the pandemic for a used bike. There so many late models for 6500-7500 idk why you would buy used. I buy a new Ktm, gas gas,husky almost every year and I’ve never paid more than 8 out the door since 2016 when I started buying new. Dealer will give you late models for almost cost. My local dealer only wants to make $860 on each bike. Don’t trust low hour bikes with a bunch of good parts either. My buddies thought he got a deal on a bike with almost no hours and a bunch of truck parts. Basically everything on bike was cross threaded and stripped out. Most people have no business wrenching and do more damage than good.

Buy new. 9 times out of 10 you are buying someone else’s problems. You might end up spending more money than a new dirt bike would cost.
