Summary on flakiness and elongated index of aggregate: Flakiness index calculated based on the thickness of an aggregate passes through a thickness gauge. If the thickness of aggregate is less than 0.6 times of mean size of aggregate then it is under flakiness aggregate. Whereas, elongated aggregate is based on lengthwise whose size is morethan 1.8 times of mean size of aggregate. The aggregate which are not pass through thickness gauge is used in elongated aggregate. Thank you for the beautiful session sir..

Summary: Flakiness and Elongation Index It is an experiment conducted on coarse aggregates. Flakiness Index: An aggregate is classified as flaky if its thickness is less than 0.6 times of the mean size The sample of aggregate is taken and Sieve analysis is done (Sieve size ranges from 63 mm to 6.3 mm) Then the aggregate retained on each sieve is passed through the respective thickness gauge slot. If the aggregate passes the respective slot then it indicates that its size is less than 0.6 times the mean size which again indicates that the aggregate is flaky. Like this, each aggregate is passed through the respective thickness gauge slots. Flakiness Index = (Weight of the material passing through the various thickness gauge slots) ÷ (Total weight of the sample) Elongation Index: An aggregate is called elongated if its length is more than 1.8 times its mean dimension. Once the Flakiness test is done, the flaky aggregates are separated and on the remaining non flaky aggregates the Elongation Index experiment is carried on. Sieve analysis is done for the sample(excluding the flaky one) ( size of the sieve ranges from 50 mm to 6.3 mm) Each aggregate is passed through the respective slots of length gauge and the aggregate which wont pass through the slot is categorized as elongated aggregate, it indicates that its size is more than 1.8 times the mean size. Elongation Index = (Weight of the material retained on the various length gauge slots) ÷ (Total weight of the sample) Combined Index = Elongation Index + Flakiness Index Thanks a lot sir

Flakiness test and elongation tests: conducted on coarse aggregates. Flakiness test: 1. Sample of aggregates taken, Sieve analysis is done. 2. Passing of the aggregates (which are retained on sieve) through respective thickness gauge slot. 3. Thickness of the selected aggregates < 0.6 d mean So, Can say, Thickness gauge slot size: 0.6 d mean 4. Flakiness index = ( Weight of passed aggregates through thickness gauge slot / Total weight of sample ) × 100 Elongation test: 1. Non-passed aggregates from flakiness test are further passed through length gauge. 2. Length of the aggregates > 1.8 d mean 3. So, can say, Length gauge slot size: 1.8 d mean 4. Elongation index = ( Weight of non-passed aggregates through length gauge slot / Total weight ) × 100 Combined Index: Flakiness Index + Elongation Index Facts are picturized in very interesting manner. Superb teaching sir👌 Thank you very much
