I always thought he approached rhythm guitar like the right hand of a keyboard player and did a really good job of keeping sonic separation between his guitar and Mike's bass. They had a huge sound for a trio and I think this had a lot to do with it. And it takes a lot of trust in your bass player to do that. Which speaks well to both Ed and Mike.

It’s so cool seeing someone that knows some music theory actually explain all of these intervals. These are things I’ve been playing since the early 80’s but never knew the names of the intervals and how they work. I just figured them out, out of necessity. People would ask me how I was playing those riffs and I could never explain it because I had no idea. I always wished I could teach, but I’m no teacher. I wish I had a teacher like you back in the day. My path would have been quicker.

Even If you don't understand the theory behind this or even the name of the notes this is actually really easy to understand and simplifies the process of creating your own riffs. But if you only learn at least the names of the open string notes and the intervals, (those two things are actually pretty simple, this coming from someone who for the longest time didn't want to bother with learning this stuff) you will understand it even better. Great short lesson. Thanks for this!

Charlie, this is amazing. Watching this was SO eye opening, I almost cried. There's so much I've learned watching this ONE tutorial, and I'm 60 this year, and Arthur is setting up in my joints...so I don't need to tell you that chord formations on the fretboard are not only frustrating, but painful. Voicing out these phrases while not needing to be a phalangeal contortionist will be bringing me SO much joy for my degree of noodling. And while EVH will basically remain Royalty of this type of playing, I'd urge you to open up Dirty Weapons from Killer Dwarfs, and give Mike Hall a quick listen. These types of 3rd fill rhythms are all over that record, and sound no less awesome. From the bottom of my ❤; thank you..for opening up a very easy to comprehend tutorial for this ol' noodler... (I'm linking this one to my brother, who is also an aspiring noodler😉)

Thanks, I listened to Dirty Weapons based on your recommendation here...that song kicks ass! And yes, a great example of those same types of riffs. Sorry to hear Arthur wants to move in...he's a bad roommate. I just turned 56 and know a little about joints...if there's anything you can do to minimize systemic inflammation, it can really help! 🎸🎸🎸
@freegee3503 Жыл бұрын
Arthur hates curcumin! What is curcumin? It comes from the spice, tumeric. It is a great supplement to take for inflammation and as an alternative antibiotic. I get the NOW brand on amazon. 👍 Hope your jointers are feeling better soon.

Yeah and emphasis on barre chords with lame books that had tabs which didn’t sound like what was actually being played. . Give a kid a crap a## guitar with high action and heavy strings on a fat neck , then make them think they need to hold a fully barred F chord for multiple measures.That’s one way to lose enthusiasm.
