Finally, BYD took the advice from the public to remove the weird and controversal design of the interior. The so called dragon scale looking design at the C pillar together with the ' Build your Dream' gaudy wordings at the trunk have been removed as well. This time BYD will certain hit a homerun. I will order one if it is available on the market.

Finally a BYD that looks like a proper car, no motto on the back and no psychedelic interior. If this goes on sale in the UK for under £40,000, then the VW ID4 and the Skoda Enyaq had better watch out.

Great review Derek. Any inside info on when it will be released in ireland and cost? We were in the BYD dealership in Dublin today and they said quarter 3 of 2024 which feels an age away! Even so, I think we’ll hold out for the Seal U, the Atto 3 pales in comparison

Great review thanks. But I would've thought the first thing you'd comment on once inside is the interior, since the Atto 3 was so way-out with it's interior 'whale blubber' design! This however is vastly different - way more conventional....perhaps too conventional. Very different even than the Atto 4 sedan (which here in Australia is called the Seal).

The Atto 3 with the same battery chemistry ofter stops when the battery is 8-10%. Huge problem. Have they mentioned how they wull solve that for the BYD batteries?

Yup I am in Australia with a young family. We tried the Atto 3 and enjoyed it a lot but that interior was just beyond us, and the boot space not as big as we need. We hope this Seal U will be the EV that meets our needs. Looks fantastic in and out and seems to have the tech and space we're looking for.

BYD Song Champion Edition is correct in the Chinese market but is that only sold in PHEV version there?

​@@NevoEVReviewIreland They have both, the PHEV Song Plus DM-i and the Song Plus EV (aka the Seal U), which means it's not based on a dedicated EV platform like the Seal sedan. The DM-i is a bestseller, but EV version isn't selling particularly well in China as it's priced quite a bit higher than the PHEV - irrelevant for Europe though as it'll always be EV only here, unlike Middle East, central Asia and South America markets that seem to be getting the DM-i version as well. Anyway, being a BYD it should be plenty efficient battery wise. I gather with the Champion Edition they updated the exterior to match the "ocean" design language with newer BYD EVs, so that it could pass as a Seal.

@@NevoEVReviewIreland The Song (and its other hybrid bestseller siblings, the Qin and the Tang) won’t be going away, as PHEV demand is big in China and much of the third world. Their EV versions, the Seal U included, will probably stay as well but I wonder how they’re gonna fare in Europe in the long run because like you have mentioned, there will be the Sea Lion. Slightly larger but with a much longer wheelbase, I gather it’s more like a direct competitor to the Model Y than the Seal U. Probably more expensive as well. BYD’s portfolio is hard to fathom indeed.

BYD just announced they have lowered the price of the BYD Atto III here in Austria by 5400,- Euros. Thats the amount private persons get as EV intensives. For a company like me its still 47.400,- and the Model Y still costs 47.900,- Oh well, those who do not want to learn must feel. Very free translation from „Wer nicht hören will muss fühlen“.

Its a car with 4 doors. Check. What is the driving feeling like? Long stretches on the Autobahn? Small roads? Tight curves? Visibility? Fogging? Seat holding left/right/front/under the knees? Assistants if it has any? Chinese illness? See Tesla Björn if you want to know more. How is the Software? The App? Does it work with bad Internet in Debrecen as in the roads on any large city with Edge? WIth WiFi only? Bluetooth connectivity and speed connecting iPhone or Samsung Smartphones (known for bad Bluetooth)? For those who want it Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? How is the Charging experience @ -20 degrees? Charging and driving @ 40 degrees? 1000km challenge? Does it hold up @ 100.000km? How much does BYD charge for a repair? A maintenance? A accident left front? A new window?

I don't like the words "BYD" written on the car bonnet. I think it would look better if it was a trademarked BYD logo. Something stylish and elegant. Perhaps an abstract logo of dragon or something. A bit like Ferrari has the prancing horse logo. Similar with ford Mustang. I just think a logo better adds to the artistic aspect of the car.
