I've been in French class for like 3 years and I don't really know how to say anything. Like I know what things mean when I read them, but if someone says something to me I can't understand them. It's probably because my teacher focuses on teaching us how to write, spell, and read French instead of actually teaching what the words sound like and stuff..

That last scene is so important because it makes you realise that you probably know more than you think. I am learning German and once two tourists came to me and asked me (in English) where a certain street was. I answered them in English and said the street was not far away from where we were and the women replied in German to the man "Wir sind nicht weg" and I understood what she said! :D This must sound a bit stupid but for me, at the time, meant a lot because I understood what a native German speaker said! And I didn't know they were German (I actually thought they were British) so I wasn't on "German mode", I wasn't expecting to hear German, which means I just understood her naturally! These little moments make you go on like nothing else! :)

@LaranjaChannel
@LaranjaChannel 8 жыл бұрын
+Roman74750 Danke schön! :) I hope you don't mind me answering in English. I am still not confident enough to write in German :P I think the most important reason is that I love foreign languages, including German! As I have come to learn more and more German I like it more and more! It is such a logic language, I love it! I am actually learning adjective declension now and I am not loving it because it is hard! xD Second is that I intend to work in Germany or Austria for a time so I am stepping ahead of time and learn as much as I can! :D
@Ling74750
@Ling74750 8 жыл бұрын
***** I don't mind :D That's really interesting to hear as unfortunately many native English speakers think that German is an ugly language. Good luck with German grammer...it's logical but still pretty hard in my opinion. I'd recommend going to Germany and not Austria because the Austrian dialect makes it even harder for foreigners to learn German but that is up to you. I'd also recommend the KZbin channel "Easy German" it's a great and entertaining way to learn a foreign language.
@LaranjaChannel
@LaranjaChannel 8 жыл бұрын
+Roman74750 Thanks for understanding! :) I am actually not a native English speaker, I am Portuguese! :D We do have a lot of German tourists here every year (specially in the summer) so it's almost common to hear German once or twice, here and there! :D Many friends and colleges of mine say that German is an ugly and violent language. When I said to them that I wanted to start learning a foreign language many said to me not to learn German because it's an ugly language. And those comments had an influence on me because, even though I didn't agree, I started learning German way later than I wanted because of those comments. I am on my 3rd year of German now and I belive if it weren't for those comments I would be on my 5th or 6th year. All my teachers (so far) are from Germany so maybe I will take your opinion and go to Germany :)

That also happened to me and what I got out of these 8 years is actually embarrassing. - I speak like a 3 year old. - I know how to say: “ I want to go to the toilet” - I can count from one to ten really fast, but cannot understand native speakers because they are too fast. lol - And I know that creepy kindergarten song about Alouette. *Sigh* I really want to re-study it but I’m too absorbed in Korean.

I'm currently trying for... not fluency, but the ability to spot basic grammatical mistakes, ability to read an actual book and hold a straightforward conversation, I guess?... before I move onto starting another language. It kinda sucks because it feels like it is taking forever. I am considering changing things up a little and studying the languages with completely different roots at the same time so I feel like I am progressing at a better pace. I definitely couldn't hack Korean and Japanese at the same time, that's pretty awesome!

People normally forget their foreign language after high school, but once you go to a foreign country where that language is spoken in, it comes back to you slowly. I took Chinese and Japanese in high school and I started remembering a lot of stuff when I went to Taiwan/ China, and Japan.

French is such a fun language to learn, what I do to study is translate my favorite songs into French, it helps me learn a lot of words and verb conjugations since I sing the songs all the time. Music is a great way to memorize.

Isn't it too hard to learn? I mean, English or Japanese are very easy to learn for me masculine and feminine don't exist but but it must be super hard to remember if every single word is masculine or not (at least I had to learn it for German and I find it so difficult ^^)
@CoccinelleMiraculeux
@CoccinelleMiraculeux 7 жыл бұрын
Annica Harris nope! You should just be able to look at the word and determine whether it is feminine or not. For example, seeing a word ending in the suffix -ette typically means it is feminine, whereas words ending in n are typically masculine. It's more about recognising and understanding the rules of the language gender rather than memorising it. You'll also find you'll know quite a bit of French already, since 29% of the English language is French, or constructed off the same rules. Have a go, and see if you like learning it! Bonne chance !

I'm taking French, and we had a thing for extra credit where we meet and speak French to other French students. One of the teachers asked me and my friend what we were studying right now in French, and my friend thought she asked if we studied French during marching band, so he said no. I thought she asked if we were in French class, but I was confused that my friend said no, so I said "oui" in a really drawn out way that showed I was definitely confused. And it wasn't even a yes or no question.

I feel depressed i studied French at a French school had such a passion but no support. My family constantly made fun of me for it, never cared to help me practice. Insulted the language,eventually i gave up..no one to practice with. It hurts when I hear the language, because i still love it so much.

I am fluent in ASL and I know it doesn't seem like it, but it is really very useful. I work at Chickfila and just yesterday I had a deaf family walk in and my coworker was very confused when they were typing on their phone what they wanted. I stepped in and started to sign, it made the process much easier. This isn't the only experience I've had either. Plus you can talk across the room and with your mouth full! Not to mention it is a beautiful and expressive language! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

I thought I was the only one, everyone's talking about Korean and German. They're all talking amongst one another but it's really difficult when you want to communicate with someone else who signs but the only way is either in person or if there's like skype/FaceTime or anything that involves a web cam :(

Then I decided to get back into school and I took a French course and watching this a year later makes me happy because although I am still at a very novice level of French, I can say I understood A LOT of it!
