Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD opened its first factory in Southeast Asia on July 4, 2024, in Thailand. Government subsidies and tax breaks are attracting a wave of investment from Chinese EV makers in the country. BYD’s next target is Europe.

It's one of multiple BYD factories around the world starting production. They are expanding in Brazil, a new factory in Hungary and so on. Producing locally removes the tariffs and it all adds up to their worldwide production capacity.

But EVs made by Chinese companies in Thailand, for example, would not face the tariffs. At the same time, EVs made by European companies in China would also face the same tariffs.
