As a French, if you plan to visit the country (and mostly if you go to Paris) be extremely careful about your belongings. There are unfortunately a lot of pickpockets and their favorite "preys" are tourists because they know that they won't pay attention to their things because getting stolen so easily is not a common thing in plenty of countries. Thus, always make sure to have your belongings in sight and near you plus never leaves your phone in the back pockets of your jeans. If you do so you will normally not get stolen and will be able to enjoy properly. I am so sorry about that, this gives such a bad image of my country I am so ashamed. I still hope that you enjoyed/will enjoy and loved/will love my country

My mobile phone was stolen on the Champs-Élysées, whilst I was crossing a busy road. I had the same reaction, overwhelmed not speaking French. Realising I was struggling to deal with it locally, I called the UK and asked my brother to take over, I gave him my passwords and whilst all he could do was get it shut off, that was enough. Paris is still my favourite city to visit. Afternoon tea at the Ritz and a trip to Fortnum and Mason, 2 very British things to do, welcome to the clan!

Yes unfortunately there are a lot of pickpockets in Paris. I am French and what my parents always taught me is to be careful about my personal stuff when I go to Paris and take the public transportation. You have to be super careful and I am so sad to know that many tourists got stolen in Paris. What image of France it gives... I'm so glad that you enjoyed your trip anyway and have been able to appreciate the city!

@@ynghr03 I think pickpockets are everywhere, not just Paris. And since that happened to me I have been back 2 more times, and like your parents advised you, I was more careful about my belongings, and surroundings. In my defense the first time I went, I was enthralled with the Champs Elysees, so wasn't paying proper attention. I adore Paris
