Att bygga en gärsgård är en gammal konst, som här har filmats av Bengt Sandén.

Very interesting. How do the horizontal beams end up being diagonal at the end? Is it because you start with the small pieces first and finish with the big pieces last? Sorry for the English, I can't speak any Scandinavian languages.

The beams are diagonal all the way along the fence, this is the typical design (with the exception of ports etc). The angle can vary depending on the length and the required height of the fence. The reason for having them diagonal is to make the fence continous and uniform. You build the fence with the fatter root end against the ground. This makes the fence more durable over time, but also it makes the fence have smaller "masks" closer to the ground, which makes it stop smaller animals. It is also possible to rebuild the fence by cutting of the rotten part and rebuild the fence with a more acute angle. It is a very clever construction since material of various lengths and qualities can be used, and replaced independently. It is probably also possible to increse the height of the fence by adding more wood on the upper part of the fence. With some effort, you could also make the fence tighter over time by adding more material to it when you can get your hands on it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundpole_fence
