If you are looking for the best beginner balisong or butterfly knife, we have options that will help you learn to flip the right way. You can see see them all here: kcoti.com/34rU2gV
The giveaway contest has ended. Thank you to all who entered!
Balisongs, more commonly referred to as butterfly knives have been widely popular for some time now, and it is easy to see the appeal. They have their roots in the Filipino martial arts, but nowadays most people use them to perform tricks. You can see folks showing off their skills in movies and all over the internet. You’ve probably even seen our Photographer, Graham, a time or two in our videos.
Thing is, it can be an intimidating hobby to get into. Not only can the tricks be difficult to master, but you also have to decide which butterfly knife to buy to get started. Experienced flippers have a lot of strong opinions on what is good or not, and sometimes it can be hard to sort through.
The first pick is the budget option. For those of you who what to see if the Bali world is right for you but you don’t want to make a big investment right away, we carry a range of options from Bear and Son.
These aren’t going to flip like a high-end knife, but there is simply no better way to get started without emptying your wallet. They come in a lot of different handle and blade combinations, here we have our KnifeCenter Exclusive Copper vein handled version with a tanto blade.
The biggest drawback of these knives is that they don’t quite have the adjustability that some of the more pricey butterfly knives on the market. The pivots are pinned and the tolerances out of the box can be a little tight. They do take a little breaking in before they smooth out, but once they do, these are great for learning the fundamentals and to see if it is something you want to keep pursuing.
Speaking of trainers there is no shortage of those on the market either that mimic their live bladed counterparts. But there are also options if you want a trainer with a little bit of added utility. Boker Magnum especially has produced some cool offerings that actually flip decently, including this bali comb, bali forks and spoons, and it wouldn’t be a proper list if we didn’t have something with a bottle opener...
The pivots on these tools are even adjustable. Not only are they a great way to learn the tricks, but they are also a nice conversation starter at parties.
Another great trainer that has become a fast favorite here at the Knife Center is the ArtisanCutlery Kinetic-Tool. In addition to multi-tool elements, including a bottle opener, this balisong has an added feature that we’ve never seen before, and that is a spring-loaded, automatic “blade”. Even more than the previous bali-tools, this one will really be a hit at your next gathering.
The auto function doesn’t interfere with the flipping action, which is actually pretty good. It’s single action allows it to spring open or closed depending on your handle position, and you’ve got the hex wrenches, screwdriver/pry bar, ruler, and cap lifter to make it useful beyond the trainer aspect.
So what if you are looking for something a little bit nicer? Something that is relatively affordable, but that you aren’t going to grow out of as you improve on your skills? For that, we have the Bradley Kimura.
You’re getting solid features that typically cost more, such as adjustable pivots riding on bronze washers. You also get a set of colored G10 scales that are removable so if you prefer to have more traction in the hand or slimmer profile you can modify it to fit your preferences. The blade is a graceful spear point made from 154CM steel which means it actually has performance potential with capable edge retention.
We have found these Kimuras to be excellent butterfly knives for the price and it’s perfect for beginners or the novice looking to take the next step, or even more advanced flippers looking for a good extra practice option. It has all the key features that a good balisong needs and it won’t make you cry when you open your wallet.
Sometimes though, you don’t want to make excuses and want to step right up to a higher end knife, one that experienced flippers respect and that won’t let you down. We think the Benchmade 51 Morpho is perfect as it has top-notch construction, precise fit and finish, and smooth action.
Benchmade’s legacy is directly tied to butterfly knives, they were the first knives the company ever produced, and they make some of the best production balis we’ve seen. The 51 is on this list because it sits in a really nice sweet spot as the most affordable Benchmade balisong, and is built so well that it really could be the only balisong you’ll ever need.

There is no way for me not to love the Benchmade however I am looking for a balisong for my granddaughter, she is 15, interested in knives and last weekend expressed a desire to practice flipping. I had just seen the Cold Steel offering and told her I would look for a trainer for her. I looked on your site and was about to purchase a Bear and Son yesterday but checking google led me to a competitor who has a Bear and Son trainer and live blade, two balisongs for 44.00., I do not want to spend my money with them but it caused me to stop looking.

If anyone is looking for a bali trainer, I just got a Boker Plus (Red G-10), and was shocked (in a good way) at the price/quality ratio ($56.21). I doubt it can be beat unless you spend a lot more money. I found out what all the 5 star reviews were about. I also bought a Kershaw Lucha and was very pleasantly surprised again. Experienced flippers talk about the size and weight negatively, but still being a beginner flipper it feels great to me, even after flipping the trainer. With it's ball bearings it's very smooth, and it shows Kershaw's attention to detail and (always) quality craftsmanship. I own many Kershaw knives, and all are of excellent quality and all arrived razor sharp. I also own much more expensive knives, but dollar-for-dollar, I think Kershaw knives are as good as any! Of course when you pay less you're going to get less expensive materials, as the cost difference has to show up someplace. Honestly, I'm gonna buy at least one more Lucha, as I love the knife, and I believe it'll always hold value, and at some point, especially after it's no longer produced, may actually be sought after. Should Kershaw decide to dive deep into the balisong market, I have no doubt they could compete with the best of them.
@cruelchris3099
@cruelchris3099 4 жыл бұрын
My advice to your first knife should be anything. Any knife by a reputable brand should be good. Even if Benchmade is hella overpriced. If you are serious about your technique, Live blade as much as you can. You don't have to spend $600 You don't have to remove the latch. Go with your gut feeling. Had I done that, I'd have 2 knives that are near impossible to find, or impossible to find at a decent price. That's because I went with someone else's recommendation of the Benchmade 51. It was still nice at the price I payed for it. at the $300 it is now is damn near criminal.

It would have to be the Bemchmade 51 Morpho because every respectable collection needs a Bali & if you're going to do something then you need to do it right! Plus having a good quality piece is much more likely to get you hooked on any new types of knives than a bottom of the barrel piece that doesn't work as well or be as graceful as the higher quality blades.

Do any of these Balisong knife makers, still make any of the more vintage wood or pearl handle butterfly knives? Or are they becoming more obsolete, due to aerodynamics, price or whatever? It seems like most modern Balisong have the more tactical look, which is still badass; though I’d love to find an affordable vintage looking Balisong.

I want to personally thank you for this video. I’ve never seen any of your videos before, but have recently gotten into this for my anxiety. Let me explain… haha. Let me start off by saying that I know NOTHING about butterfly knifes. I know this is an odd way of looking at it (probably)- but this is my version of a ‘fidget spinner.’ I have a lot of stress & anxiety, & I feel I always need to be fiddling with something to distract myself. I use to smoke when I was like 17-18, & you know what actually made me stop? Dum Dum Pops- suckers. I always felt the need to have something in my hands, & implied, mouth. So those suckers are what actually made me stop smoking. I’ve seen PewDiePie always flipping around a butterfly recently. I use to watch him in 2012, until a few years ago, when I became very withdrawn & didn’t ever go online for anything, (at this point.) So, coming back, I see my favorite (nostalgic) KZbinr always flipping one- & you know what first came to my mind? Of course, a fidget spinner- or other fidget ‘toys’, but how they were never enough to satisfy my anxiety. They were simply too light, & motion was just too little for me. I’m pretty sure it could be because I have nerve damage, & don’t feel pain, pressure, & temperature the way most people do. I could be wrong, but that’s my own thought. To keep an already long story even shorter- I have a question that I would very much appreciate your opinion on. I have a BaliShark (trainer, also my very first, & first time practicing) butterfly, & it has curved handles. I hear most tricks are harder with curved handles. But the real issue is actually how heavy it is. It’s 0.43 pounds- almost half a pound. Is this normal, or on the heavier side? I find my wrist getting tired easily, & it’s simply too heavy for my fingers to hold onto most of the time. I want one that’s for beginners, but am afraid they will be too light. The one I have is too heavy, but I would rather it be on the heavier side than too light. I really love the idea of the one that has an automatic blade. (I was about to ask if that would get in the way of how you use one without this feature- but you already answered that question. Ha. -Apologies, wasn’t done with the video when I was first typing…) Well, before I go any further- what would you recommend? I also believe that the handles on the one I own are too slim, especially with the curve. It also has to be a trainer, of course. No one would trust me not to accidentally hurt myself with a real one… ha. I don’t have a lot of money right now, but would like your opinion either way. I’m between the one with an automatic blade- the Artisancutlery Kinetic Tool, the Kimura, & the Benchmade 51 Morpho. What I’m looking for is: •Not too heavy, not too light (0.43 is too heavy) •Straight handles, & aren’t too slim •Smoothness while doing tricks •MUST be a trainer, with a FAKE blade (don’t really like the comb or fork modles- want it to look like a blade) Again, thank you! I’ll start looking more into it now. Again, I don’t have much money, but I know for a fact that I’ll be a long-term user based on how much it’s helped my anxiety already. I’m gonna look at your channel, & site now!

Hey if you are still looking for something, you could check out squid industries with like their mako, it’s about .30 lbs, it has larger handles and it’s very smooth to flip.

Okay beginner balisong flippers here are some things you should say 1. Be extremely careful with the bear and sons and. I don’t mean just by cutting yourself. Do not flip bear and sons anywhere with solid flooring. Stick to on top of a couch or bed. 2. Make 100% absolutely sure you know how to loctite balisong screws before buying any balisong with screws. In which screws are better and I will explain if requested. Bradley kimura is really good and I’d highly reccomend it. Even more than the 51. The 51 is nice for edc but with the heavier weight on the kimura it is better for tricks for the most part. If you want to edc a balisong a benchmade 51 would be good. For flipping you might want some titanium scales which you can buy separate and put them on. Make sure you know how to do that as well. The bokers are not bad and I would reccomend them more than bear and sons for better durability

David, as a beginner with blades, I have watched your videos on every knife I buy. My favorite is the " ARTISANCUTLERY TRAINING BALAISONG BLADE ". Looks good and would make a nice trainer. I realize that the contest is over, however, I just wanted to say something. David, you can still send me the knife as a prize. LOL! Thanks for all the great videos David. Jimmy.
