Richard Marx - Angelia (Landau Guitar Cover)

Apparently Richard Marx was inspired by the production of Hysteria when he came to writing and producing this track. Pretty cool song that I think is certainly elevated by those luscious Michael Landau tones and playing. I tried my best to emulate his sound using my Free The Tone Tri-Chorus and created a micro pitch and stereo delay setting in Logic. I'm still looking to perfect that type of tone. Also, I think Richard Marx has a great voice. :)

I use a Charvel DK24 (it's purple) into a Boss Me50 (where I get my tone) into a Free The Tone Tri-Avatar (for my Tri Chorus) into a Palmer Pdi-09 (which simulated a mic'd up cab) into a Focusrite Scarlett into my computer running Logic Pro X (where I add a little EQ and Reverb and for the WDW setup some micro pitch and stereo delays).

Marx was my guy growing up. My father kind of scoffed at his music because it was too "middle of the road" for him, but I loved his great sound, even as a kid. It's very haunting and thoughtful music.

Yes! One of my absolute favourite Richard Marx songs, purely because of Landau's great guitar tone! Word on the street is that Marx and producer/engineer David Cole tried to replicate the Pyromania/Hysteria sound on this track, and I personally think they did that sound justice. It's only right that this particular Richard Marx song is covered by you, sir! Instant like! 👍

Amazing tone and playing. I absolutely adore this song and album. While my favorite track off the album is too late too say goodbye this song is truly Richard Marx masterpiece as far as the huge hits go. To me this is a perfect song and I wouldn’t change a note from it. Didn’t know this song was inspired by Def Leppard till about a year ago and the more I listen to it it totally made a lot of sense cause it definitely has that vibe to it as well. This song is another perfect example for the la studio clean tones that I love. More of a reason why I admire Landau’s guitar work so much. This guy can play just about anything in the book like lukather, huff etc and he has so many memorable riffs and solos as well. Like this one for example. Which is why he’ll forever remain one of my favorite guitarists of all time.

Marx based his tone on Hysteria as an inspiration and later Def Leppard studied his album to learn his tone. A great anecdote of how those guys study each other. Amazing as usual!!

I own the album, "Repeat Offender" of which this marvelous track holds home at the 3 spot on the track listing. Out of all others on the LP, this track gets the most plays. I recall buying this album at a long forgotten music/media store here in the States (FYE). I'd often listen to it on my way to school during my senior year, cruising down in my black T/A all by my lonesome. The coldy, northeastern wind hit the back of my neck as I'd get out of the car, but the tune remained lodged in my head as I trekked from the parking lot, across the football fields into the main campus for Study Hall prior to 1st period. That seemed all of lifetime ago, yet it was just back in 2003. God, what a time; an easier time! Great work and you certainly nailed the tone here. It does sound an awful lot like Hysteria in terms of "tone/essence". I too think Marx's vocal tone, and vibrato is totally 80's, killer for ballads, and of course more upbeat tunes like "Angelia" Finally, a little backstory on the track; Richard was on a plane during a tour, and he met a particularly friendly flight attendant aboard one of his cross country flights at the time. Her name, you guessed it Angelia. TMYK!

Again great work, man! Thinking of Landau's tones and style, a great example is two songs from his work with Jamie Walters on Jamie's self-titled album from 1995. They are Comfort of Strangers, and The Distance. I remember the cd sleeve having a comment from Michael about the "haunting' quality of Jamie's singing. It may be worth a listen to :) Another song I thought of is Heartbreak Kid by Icehouse off of, I believe, Man of Colours.

Thanks for doing this one. I have been a RM fan since 1988 and regard Angelia as my favourite RM song. This song has a killer bridge and I always think the outro is just fantastic, as it having a superb sax solo and then a guitar solo. Now we are in an era of no solos!
