After Tesla made its debut in Malaysia, BYD launched the Dolphin, a new RM100K EV which is set to disrupt the RM100-130K segment in the auto industry. Being a compact hatchback, this affordable EV ticks pretty much all the right boxes including the advanced safety tech as well as interior space. Is the BYD Dolphin the best entry-level EV in Malaysia? And should you get this over other RM100K vehicles like the Honda WR-V, City Hatchback or the Proton X50? Amin and Alex discuss on this episode of Let's Talk About.

If only our country don't have to "protect" Proton and Perodua (whom are just car rebadgers with no real innovation / R&D), Dolphin pricing would be closer to Thailand's 699,999 / 859,999 baht (RM92,750 / 113,889). This pricing could disrupt local car market even more.

I can confirm your impression what I have seen in Thailand. I am looking for an EV about since end of 2022. First I wanted to replace our Mazda CX-5 as a daily driver, but EVs at that size are not available in Thailand or too expensive. So I start to look for smaller models. I don't like the Ora Good Cat and the Neta V. So I first looked at the MG 4, because I like its design and technology (RWD). Unfortunately the MG4 is too low for me and is missing some practical features. The BYD Atto 3 did't impress me from the photos (generic Chinese design) but I like BYD's battery technology. The Atto 3 looks better in person and is really very roomy inside. It could replace the CX-5. I was also very impressed after the test ride. But I then skipped it because of the white interior parts which are not family friendly. There are other things I don't like and the price is too high for accepting these. The Dolphin didn't impress me when he was shown in Spring. BYD only showed the standard model. But then BYD announced the Extended version and it looks so much better. I made then a test drive and find-out, that the ride and seating hight is good for me and interior space sufficient. The interior also looks far more better than in the Atto 3. The test drive with the standard model was also very interesting. The Dolphin feels more powerful than the figures would suggest. That would been enough for a city car. In Thailand the prices are as attractive as in Malaysia and at that price level I am willing to accept some smaller issues. Summary: I ordered a Dolphin Extended Range and hope, that I will get it soon (until end of August).

but atto 3 isnt using blade battery right? if i am not mistaken it uses standard lfp battery
11 ай бұрын
@@H_B_R All BYD cars used the LFP Blade battery. LFP is the chemistry, Blade is the construction. They are long blade instead of small cylindric cells. Atto 3 Extended and Dolphin Extended use the same motor and battery. But the Dolphin is lighter and therefor faster and more efficient.

I think Alex sums it up best, unbeatable value against ALL types of cars within the price range. Hope charging facilities will improve quickly because I predict every charging stations will be Dolphinfied... lol!

Interesting discussion, thanks. Look forward to your discussion of the Seagull, which is supposed to be even cheaper. What’s the issue with the 100K limit? I am afraid I haven’t been paying attention to Malaysian government policy on EVs , but am ow planning to get an EV around 2025. Also, I heard ZeekrX is supposed to be an “affordable premium EV” (European design), so hope to see it in Malaysia by 2025, and your take on the ZeekrX. I have just subscribed to your channel, because this video discussion was very interesting. Thanks

I think the car jingle is for those pedestrians that are unable to hear the car coming as EV cars are really stealthy/silent. It's a good feature but BYD should have given more options that doesn't sound as embarrassing. Another great and informative video from @soyacincautv team. Kudos!

Charging: BYD recommends (Atto 3 user's manual) to charge at least one times per week up to 100% and make a deep recharge every 3-6 months. For me, that charging power (AC and DC) is enough because I don't plan to make long trips.

Byd Dolphin looks okay, specially when you go for the higher model with 2 tone paint, you can make it look good. Here in Denmark, it would go up against the MG4, amazing car for the price as well, fun car to drive, but the onboard system can feel lagging in response and the drive assist being a on and off feel. Tried the Atto 3, and the onboard system felt much better, and more confident then MG4's. But personally I'm mostly hyped for the seal, just waiting for some official pricing here in Denmark. Great podcast, a lot of fun to hear your guys point of view.

Chery Australia has recalled 5901 examples of its Omoda 5, after discovering a defect which can result in brake failure for the small SUV. The recall affects all Chery Omoda 5s sold in Australia since local deliveries began in mid-2023. “Due to a manufacturing defect, the bolt securing the brake pipe union may not have been tightened sufficiently. This could cause the brake fluid to leak and result in reduced braking performance,” Chery said in its recall notice. “A reduction in braking performance could increase the risk of an accident resulting in serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants, pedestrians and other road users.”

I would say it is good for a small family with medium income that don't need to worry too much when it comes to travel / day-2-day life city usage but definitely not for enthusiast and youngster.. That being said, if you're living in suburban area / away from those charging station, petrol car is still the best option seeing that our country have our own natural resources -petroleum and good government subsidy in petrol...
@soyacincautv
@soyacincautv 11 ай бұрын
Yes, the concern about charging infrastructure is still a valid one. The upside is, charge point operators are rolling out faster than we expect, though they need to consider suburban and rural areas. If you can install a charger at home, this helps a lot too.

Good point! It looks like a good alternative to the more popular SUVs in this price range. The only thing that we're concerned about is the dealer network and after sales support may not be as good as its competitors.

To me the biggest turnoff is the aesthetic of the car, espcially the front. It looks too flat and boring. But of course appearance is very subjective. The interior of the car is amazing though. I test drove the standard variant as well but the car felt sluggish, which is disappointing but understandable for its price. I'm sure the premium/extended variant should be way more powerful
