I was born in, raised, and escaped from a cult. It ruined religion for me. However, I'm agnostic; I've had enough firsthand spiritual experiences to know there's more to reality that what we perceive. It's ironic, given that I study science. But organized religion is just another business and a way to maintain social control. All those books had some good messages, but they're still byproducts of the cultures that wrote them. The idea that a mere human could fully, accurately enact the will of an omnipotent being is highly presumptuous. Beware of anyone who says they know the one truth path to God. That aside, you really need to work on your narration; reading from a script is fine, but don't make it sound like it. This video sounded like Public Speaking 101.

Interesting interview and analysis. I'm having trouble with the numbers though. At 13:42 you state there were 83 members inside after the initial gunfight. At 15:22 you say 44 Davidians (mainly children) left which would have resulted in 39 remaining. At 18:21 you report 76 Davidians were deceased and 9 survived which equals 85. I presume the series of events as reported in your documentary create the mismatch?

In season one of this show the ladies expressed that they go into these stories to see if they would fall into the trappings of a cult or not. Marle being someone who admited in some of the pasted cases they covered that she would while Joyce is more discerning. In short the point was for them to add their personal thoughts. Hence the bar at the bottom of the screen either moving towards yes or no at different levels of the cults progression. They did that with paddles too last season.

Ask wisdom… aka Shaun bunds, that was the baby that was beaten until his bottom bled. Or heather jones - who talks about the abuse in the most recent documentary on Netflix. To me a cult is about the leader more than the believers, and as I just checked the definition that is indeed the case, so I don't think how it would dehumanize them. It seems somehow similar to prostitute becoming something else (can't tell since that's the one term I'd use), it is abusive and exploitative, in the case of a cult by the leader and in the case of prostitution by the clients, as it assumes the person isn't doing it of her (or his) own volition.
@davidlane1806 ай бұрын
That assumption is wrong, certainly in the case of many prostitutes who absolutely decide to live that particular lifestyle. I would agree that some people have external pressures that influence them to a point that makes them captive, however most adults also posses free will and in the case of the Davidians they could have walked away at any point. The fact they were too week and allowed themselves to be indoctrinated has to rest on their shoulders.
