Brazil has suspended temporary work visas for Chinese working for electric vehicle giant BYD in the country, amid claims of “slavery-like conditions”. The move followed an investigation by Brazil’s labour department, which said on January 7, 2025, that BYD had brought in hundreds of workers on irregular visas to build a factory. Officials running the probe announced in December that BYD workers were subjected to overcrowded lodging and 70-hour work weeks. Labour authorities said the 163 factory workers were leaving or have already left Brazil, and BYD agreed to comply with local laws for its remaining employees.

Try compare US and Chinese speaker. US speaker speak 1 thing then their higher up do the opposite It why they kept getting debunk and counter by reporter. Chinese speaker only speak when order and confirmation are made, which mean their upper order are respect Brazil law since there are mutual benefit for cooperation.

The premise of this investigation is fundamentally flawed and fails to provide an accurate depiction of the situation. SCMP will likely publish a follow-up on this case to better inform broader audiences. Consider the following questions: First, what is Brazil’s minimum wage for workers in the EV sector? Second, what is the gross average salary of a Chinese migrant worker employed in BYD’s Brazil operations? Third, under Brazil’s labor laws, are employers required to provide accommodation for their workers? If so, what are the specific requirements for housing migrant workers?
@smithnjumbe1325
@smithnjumbe1325 7 сағат бұрын
These questions are critical to understanding the nuances of this case. I argue that the core issue here is not the violation or abuse of workers’ rights but rather a clash of working cultures. The work culture of China’s migrant workers, particularly those in blue-collar jobs, differs significantly from that in other parts of the world. A key characteristic is their preference for communal, dormitory-style accommodations over private, more comfortable living arrangements. Why is this the case? There are two main reasons: 1. Historical Legacy: Communal living is rooted in a long-standing belief that such arrangements enhance productivity by fostering a collective work ethic. 2. Economic Savings: Migrant workers often travel alone, leaving their families behind. By choosing inexpensive communal housing, they can save a significant portion of their earnings.
@smithnjumbe1325
@smithnjumbe1325 7 сағат бұрын
This second point likely explains why BYD workers released a video statement refuting allegations of slavery-like conditions. For anyone familiar with China’s domestic companies, it is common to see employers providing not only housing but also meals and other amenities, resembling a boarding-school-like environment. Workers live and work in these facilities for months at a time, returning home only occasionally, particularly during major holidays like the Chinese New Year. This approach aligns with the economics of cost-effective labor, a hallmark of China’s manufacturing model. It allows them to produce goods quickly, efficiently, and at varying levels of quality, depending on demand.
@smithnjumbe1325
@smithnjumbe1325 7 сағат бұрын
The controversy arises when Chinese companies, such as BYD, export this model abroad, often sparking backlash framed around narratives of poor living conditions akin to slavery. What should BYD do to address and shift this narrative? Beyond complying with international labor standards and the labor laws of host countries, BYD should consider upgrading the living conditions of migrant workers to meet middle-class standards. Implementing this change would require both the company and employees to share the costs associated with sustaining such a policy.

It does not look like a storage. It seems to me that the workers just hang their clothes on the side of the beds. 0:31 Is that guy sleeping on a mattress? 0:35 "...food were stored directly on the floor." Sad thing is many Chinese low-skilled workers accept to living under such conditions because they don't have better choice. 3. The reason that outsourcing companies hired them instead of locals because they work harder, longer, easier to be managed and lower payments. 4.
